Interpretations Of Patterns And Actors In The Lapp Fund Documents, Geir Grenersen Dec 2014

Interpretations Of Patterns And Actors In The Lapp Fund Documents, Geir Grenersen

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The Lapp Fund (“Finnefondet” in Norwegian) was an important instrument in the norwegianization policy toward the Sámi and Finnish minorities between 1852 – 1921. Two studies, one from the midst 1950s (Dahl 1957) and one from the early 1980s (Eriksen & Niemi 1981), have been the standard works on this period. Recent archival studies (Grenersen N.d. & Maliniemi 2009, 2010) prove the need for a new look at the Lapp Fund documents. Through a detailed archival study Maliniemi has shown that the Sámi and the Finnish languages was much used in a local political administration. But the documents written in …

Words Matter: Documents Of The Departed, Thomas Atwood Dec 2014

Words Matter: Documents Of The Departed, Thomas Atwood

Proceedings from the Document Academy

As families begin to experience the passing of loved ones from a ‘silent generation’, they will be forced to make decisions about the physical belongings of those who lived in a Depression Era mentality. Some of these choices will be easy, as one may possess little sentiment over a clock or a set of dishes. Other decisions will be trying, as these items will surely invoke conversations that make us reconsider the meaning of the words keep, want, need, and discard. This paper discusses the documents of Dr. Lloyd Mills (1927-2013), Professor Emeritus of English, at Kent State University. For …

Filling In The Gaps: Using Outreach Efforts To Acquire Documentation On The Black Campus Movement, 1965-1972, Lae'l Hughes-Watkins

Lae'l Hughes-Watkins

From 1965 to 1972, the United States was in the grip of a new wave of black student activism through protests and demonstrations at college and university campuses from coast to coast. Academic institutions were deluged with demands for increasing black faculty hires, developing black studies programs/departments, and increasing the number of black student admissions. Kent State University was one of the thousands of colleges and universities challenged to address the demands of a demographic who felt their civil rights were under siege within the walls of academic establishments. This article describes the attempts by the Department of Special Collec- …

Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items

This collection consists of more than 450 panels of the “Muggs and Skeeter” cartoon drawn by Wallace Bond “Wally” Bishop, a longtime resident of St. Petersburg. Wally Bishop and his wife, Louise C. Bishop became leaders in a variety of social circles and cultural organizations in the greater St. Petersburg area. In the late 1930s, they bought the elaborate mansion constructed by C. In Louise’s later life, her profound concern for ethics in undergraduate education led to the establishment of the Bishop Center for Ethical Leadership and Civic …

Media Now: A Historical Review Of A Media Literacy Curriculum, Yonty Friesem, Diane Quaglia Beltran, Ed Crane

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The Elizabeth Thoman Archive at the Harrington School of Communication and Media, University of Rhode Island, has the last complete kit of one of the milestones in the early chronology of media literacy, the 1972 Media Now curriculum. This curriculum was the first of its kind, using self-contained lesson modules that were part of a larger series of kits, text references, and accompanying workbook. Its self-directed learning model gave students the opportunity to learn about the media, by doing, responding to, and reflecting on core concepts of media production. Using physical artifacts from the Media Now kit, historical documents, promotional …
