Kashmiri Marsiya (Elegy) Manuscripts: The Valuable Sources For The Dissemination, Reconstruction And Safeguarding The History And Culture-Ii, Tawfeeq Nazir

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Manuscripts are the links to the historical facts that will otherwise remain unknown to the world. They contain authentic information and facts about the social, political and cultural aspects of a nation. Therefore their intellectual value cannot be over emphasized. Marsiya or Elegy has gained more importance after the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s) and his companions and household in Karbala. Marsiya has been since written and recited in order to mourning the tragic events of …

Personal Digital Archiving: Strategies, Challenges, And Affecting Factors From A Quantitative Perspective, Donghee Sinn

Information Science Faculty Scholarship

This study examines the practices, challenges, and other technological and personal factors of personal digital archiving. Many studies regarding personal digital archiving have taken qualitative approaches to explore perceptions and behaviors. There has not been much research with quantitative methods to find the general patterns of archiving behaviors and the relationships between factors and practices. Based on the findings from existing qualitative studies, this study created an online survey to quantify personal digital archiving practices and related perceptions and challenges. The survey was employed to investigate to what extent people show a certain behavior or feel a certain challenge when …

Digitization For Preservation And Access: Restoring The Usefulness Of The Nitrate Negative Collections At The American Geographical Society Library, Krystyna K. Matusiak, Tamara K. Johnston

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship

Film-based photographic collections of nitrate negatives pose major challenges to preservation and access because of unstable media and the lack of item-level indexing. Digitization offers an opportunity to capture the content of deteriorating negatives, to extend access to them, and to restore their usefulness as information resources. Digitization as a preservation strategy has been the subject of ongoing debate. This article contributes to the discussion by exploring access to and the preservation of film-based photographic collections and by presenting the digiti- zation project at the American Geographical Society Library as a case study. The project, Saving and Sharing the AGS …

"Billy Dean" Scrapbook [A Collection Guide], Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. Special Collections And University Archives., Anthony J. Casale

Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items

This scrapbook includes a compilation of newspaper clippings from a variety of sources and covers the mid-1930s. Approximately one-half of these clippings focus on stories related to St. Petersburg or Florida more broadly, while the remainder cover events as broad as English royalty to the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-1936). The compiler of the materials in this scrapbook is unknown, though the name “Billy Dean” appears on this document. It is uncertain as to whether this was an actual proper name, or whether it was a nickname or pseudonym. Jen Runyon donated this scrapbook and another one that captures the activities …

Assessing Hands-On Learning In Special Collections: A Pilot Study, Sarah M. Horowitz, Stefanie R. Bluemle, Ellen Hay, Mark Salisbury

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

This Assessment in Action project addressed the effect of using original primary materials on first-year students’ information literacy (IL) and critical thinking skills. IL and critical thinking are among Augustana College’s college-wide student learning outcomes. More than 25% of Augustana first-years use Special Collections each year, yet we had little data on how this affected student learning. The study evaluated a worksheet given as a pre- and post-test around class visits to work in Special Collections, and papers by students who did and did not visit Special Collections with class.

Freedom Is Everybody's Business: Using Multi-Faceted Outreach To Draw Student Attention To Local Archival Collections On The Civil Rights Movement Of The 1960s, Joshua Youngblood

University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations

As the recent celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington demonstrated, numerous digital projects and numerous scholarly and popular print publications have made the grander stories and lessons of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s widely available. But what about the lesser known heroes and the local and regional episodes that have not received the same level of interest? Manuscript collections that capture those hidden stories, integral to the achievements—and setbacks—of the Civil Rights Movement, can provide students access to richer understandings of the social and political watersheds of the era. By utilizing select …
