Complexity Science: A Framework For Psychotherapy Integration, Günter Schiepek, David Pincus Apr 2023

Complexity Science: A Framework For Psychotherapy Integration, Günter Schiepek, David Pincus

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

The paradigm of complexity science provides a new way to address the problem of psychotherapy integration and allows us to bypass the various shortcomings of the linear-interventionist perspective. Nine criteria are outlined, which should be satisfied by any integrative approach to psychotherapy: (a) the use of complexity science to provide a meta-theoretical and generic understanding of change processes (from neuronal to social system levels); (b) a comprehensive and formalised modelling of change processes and personality development; (c) an integrative method of case formulation; (d) the ability to understand a variety of techniques in terms of basic change principles; (e) criteria …

Journal of Appalachian Health

Introduction: Opioid addiction and opioid-related overdoses and deaths are serious public health problems nationally and in West Virginia, in particular. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an effective yet underutilized treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD).

Purpose: Research examining factors that help individuals succeed in MAT has been conducted from provider and program perspectives, but little research has been conducted from the perspective of those in recovery.

Methods: This study, co-developed with individuals in recovery, took place in West Virginia-based MAT programs using an exploratory sequential mixed methods approach. The survey was open February through August 2021. Data were analyzed late 2021 …

The Limits Of Using An Anti-Semitism Rhetoric Against The Anti-Zionist Discourse: The Case Of Jewish Voice For Peace, Haoua Lebbal Apr 2023

The Limits Of Using An Anti-Semitism Rhetoric Against The Anti-Zionist Discourse: The Case Of Jewish Voice For Peace, Haoua Lebbal

International Conference on Hate Studies

This presentation tracks the historical manipulation of the anti-Semitic rhetoric, from the conservative Jewish reactions against the American Council of Judaism during WWII, to contemporary ones against the anti-Zionist activism of JVP. It also provides an insight into the scholarly and structured arguments proposed by JVP’s contributors against the anti-Semitic label and libel, and ultimately seeks to denounce the lexical and ideological manipulation of the anti-Semitism – both as a term and a phenomenon – by conservative parties for conservative prospects.

A Fake Future: The Threat Of Foreign Disinformation On The U.S. And Its Allies, Brandon M. Rubsamen Apr 2023

A Fake Future: The Threat Of Foreign Disinformation On The U.S. And Its Allies, Brandon M. Rubsamen

Global Tides

This paper attempts to explain the threat that foreign disinformation poses for the United States Intelligence Community and its allies. The paper examines Russian disinformation from both a historical and contemporary context and how its effect on Western democracies may only be exacerbated in light of Chinese involvement and evolving technologies. Fortunately, the paper also studies practices and strategies that the United States Intelligence Community and its allied foreign counterparts may use to respond. It is hoped that this study will help shed further light on Russian and Chinese disinformation campaigns and explain how the Intelligence Community can efficiently react.

Diversity In The American Church: A Case Focus On The Korean Immigrant Church, Claire Lee Apr 2023

Diversity In The American Church: A Case Focus On The Korean Immigrant Church, Claire Lee

Global Tides

There are ethnic factions that exist within the Christian Church in the United States, and every ethnic faction seems to be marked by a set of theological or cultural features that distinguish it from other factions. This paper explores the socio-political history, function, and future direction of the Korean Immigrant Church (KIC). Specifically, this paper analyzes the origins of the robust connection between the Korean immigrant population and Protestant Christianity, the functional importance of the KIC, and demographic changes within KICs in the 21st Century. This paper also discusses a broader application of the KIC to other ethnically homogeneous Christian …

Contradiction And Juche, Philosophical Deviations From Traditional Dialectical Materialism By Kim Il Sung And Mao Zedong Necessitated By Socio-Political Conditions, Thomas Bidewell Apr 2023

Contradiction And Juche, Philosophical Deviations From Traditional Dialectical Materialism By Kim Il Sung And Mao Zedong Necessitated By Socio-Political Conditions, Thomas Bidewell

Global Tides

This work will attempt to attribute the deviations from the traditional Marxist dialectic in the cases of Mao Zedong and Kim Il Sung to their necessitated governing philosophies, and thus their geopolitical conditions. In the case of Mao, this governing philosophy is ‘State-Building Socialism’, a hyper-materialist reappropriation of Marxist materialism crafted to raze internal cultural and economic hierarchy through isolating Contradictions, a rebranding of dialectics. In the case of Kim, a framework of ‘Ethnic Anti-Colonialism’ is adopted through the creation of Juche, an anti-materialist philosophy with references to Hegelianism to wrestle back the agency of ethnic Koreans against Imperialism.

