Computer Use In The Scientific Office, Douglas L. Miller
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Over the past two decades computers in research and development organizations have become a complex and integral part of the work process. Yet to date only a handful of systematic investigations have addressed issues involving scientists' or other professionals' use of computers, and very little is known about factors influencing use (Bikson and Gutek, 1983; Blacker and Brown, 1986; Collopy, 1988; Gasser, 1986; Helander, 1985; Nickolson, 1985; Pope, 1985). As a result, this research was designed to address four objectives. The first was to develop and evaluate a descriptive model of variables influencing scientists' computer use. The second objective was …

Public Benefit And Private Interest: Chronicles Of The Hyde Park Paper Mill, Jeffrey E. Lindenthal
Public Benefit And Private Interest: Chronicles Of The Hyde Park Paper Mill, Jeffrey E. Lindenthal
New England Journal of Public Policy
Until it was mothballed and put up for sale in December 1987, a small paper mill in Hyde Park, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Boston 's city limits, was the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States. This particular plant closing occurred at a time manufacturing employment in the state had fallen off precipitously. It also coincided with an awareness among some policymakers that recycling programs were urgently needed to combat a garbage glut, in Massachusetts and states across the nation, attributable to an increasingly wasteful society and dwindling landfill capacity. Efforts to reopen the Hyde Park …

Finances And The Social Settlement: The Management Of Hull House, Roger A. Lohmann
Finances And The Social Settlement: The Management Of Hull House, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The development of social welfare history has powerful implications for the study of community practice theory. This historical study examines the Hull House social settlement as an actual, working social service establishment, rather than simply the stage for the activities of its most famous resident, Jane Addams. Hull House is examined as an organization, a campus, and a pioneering set of social programs. Its incorporation, by-laws are examined and all board members serving during Addams' 40 years there are identified. Various aspects of dealing with important donors, cash flows from donations and accountability issues are identified and discussed, as are …

Foreign Exchange Policy And Management, Olukole A. R.
Bullion
The interdependence of countries in terms of trade has grown so much that, perhaps, "no country can lay absolute claim on self-sufficiency in its resource requirements or lay absolute claim on a perfectly balanced supply of resource" . By extension, since resources are limited and scarce, the need for policy formulation and management of the resources be comes inevitable. Accordingly, Part 1 of this paper highlights the foreign currency management tools. Part II discusses the policies in external economies. Part Ill deals in details with the foreign currency policy in Nigeria while Part IV gives the conclusion.

Discovery Of Selected Water Dispensers By Newborn Pigs, P. A. Phillips, D. Fraser
Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
Newborn pigs in 86 litters were offered drinking water from four types of dispenser to determine how quickly each design would be discovered. On average piglets discovered water within about 24 h from an exposed water surface (bowl or cup), whereas discovery time was delayed to more than 72 h with nipple or push-lever dispensers. A prototype dispenser with a wide bowl and continuous bubbling action reduced (P < 0.05) average discovery time to about 14 h.
