Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1988-89, Paul E. Rider Jan 1989

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1988-89, Paul E. Rider

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Starting in 1976, annual reports have served as a continuing record of the activities of the Iowa Academy of Science. These augment a 100 year history of the Academy which was written in the centennial year of 1975.

This report covers the period from July 1, 1988 to June 30, 1989. It is based on the official records of the Academy (committee reports, Board minutes, correspondence) as well as the recollections, impressions and musings of the author, who is writing his first annual report.

Estimates Of Genetic Variability In F2 Maize Populations, Geng-Chen Han, A. R. Hallauer Jan 1989

Estimates Of Genetic Variability In F2 Maize Populations, Geng-Chen Han, A. R. Hallauer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Maize (Zea mays L.) breeders emphasize selection within F2 populations derived from crosses of inbred lines: Studies of the inheritance of quantitative traits in maize have been conducted primarily for generically broad-based populations. Objectives of our study were to estimate the generic variability in F2 populations developed from crosses of related and unrelated lines and to determine the effects of five generations of random intermating of plants within F2 populations on the estimates of genetic variability. Estimates of additive genetic variability were greater in the unrelated line crosses, but the estimates were not significantly different before and …

Characterization Of Aminoisobutyric Acid Transport Systems In Mcf-8, A Line Of Malignant Mouse Mammary Epithelial Cells, Bruce A. Voyles Jan 1989

Characterization Of Aminoisobutyric Acid Transport Systems In Mcf-8, A Line Of Malignant Mouse Mammary Epithelial Cells, Bruce A. Voyles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Uptake of α-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) by MCF-8, a line of malignant mouse mammary epithelial cells derived from a D2 hyperplastic nodule outgrowth, was found to be mediated by two different transport systems. In actively dividing cells about 60% of total AIB uptake is mediated by an A-like system: transport was Na+ -dependent, was inhibited by N-methyl-AIB, was maximal at pH 7.5 and ceased at pH 6. Transport by this system was reduced by nearly 65% when cell division ceased in confluent cultures, but the addition of insulin and/or calf serum to the medium of quiescent cells restored activity. Transport by …

Nesting Of Raptors Uncommon In Iowa: Summary And New Records, Dean M. Roosa, Jon Stravers

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The nesting status of the Turkey Vulture, Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Swainson's Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, Common Barn-Owl, Burrowing Owl, Long-eared Owl and Short-eared Owl is reviewed and previously unpublished records added. Also the potential for the Northern Saw-whet Owl and Osprey to nest in Iowa is discussed. Although several species are on the brink of extirpation as part of Iowa's nesting avifauna, the Bald Eagle has returned as a regular nester. Over 100 previously unpublished nesting reports and some management recommendations are included.

A Non-Gall Forming Eurosta Solidaginis (Diptera: Tephritidae), W. Bryan Stoltzfus

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Eurosta Jolidaginis (Fitch) can parasitize Solidago canadensis without forming a gall. This non-gall former apparently escapes most of the parasitism and predation of the gall forming fly. Levels of host-plane infestation by non-gall formers may approach the frequency of gall formation.

The Scientist's Role In The Controversy Over Genetic Engineering, Regulation And Utilization Of Microorganisms: A Symposium Presented At The L00th Annual Meeting Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa April 21-23, 1988: Introduction, Arthur K. Weissinger

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The introduction of technologies for the direct genetic manipulation or alteration of organisms offers tremendous promise of improved agronomic prosperity through the enhancement of existing agricultural systems and through development of alternative products and methods. These technologies also pose philosophical, socioeconomic, and environmental questions. A number of these questions were considered at the bioethics symposium that was held here at Iowa State last November, the purpose of which was to examine the social, ethical, regulatory, and legal issues associated with the application of cell culture, molecular biology, and other so-called biotechnologies to agriculture.

Pollen Fertility And Agronomic Performance Of Sorghum Hybrids With Different Male-Sterility-Inducing Cytoplasms, R. E. Secrist, R. E. Atkins

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Effects of three sources of male-sterility-inducing cytoplasm in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] were compared in crosses with 217 male parents. Hybrids of these parents and A2 Redbine 58', 'A3 Combine Kafir 60', and 'A4 Martin' female parents were evaluated for percentage stained pollen, seed set of bagged panicles, plant height, and days to midbloom. Additionally, hybrids of 12 of the inbreds crossed to each female parent were evaluated for grain yield and other agronomic traits in comparison with hybrids in A1 male-sterility-inducing cytoplasm.

Twenty-one inbreds restored pollen fertility to hybrids with A2 cytoplasm, 11 restored pollen fertility to …

Cytoplasmic Effect On Groat Protein Content In Lnterspecific Matings Of Avena Sativa L. And A. Sterilis L., A. Rezai, K. J. Frey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Thirty sets of reciprocal isopopulations, each with 20 Fi-derived oat lines from the BC0, BC1, and BC2 of all possible matings among five Awia slerilis L. accessions and two A. saliva cultivars, were evaluated in a replicated field trial to determine whether groat protein content was influenced by cytoplasmic inheritance and to study associations between protein content and agronomic traits. A. slerili cytoplasm had no direct effect on groat protein content, but significant interactions between the cytoplasms and nuclear genes from A. saliva and A. s1erilis were detected. Thus, the potential may exist for improving …

Resources For Inventorying Plants In The Southeast Asian Tropics: Plans For The Future, J.S. Burley, P.F. Stevens, E.A. Wood

Biology Department Faculty Works

We aimed to cover two issues in this workshop; the third arose during the course of the discussion: 1. The need for an increased rate of collecting in the Southeast Asian tropical area (‘Malesia’ for short) if taxonomic decisions in the ‘Flora Malesiana’ and other taxonomic projects are to be soundly based and, more generally, if there are to be materials adequate for the future needs of taxonomy. 2. The likelihood that any attempt to increase collecting, or even simply to continue collecting at the present rate, without paying adequate attention to the distribution, mounting, and preservation of the specimens …

Enforcement In The Exclusive Economic Zone: Harmonizing National Legislation With Special Reference To Asean States, Rayner Stuel Galid Jan 1989

Enforcement In The Exclusive Economic Zone: Harmonizing National Legislation With Special Reference To Asean States, Rayner Stuel Galid

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The 1982 Third United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea provides only broad guidelines for many matters. One such area is in the provision of enforcement rights to the coastal State in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Thus, the specifics have to be worked out by the concerned nations in their domestic legislation. This expansive latitude may occasion the lack of uniformity in coastal States' EEZ laws and regulations. These different legislation may foster incompatible enforcement policies on the part of the coastal States which in turn may cause international friction. Harmonization of laws is the deliberate alignment …

Virginia's Pelagic Recreational Fishery: Biological, Socioeconomic And Fishery Components, Eleanor A. Bochenek Jan 1989

Virginia's Pelagic Recreational Fishery: Biological, Socioeconomic And Fishery Components, Eleanor A. Bochenek

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Catch, effort, fleet size and boat owner expenditure data were collected on Virginia's recreational marlin/tuna fishery for the 1983-1985 seasons. Logbooks, dockside interviews and a telephone survey were evaluated to determine which method was the most efficient and effective for collecting and estimating catch and effort for Virginia's pelagic recreational fishery. In 1984, logbooks were used to collect catch and effort data and fishing effort was estimated using Bochenek's method. Very few fishermen returned their logbooks and as a result this data is probably less reliable than the data collected in other years. Due to the poor return of logbooks, …
