"Introduction" To Burning Decisions: Case Studies On Appraisal For Access, Ruth E. Bryan Aug 2014

"Introduction" To Burning Decisions: Case Studies On Appraisal For Access, Ruth E. Bryan

Library Presentations

In the United States, archival appraisal has been a key step in providing access to records, largely in response to the bulk of modern organizational records, the gaps in documenting underrepresented individuals and groups, and the shrinking of resources. With Frank Boles moderating and commenting, four archivists describe appraisal decisions that they applied while acquiring or administering large or complex collections and reflect on the selection paradigms that they applied in the decision-making process to enable access.

Burns Like Dust: 1 House, 8 Collections, 7 Repositories, Ruth E. Bryan Aug 2014

Burns Like Dust: 1 House, 8 Collections, 7 Repositories, Ruth E. Bryan

Library Presentations

This case study is about collection development policies, both on the repository level as well as applying them within individual collections, specifically faculty papers. "Dust" is a metaphor for both the on-the-ground experience of archival appraisal as well as for the “dust” of people’s lives and events that historians are “breathing in” when they work with primary source material (Carol Steedman, Dust: The archive and cultural history, 2002). From the perspective of the cultural value of archives, this “dust” is what we select when we’re transforming a mountain of paper or electronic records into archives.

University Archives And Community Organizations: Ensuring Access Through Collaboration, Jessica R. Holden, Andrew Elder, Joanne Riley

Joseph P. Healey Library Publications

How can a university archives establish a successful ongoing relationship with a community organization? What are the benefits and challenges of such a collaboration? University of Massachusetts Boston’s Archives and Special Collections (UASC) explored these questions while working with The Irish Ancestral Research Association (TIARA) to preserve and provide access to 79,000 mortuary records from the Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters. Elements of the collaboration included shifting stewardship of the records from the Foresters to TIARA to UMass Boston, integrating TIARA’s efforts in processing and indexing the records into the Archives’ workflow, providing in-person and electronic access to the records, …

From Theory To Action: A Pragmatic Approach To Digital Preservation Strategies And Tools, Meg Miner

Meg Miner

Cultural heritage practitioners who lack the advantages of specialization that come with a larger staff and budget feel overwhelmed by the many facets of digital preservation. Professionals in these situations do not know how to take the next steps from awareness to action, and so the risk to their collections remains unmitigated. What can individuals do to move beyond understanding the need for digital preservation and towards effective stewardship of digital collections? The goal of this project is to investigate scalable and practical solutions, including potential business and implementation models, that provide equitable access to digital preservation processes for smaller …

Decorative Bindings In The Rare Book Collection, Jeffrey D. Marshall

UVM Libraries Conference Day

Jeff's interest in learning more about bookbinding came about because of a recent donation from the David Richardson estate to the Special Collections Dept. Jeff knew there were some interesting examples of bindings in this donated collection, and he wanted to better understand what we now owned. In this presentation, he showed examples of books from the “hand-press era,” i.e. from the beginning of printing in the 15th century to 1800, when printing presses were powered by hand.