Music And Mood Regulation: The Effect Of Upbeat Music On Moods, Abiola Adebayo Apr 2023

Music And Mood Regulation: The Effect Of Upbeat Music On Moods, Abiola Adebayo

Student Academic Conference

Research suggests that emotional regulation plays a vital role in mental and physical health and that music is often used for mood regulation. This research explored how music is used for mood regulation and the general effect of music on moods. This study examined the adaptive and maladaptive use of music for mood regulation. Two groups of participants were used; half of the participants were randomly assigned to melancholy music, and the other half were randomly assigned to upbeat music. A questionnaire containing The Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) was used to measure current mood states before and after …

“Sharenting” And Child Privacy: A Content Analysis Of Parent Bloggers’ Instagram Posts, Abiola Adebayo Apr 2023

“Sharenting” And Child Privacy: A Content Analysis Of Parent Bloggers’ Instagram Posts, Abiola Adebayo

Student Academic Conference

In this age of artificial intelligence and identity theft, there is an increasing concern for online safety. In recent years, there has been an increase in parents sharing more of their children's lives on the Internet, a trend known as "sharenting”. Beyond posing potential security risks, many of these children do not or cannot consent to publicly sharing their lives. This study used content analysis methods to explore how primary caregivers share information about their children's lives in ways that may compromise their privacy or safety. Fifty public Instagram posts were randomly selected and coded for several aspects of a …

Re-Imagining Teacher Education As An Andragogy Of Hope, Ivon Prefontaine Apr 2023

Re-Imagining Teacher Education As An Andragogy Of Hope, Ivon Prefontaine

International Conference on Hate Studies

Building on a co-authored book chapter, A Futures Perspective for an Andragogy of Hope, I propose to explore the role teachers can play in opening up hopeful pedagogical spaces for K-12 students. In the chapter, we describe a pedagogic/andragogic creed that includes “I am a teacher full of the spirit of hope, in spite of all that stands to the contrary. I am a teacher who refuses the disillusionment that consumes and immobilizes” (Freire, 2014, p. 94). This echoes my opening words which included the following from the Prayer of St. Francis: “where there is despair [let me sow] hope.” …

Vigilantism And Hate Motivated Mob Lynching Cases In India, Sumant Kumar Apr 2023

Vigilantism And Hate Motivated Mob Lynching Cases In India, Sumant Kumar

International Conference on Hate Studies

Vigilantism is not a new concept; it is a reflection of the platitude and failure of the state in which state always blames their own people for taking law into their hands, and by citizens, who justify their measures on state inactiveness. Vigilantism defines as “the act of taking the law into one’s own hands and attempting to enact justice according to one’s own understanding of right and wrong”. Incidents of mob lynching are encouraged within the atmosphere of hate, rumors and distrust created through continued propaganda. There are several incidents on murder, attempt to murder, harassment, assault, gang-rape etc. …

The Proud Boys Raging Righteously At The U.S. Capitol On January 6th, 2021: A Hate Group In Action, Daniel Rothbart Apr 2023

The Proud Boys Raging Righteously At The U.S. Capitol On January 6th, 2021: A Hate Group In Action, Daniel Rothbart

International Conference on Hate Studies

Righteous rage constitutes an expression of political power for many hate groups operating currently in the United States, enticing them toward emotionally charged aggression against their adversaries. We offer a case study of one such group—the Proud Boys—in the context of their violent attack of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Rather than a momentary feeling, their righteous rage is a potent force for forming, defining, and organizing their mission to overpower their adversaries. In particular, their righteous rage is defined by (a) behavioral manifestations, (b) the emotional contagious impact of such manifestations, and (c) the centrality of raging …

