International Travel, Groovy Guys ... And Fathomless Good, Maureen E. Schlangen

Roesch Library Staff Publications

In 2013, the Marian Library received the papers of the late John S. Stokes Jr., co-founder of Mary’s Gardens, a Philadelphia organization that taught and encouraged the planting of devotional gardens in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mother. Active in civil rights and social justice movements, he was the director of the Wellsprings Ecumenical Center in Philadelphia. He died in 2007.

Among his papers was a collection of promotional brochures from a variety of religious orders. The University of Dayton Libraries have digitized them and made many of them available in eCommons, the University’s open-access institutional repository. In observance of …

Strengthening Archival Digitization Efforts With An Interdepartmental Approach: A Case Study, Jessica Hayden, Jane D. Monson, Emory J. Trask Jan 2016

Strengthening Archival Digitization Efforts With An Interdepartmental Approach: A Case Study, Jessica Hayden, Jane D. Monson, Emory J. Trask

Journal of Western Archives

This case study details how the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) Libraries made the shift from a centralized model where digitization took place largely within the archives department, to a decentralized one that encompasses multiple library units. This shift came about as the result of the addition of a digital initiatives librarian position and the formation of a digitization steering committee comprised of employees representing different departments from throughout the Libraries. The result was a marked increase in the number of objects that could be digitized and made available online within a given period of time.

Developing A Typology Of Human Rights Records, Noah Geraci, Michelle Caswell

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

What makes a record a "human rights record"? What types of records fall under this umbrella term? How and why might we develop a typology of such records? What is at stake—ethically, theoretically, and practically—in the ways in which and the reasons why we define and classify records as such? This article seeks to answer these questions by delineating a typology of human rights records. First, this article will provide a literature review exploring the history of conceptions of human rights records in archival studies, as well as the ongoing discussion in information studies more broadly about the politics of …

The Gregory Peck Papers: It's Not Just Hollywood, Clare Denk

Journal of Western Archives

The Gregory Peck papers at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences serve as a case study to demonstrate the value of a collection beyond its expected scope. In this case, four examples are used to highlight how the Peck papers move far beyond the confines of Hollywood by encompassing topics including Hawaii on the eve of its statehood, politics, international fan culture, and post-World War II Japan as seen through the lens of an American GI.

From Transaction To Interaction: Socio-Materiality, Reliability And Transparency In An Age Of "Unbound Documents", Christopher W. Colwell Jan 2016

From Transaction To Interaction: Socio-Materiality, Reliability And Transparency In An Age Of "Unbound Documents", Christopher W. Colwell

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Social media applications, such as Facebook, have been described as “documents without borders”. (Skare & Lund, 2014). In an Australian Government context these documents (which may also be records) exist outside the boundaries of the organisation to which they relate, and which created them. Unlike other documents in an organisational setting, they are “unbound” from the usual organisational processes of creation, management and control but still subject to relevant legislative and recordkeeping obligations (Hesling, 2014).

This paper explores initial themes from the first case study of a larger doctoral study into the perceptions of records in Australian Government agencies. Among …
