Scholarship and Professional Work
Some convenience store companies that survived the 1980s may reflect upon those years as the "decade of problems." Yet now they can look forward to the 1990s as a decade of change and opportunity.

Similarities And Differences In The Adult Learner: A Comparison Of Student Perceptions Motivations And Needs By Age Cohort, Joan Elizabeth Patten
Similarities And Differences In The Adult Learner: A Comparison Of Student Perceptions Motivations And Needs By Age Cohort, Joan Elizabeth Patten
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
The majority of literature dealing with the adult learner concept revolves around teaching methodologies or learning capabilities. While there is some literature on motivation in adult learners, the general assumption is that all those over the age of 25 are similarly motivated and share common perceptions.
To determine whether student perceptions, motivations and needs could be distinguished by age categories, survey results of 936 students at Sinclair Community College were categorized within 4 age cohorts. Results indicate that: 1) both traditionally-aged students as well as non-traditional students share some common perceptions; and 2) cohorts within the non-traditional student population may …

Promoting Export Activity In The Dayton Economy, Deena Lyn Will
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
The development and implementation of a mail questionnaire proved to satisfy the goal of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce to promote export activity in the region. The results of the survey indicate that over one third of the respondents to the survey are actively engaged in exporting. The identification on these firms will allow the Chamber to more effectively promote their goods and services abroad.
The manipulation of the results obtained from the survey will be used to publish a listing of companies in the Dayton area engaged in exporting goods and services to foreign countries. The resultant export …
Dynamic Bargaining With Transaction Costs, Peter Cramton
Dynamic Bargaining With Transaction Costs, Peter Cramton
Peter Cramton
A buyer and seller alternate making offers until an offer is accepted or someone terminates negotiations. The seller's valuation is common knowledge, but the buyer's valuation is known only by the buyer. Impatience to reach an agreement comes from two sources: the traders discount future payoffs and there are transaction costs of bargaining. Equilibrium behavior involves either immediate trade, delayed trade, or immediate termination, depending on the size of the gains from trade and the relative bargaining costs. This contrasts with the pure discounting model where termination never occurs, and the pure transaction cost model where delayed trade never occurs.
Shrewd Bargaining On The Moral Frontier: Toward A Theory Of Morality In Practice, Peter Cramton, J Gregory Dees
Shrewd Bargaining On The Moral Frontier: Toward A Theory Of Morality In Practice, Peter Cramton, J Gregory Dees
Peter Cramton
From a traditional moral point of view, business practitioners often seem overly concerned about the behavior of their peers in deciding how they ought to act. We propose to account for this concern by introducing a mutual trust perspective, where moral obligations are grounded in a sense of trust that others will abide by the same rules. When grounds for trust are absent, the obligation is weakened. We illustrate this perspective by examining the widespread ambivalence with regard to deception about one’s settlement preferences in negotiation. On an abstract level, such deception generally seems undesirable, though in many individual cases …

U.S. Technology Transfer To China: Problems And Perspectives, Yalan Jiang
U.S. Technology Transfer To China: Problems And Perspectives, Yalan Jiang
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
The subject of technology transfer has been an area of wide-range interest and significance for many years, especially in the recent past, as Japan and the Newly Industrialized Nations (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) have set themselves as successful examples in area of technology transfer. Recognizing the importance of technology transfer to its national economic development, China started the unprecedented movement of technology transfer along with its economic reform in the late 1970s.
Great achievements have been made in the area of agriculture, industry, science and technology, and defense. However, many problems have emerged during the process of …

Enrollment Forecasting At Sinclair Community College, Scott David O'Bryant
Enrollment Forecasting At Sinclair Community College, Scott David O'Bryant
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
Sinclair Community College, like all institutions of higher education, has tremendous need for accurate enrollment forecasts. Until recently, using a combination of forecasting tools, the forecasts generated by the Office of Institutional Planning and Research (IPR) have been quite adequate. Recently, however, the accuracy of the enrollment predictions has waned considerably. In an effort to reverse this trend, it was decided to add another, previously untried, forecasting method to the IPR arsenal: Autoregressive Integrated Moving Averages, or ARIMA.
ARIMA models are a time series forecasting tool developed by Box and Jenkins in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After careful …
Automation Of The Directorate Of Research And Development Contracting At Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Anthony W. Everidge
Automation Of The Directorate Of Research And Development Contracting At Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Anthony W. Everidge
Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)
This thesis examines the automation of the Directorate of Research and Development Contracting at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Background information on the Directorate is given along with the previous methods of producing contractual documents. The central problem of the thesis is to determine if the benefits of automating the Directorate outweigh the costs. A cost benefit analysis was used to make this determination. Each cost and each benefit is discussed in great detail along with the methodology used to measure each particular cost and benefit. The results of the study showed that the net present value of all benefits was …
