21st Century Community Outreach And Collection Development: Asu Chicano/A Research Collection, Nancy L. Godoy-Powell, Elizabeth G. Dunham

Journal of Western Archives

Mexicans and Mexican Americans have resided in Arizona since the early 16th century. Their history, however, is severely under-documented in the state’s archival repositories. As of 2012, this community is represented in a mere 1-2% of the state’s known archival holdings, and 98% of such documentation is held at Arizona State University’s Chicano/a Research Collection (CRC). This article provides a historical review of the CRC’s establishment in 1970 and how its founding Curator, Dr. Christine Marín, transformed a small circulating book collection into Arizona’s largest repository for Mexican American history. It goes on to examine how the CRC’s sitting Archivist …

Out Of The Vault: Developing A Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon To Enhance Public Programming For University Archives And Special Collections, Rose Sliger Krause, James Rosenzweig, Paul Victor Jr.

Journal of Western Archives

Academic libraries are more cognizant of their public program offerings than ever before. How does this shift impact the university archives and special collections? How does this area of the academic library meet the challenge of public programming that engages their users with their core missions? At Eastern Washington University (EWU), a regional comprehensive university, library and archives staff collaborated to develop a Wikipedia edit-a-thon that would provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to 1) expose them to archival materials, and 2) provide them with experience in collaborative knowledge creation. This article reviews the literature on the use of the …

Engaging Faculty And Reducing Costs By Leveraging Collections: A Pilot Project To Reduce Course Pack Use, Nelly Cancilla, Bobby Glushko, Stephanie Orfano, Graeme Slaght

Western Libraries Publications

INTRODUCTION Academic libraries have the privilege of serving many roles in the lives of their institutions. One role that is largely untapped is their ability to actively leverage their collections to support faculty teaching and to reduce student out-of-pocket costs by eliminating systemic double payment for course materials. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM/SERVICE This paper details a project by the Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office (SCCO) at the University of Toronto that aimed to reduce this systemic double payment by leveraging collections and electronic reserves to provide a new service, the Zero-to-Low Cost Courses. Building on existing relationships with faculty, SCCO staff …

Understanding Factors That Encourage Research Productivity In Academic Librarians, Kristin Hoffmann, Selinda Berg, Denise Koufogiannakis Jan 2017

Understanding Factors That Encourage Research Productivity In Academic Librarians, Kristin Hoffmann, Selinda Berg, Denise Koufogiannakis

Western Libraries Publications

Objective – This project identifies the factors that contribute to the success of librarians as active researchers. Research success is generally aligned with productivity and output, and the authors are therefore interested in understanding the factors that encourage research productivity. This fills a gap in the literature on librarians as researchers, which has tended to focus on barriers rather than enablers.

Methods – For this quantitative study, we distributed an online survey to 1,653 potential participants across Canada and received 453 usable responses for a 27% response rate. The survey asked participants to report their research outputs and to answer …

Python For Archivists: Breaking Down Barriers Between Systems, Gregory Wiedeman Jan 2017

Python For Archivists: Breaking Down Barriers Between Systems, Gregory Wiedeman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Working with a multitude of digital tools is now a core part of an archivist’s skillset. We work with collection management systems, digital asset management systems, public access systems, ticketing or request systems, local databases, general web applications, and systems built on smaller systems linked through application programming interfaces (APIs). Over the past years, more and more of these applications have evolved to meet a variety of archival processes. We no longer expect a single tool to solve all our needs and embraced the “separation of concerns” design principle that smaller, problem-specific and modular systems are more effective than large …

Hidden Figures Class Museum Project, Amanda Benigni, Anna Smith Jan 2017

Hidden Figures Class Museum Project, Amanda Benigni, Anna Smith

Museum Assignments

In the secondary English/Language Arts classroom, inquiry-based learning is most often adopted as a method for teaching literary analysis. But teachers too often overlook the fact that literary analysis is not the only means of facilitating inquiry-based learning. Research, particularly archival research, can provide students with yet another opportunity for inquiry and reflective thinking.

Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly (both the mass-market paperback and the Young Reader's Edition), is a text that is especially well-suited to teaching archival research skills to young learners, as it is itself the product of a rigorous, thoughtful, and purposeful research project conducted by …

Clark County Circuit Court Records, Archivists

Guides and Finding Aids

Clark County was established in 1818, and therefore became one of the five counties in existence at the time the area became known as Arkansas Territory in 1819. Court was held in various places in those early days, such as the home of pioneer settler Jacob Barkman, west of the Caddo River, near what is now Caddo Valley. Later, a county seat was established at Greenville, which was located to the southwest along the Military Road (also known as the Southwest Trail). In 1842 Arkadelphia (previously known as Blakelytown) became the permanent location of the county seat.

The county has …

Clark County Cemetery Survey Records, Archivists

Guides and Finding Aids

The Clark County Historical Association conducted a survey of all known cemeteries within Clark County, culminating with publication of a five-volume set of records divided according to geographical area: Arkadelphia, Okolona, Gurdon, Manchester, and Amity. While each is indexed individually, a sixth volume provides a comprehensive index to all five. The work was done over the course of several years beginning in the late 1990s. The project supercedes that coordinated by the Extension Homemakers about twenty years earlier.

This collection includes the original data sheets compiled by Clark County Historical Association volunteers as they surveyed the county's cemeteries. Comprehensive descriptive …
