Asymptotic And Exact Tests In 2 X C Ordered Categorical Contingency Tables With Statxact 2.0 - 4.0, Margaret Posch

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The purpose of this study was to compare the statistical power of a variety of exact tests in the 2 x C ordered categorical contingency table using StatXact software. The Wilcoxon Rank Sum, Expected Nonnal Scores, Savage Scores (or its Log Rank equivalent), and Permutation tests were studied. Results indicated that the procedures were nearly the same in terms of comparative statistical power.

The subroutines in Rangen 2.0 were written using Essential Lahey Fortran 90, a proper subset of Fortran 90. It includes both source code for the subroutines and a short description of each subroutine, its purpose, and the arguments including data type and usage.

An Unconditional Exact Test For Small Samples Matched Binary Pairs, Robert A. Malkin May 2002

An Unconditional Exact Test For Small Samples Matched Binary Pairs, Robert A. Malkin

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

When investigators have N pairs of binary data, a common test for an increased rate of response is McNemar's test. However, McNemar's is an approximate, conditional test. An exact, unconditional test exists, but requires restrictive assumptions. Critical values and power tables are presented for an exact, unconditional test free of these assumptions.

Impervious Surfaces And Water Quality: A Review Of Current Literature And Its Implications For Watershed Planning, Elizabeth Brabec May 2002

Impervious Surfaces And Water Quality: A Review Of Current Literature And Its Implications For Watershed Planning, Elizabeth Brabec

Elizabeth Brabec

Impervious surfaces have for many years been recognized as an indicator of the intensity of the urban environment and, with the advent of urban sprawl, they have become a key issue in habitat health. Although a considerable amount of research has been done to define impervious thresholds for water quality degradation, there are a number of flaws in the assumptions and methodologies used. Given refinement of the methodology, accurate and usable parameters for preventative watershed planning can be developed, which include impervious surface thresholds and a balance between pervious and impervious surfaces within a watershed.

A Measure Of Relative Efficiency For Location Of A Single Sample, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky May 2002

A Measure Of Relative Efficiency For Location Of A Single Sample, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The question of how much to trim or which weighting constant to use are practical considerations in applying robust methods such as trimmed means (L-estimators) and Huber statistics (M-estimators). An index oflocation relative efficiency (LRE), which is a ratio of the narrowness of resulting confidence intervals, was applied to various trimmed means and Huber M-estimators calculated on seven representative data sets from applied education and psychology research. On the basis of LREs, lightly trimmed means were found to be more efficient than heavily trimmed means, but Huber M-estimators systematically produced narrower confidence intervals. The weighting constant of ψ = 1.28 …

Two-Sided Equivalence Testing Of The Difference Between Two Means, R. Clifford Blair, Stephen R. Cole May 2002

Two-Sided Equivalence Testing Of The Difference Between Two Means, R. Clifford Blair, Stephen R. Cole

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Studies designed to examine the equivalence of treatments are increasingly common in social and biomedical research. Herein, we outline the rationale and some nuances underlying equivalence testing of the difference between two means. Specifically, we note the odd relation between tests of hypothesis and confidence intervals in the equivalence setting.

Recommendations are offered for data analysts in terms of each package's strengths and weaknesses.

Jmasm3: A Method For Simulating Systems Of Correlated Binary Data, Todd C. Headrick May 2002

Jmasm3: A Method For Simulating Systems Of Correlated Binary Data, Todd C. Headrick

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

An efficient algorithm is derived for generating systems of correlated binary data. The procedure allows for the specification of all pairwise correlations within each system. Intercorrelations between systems can be specified qualitatively. The procedure requires the simultaneous solution of a system of equations for obtaining the threshold probabilities to generate each system of binary data. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate that the procedure generates correlated binary variables that yield correlations in close agreement with the specified population correlations.

Rank-Based Procedures For Mixed Paired And Two-Sample Designs, Suzanne R. Dubnicka, R. Clifford Blair, Thomas P. Hettmansperger May 2002

Rank-Based Procedures For Mixed Paired And Two-Sample Designs, Suzanne R. Dubnicka, R. Clifford Blair, Thomas P. Hettmansperger

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This paper presents a rank-based procedure for parameter estimation and hypothesis testing when the data are a mixture of paired observations and independent samples. Such a situation may arise when comparing two treatments. When both treatments can be applied to a subject, paired data will be generated. When it is not possible to apply both treatments, the subject will be randomly assigned to one of the treatment groups. Our rank-based procedure allows us to use the data from the paired sample and the independent samples to make inferences about the difference in the mean responses. The rank-based procedure uses both …

Modeling Quality Of Service For Workflows And Web Service Processes, Jorge Cardoso, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth, Jonathan Arnold May 2002

