Ship Space To Database: Motivations To Manage Research Data For The Deep Subseafloor Biosphere, Peter Darch, Christine Borgman Nov 2014

Ship Space To Database: Motivations To Manage Research Data For The Deep Subseafloor Biosphere, Peter Darch, Christine Borgman

Peter Darch

What motivates the building of databases by scientific collaborations? In this paper, we argue that not only are databases being built to support scientific work per se, but also with the intention of performing a variety of social functions. To explore this, we present findings from a longitudinal ethnographic case study of a large, multidisciplinary, distributed scientific project studying subseafloor microbial life. A critical element of this project’s Data Management Plan is the construction of a data portal. We found a range of factors motivating not only the very construction of this portal, but also the inclusion of particular features. …

Xquery For Archivists: Understanding Ead Finding Aids As Data, Gregory Wiedeman Nov 2014

Xquery For Archivists: Understanding Ead Finding Aids As Data, Gregory Wiedeman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

XML has long been an important tool for archivists. The addition of XQuery provides a simple and easy-to-learn tool to extract, transform, and manipulate the large amounts of XML data that archival repositories have committed resources to develop and maintain – particularly EAD finding aids. XQuery allows archivists to make use of that data. Furthermore, using XQuery to query EAD finding aids, rather than merely reformat them with XSLT, forces archivists to look at finding aids as data. This will provide better knowledge of how EAD may be used and further understanding of how finding aids may be better encoded. …

Everything You Need To Know About Grants: Beginning, Middle And End, Katie Richardson, Melissa Nykanen, Gregory L. Williams, Holly Rose Larson Mcgee, Jamie Henricks

Pepperdine University Libraries

“Everything You Need to Know about Grants: Beginning, Middle and End” was a 90-minute session presented at the Society of California Archivists Annual General Meeting in Berkeley, CA, on April 13, 2013. As a part of the archival community, many of us know that grants are an excellent way to reduce backlogs or accomplish projects we don't have the resources to tackle. However, what many of us may not know is how much work goes into successfully implementing and completing a grant. The purpose of this session was to assemble a group of individuals who have been involved in various …

Spanning Boundaries To Identify Archival Literacy Competencies, Sharon A. Weiner, Sammie L. Morris, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

This paper is a report of a collaborative research project that identified the competencies undergraduate history majors should have related to finding and using archival materials. The boundary-spanning collaboration involved archivists, librarians, and history faculty.

Historians have long relied upon archives as essential source material, and recent studies confirmed the continued significance of archives to research in this field. However, there is no detailed listing of the archival research competencies that college history students should attain. Without a clearly defined list upon which history faculty, archivists, and library liaisons to history departments agree, teaching about archives research is difficult and …

I'M Not A Librarian, I'M A Curator (Como), Sharon Bradley, Thomas J. Striepe

Presentations

A curator collects, organizes, and shares information. Librarians have always been curators. In the ever changing information environment we now need to acknowledge our inner curator and bring those skills to the social media efforts of our institutions. Social content curation is about collecting, organizing, and sharing information in new ways that aid our patrons; they want to follow trusted “filters” of information to save them time. Effective and useful curation can highlight the value of the library in a new way. Identifies skills and tools needed to become social content curators and develop a curation program
