From one vantage, those who started their careers decades ago, graduate archival education has made tremendous leaps forward; from another perspective, those in the early years of their careers, education in this field may look spotty, disjointed, and confusing. As I near the end of my career (although old archivists don’t fade away, they get preserved), I have increasingly felt like an archival source in ongoing professional dialogue. A good DMP plan was concise and easy to follow. Writers should not be afraid to take up the maximum allowed space when necessary to explain things so that the reviewers don’t have to think hard/look something up. Below are examples of feedback a consultant might give when reviewing a data management plan. These examples may be used and altered as necessary to fit a variety of situations. The feedback has been divided into three categories: Defining Terms, Details, Data, and Human Research Subject Data.

We are aware that many archival repositories in the West hold sensitive native cultural materials and that many of us live and work on or near historical tribal lands. This proximity offers important opportunities for building trusting relationships that can heal ancient wounds and that create a more just society.

Collaborations between tribal and non-tribal organizations bring diverse communities together, often for the first time, to educate and learn, to address misinterpretations of the past, and to share cultural resources and knowledge. When creating digital collections, different methods and workflows may be considered depending on the size, amount of metadata, and who will be staffing parts of the digitization process. Feeling overwhelmed with 500+ photographs with minimal metadata, I employed an analog tactic: playing a card matching game with printed photographs. Through matching, metadata was enhanced and locations identified more efficiently than staring at a computer screen. The collection was recently published online and has received local and statewide attention, in part due to its enhanced metadata and researched storyline. In the 2014–2015 fiscal year the South Carolina Department of Archives and History decided to embark on the journey to creating a repository that would house and preserve incoming state agency electronic records. This case study discusses the journey of the newly hired electronic records archivist in researching, evaluating, and recommending a digital repository platform. It also provides a set of take-away lessons learned through the process in the hope that it will help other archivists investigating repository platforms.

This collection contains a variety of materials relating to the Community Concert Association and its activities including various programs, PR information, photos, correspondence, worker record sheets, and membership lists of the organization over the years. The collection dates from about 1944 to 1985. However, the only years that contain explicit detail about the organization are between the years of 1976 and 1985. There is not a great deal of historical information about how the Community Concert Association began. The collection ends at 1985.