Modeling Quality Of Service For Workflows And Web Service Processes, Jorge Cardoso, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth, Jonathan Arnold

Kno.e.sis Publications

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) have been used to support various types of business processes for more than a decade now. In workflows for e-commerce and Web-services applications, suppliers and customers define a binding agreement or contract between the two parties, specifying Quality of Service (QoS) items such as products or services to be delivered, deadlines, quality of products, and cost of services. The management of QoS metrics directly impacts the success of organizations participating in e-commerce. Therefore, when services or products are created or managed using workflows, the underlying workflow system must accept the specifications and be able to estimate, …

Aerosol Optical Depth At Cape Grim, Tasmania 1986-1999, Stephen R. Wilson, B. W. Forgan Apr 2002

Aerosol Optical Depth At Cape Grim, Tasmania 1986-1999, Stephen R. Wilson, B. W. Forgan

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The aerosol optical depth at 4 wavelengths (368, 500, 778 and 868nm) has been measured automatically at Cape Grim since 1986. The site, on the northwest tip of Tasmania, Australia was chosen to be representative of much of the southern ocean. Fourteen years of measurement have been calibrated and analyzed. The data have been filtered so that only measurements made under on-shore wind conditions are considered. The major feature observed in the record is the eruption of Mt Pinatubo, which resulted in the aerosol optical depth at 500 nm rising to 0.2 – 0.3. If the period of high stratospheric …

Asp -Pricing: A Black -Scholes Option Pricing Formulation, Chaitanya Singh Apr 2002

Asp -Pricing: A Black -Scholes Option Pricing Formulation, Chaitanya Singh

Doctoral Dissertations

The Applications Service Provider (ASP) arrangement has engendered a revolution in the area of corporate information technology (IT) by transforming software from a packaged off-the-shelf product to an on-line virtual service.

The focus of this study is to establish a sound mathematical foundation for evaluating software rental agreements (embedding exit flexibility) by incorporating a real options framework (based upon the Black-Scholes approach) into the traditional capital budgeting technique. The static discounted cash flow or net present value analysis may not adequately serve as a ‘barometer’ of outsourcing value due to its inherent weaknesses. On the other hand, the options approach …

In 2001, the arsenic standard for drinking water was lowered from 50 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion. The clean-up costs for Nevada are estimated at approximately 400 million dollars. The purpose of this project is to examine the economic impacts the State of Nevada will absorb as a result of the new regulation. Research of historical data will be the basis for the project. National data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and data collected from the State of Nevada will be accompanied by comparable research data found through other sources

Traffic Simulation Using Arena, Shanti Yelamanchi Apr 2002

Traffic Simulation Using Arena, Shanti Yelamanchi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Many traffic simulation tools exist for developing traffic simulations; these tools can be divided broadly into two categories — macro simulation tools and micro simulation tools. These two categories of simulation tools are directed at modeling the extremes of traffic systems: very large systems and very small systems. There is a class of intermediate-sized transportation networks for which neither category of simulation tools might perform adequately. Additionally these specialized traffic simulation tools have a high learning curve. For developing medium sized traffic simulations in a short period of time, one might choose to use a familiar general-purpose discrete event simulation …

Smart Growth And Land Acquisition Priorities, New England Environmental Finance Center Mar 2002

Smart Growth And Land Acquisition Priorities, New England Environmental Finance Center

Land Conservation

It is well-known and generally accepted that all undeveloped land in New England cannot forever be protected from development; nor would this be a desirable goal, as continued economic development and population growth are near certainties. For these and other reasons, private land trusts and government agencies generally use explicit criteria to prioritize their land acquisition activities and prospects.

Much land protection in New England and elsewhere, however, has occurred without substantial attention to such land use needs as fostering the best locations for where people will live, businesses will locate, and infrastructure will be built to avoid degrading resources. …

Agricultural Land Fragmentation: The Spatial Effects Of Three Land Protection Strategies In The Eastern United States, Elizabeth Brabec, Chip Smith Feb 2002

Agricultural Land Fragmentation: The Spatial Effects Of Three Land Protection Strategies In The Eastern United States, Elizabeth Brabec, Chip Smith

Elizabeth Brabec

Fragmentation of agricultural land by urban sprawl affects both the agricultural production capacity of the land and its rural scenic quality. In order to assess the resulting fragmentation of the three most common types of agricultural land conservation tools in the United States, this study analyzes the spatial form of three land protection strategies: a purchase of development rights (PDR) program, a clustering program and a transfer of development rights program. By assessing a series of measures of success such as total acreage protected, size of parcels, contiguity and farming status, the study compares the effectiveness of programs that have …