Ethno-Political Tribalism As A Cause Factor Of Inequality And Hate (Case Of The Central Asian Countries), Temirkhan Mukhambetov Apr 2023

Ethno-Political Tribalism As A Cause Factor Of Inequality And Hate (Case Of The Central Asian Countries), Temirkhan Mukhambetov

International Conference on Hate Studies

The causes of conflicts that occur in different countries of the world are often indicated by the human instinct of tribalism. The article is devoted to the study, analysis and search for ways to solve the problems of ethnopolitical tribalism.

The main features of a tribal society are tribal strife, hostility towards other sub-ethnic groups. The ethno-political tribalism that often forms in such a society is one of the most dangerous phenomena, since the representatives of the dominant tribe who have seized power use the power of power to suppress competing tribes. As a result, instead of forming a national …

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Pharmacotherapy for stress-related psychological disorders remains inadequate. Patients who are treated with conventional pharmacological agents frequently report negligeable symptom reduction, and, in most cases, less than 50% experience full remission. Clearly, there is a need for additional pharmaceutical research into both established and novel approaches to alleviate these conditions. Over the past several years, there has been a renewed interest in the use of psychedelics to aid in the treatment of psychological disorders. Several studies have reported promising results in patients with major depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following treatment with psychedelic agents such as lysergic acid …

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Most research examining the impact of stress on learning and memory has exposed participants to a stressor and measured how it affects learning and memory for unrelated material (e.g., list of words). Such work has been helpful, but it has not been the most translational to the human condition. When considering phenomena such as intrusive memories in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or an eyewitness's memory for a crime, it is most useful to know what an individual remembers about the stress experience itself, not unrelated information. In prior work, investigators used a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test …

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Many researchers approach the etiology of trauma-, stressor-, and anxiety-related mental disorders from the perspective of classical conditioning processes gone awry. According to this view, abnormal associative relationships between conditioned and unconditioned stimuli may underlie pathological anxiety and result in unusually intense fear memories or fear memories that cannot be properly extinguished. Recent work has expanded on this view by showing that many psychological disorders involving pathological anxiety are associated with an exaggerated form of stimulus generalization, leading individuals with such disorders to respond with fear and anxiety to a variety of contexts and cues that should not be threatening. …

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Given the recently renewed interest in using psychedelics to aid in the treatment of psychological disorders, we aimed to examine the impact of psilocybin, a 5-HT2A agonist, on learning and memory in rodents. Previous work has demonstrated that psilocybin and other 5-HT2A agonists can enhance fear conditioning, fear extinction, and novel object recognition (NOR). Thus, we predicted that low doses of psilocybin would enhance inhibitory avoidance (IA) and NOR memory. In the first experiment, adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent step-through IA training (involving 0.45, 0.65, or 1 mA scrambled footshock) and were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with …

Believe It Or Not: Discovering The Role Of Marketplace Ministry In Reconciling Race And Religion In The African American Church, Shawn Burgs

DMin Project Theses

This Doctor of Ministry Project explores the experiences of African Americans as faith holders in the crux of race, religion, and marketplace and how the interconnectedness of these facets can lend to reconciliation. The purpose of exploring how African American believers experience race and religious reconciliation is a noble goal that seeks to address the challenges faced by many African American believers in navigating their faith and cultural engagement. By examining their experiences, insights, and perspectives, we can learn more about the unique challenges they face and the strategies they employ to overcome them. This information can help us develop …

Objectives: Information professionals have supported medical providers, administrators and decision-makers, and guideline creators in the COVID-19 response. Searching COVID-19 literature presented new challenges, including the volume and heterogeneity of literature and the proliferation of new information sources, and exposed existing issues in metadata and publishing. An expert panel developed best practices, including recommendations, elaborations, and examples, for searching during public health emergencies.

Methods: Project directors and advisors developed core elements from experience and literature. Experts, identified by affiliation with evidence synthesis groups, COVID-19 search experience, and nomination, responded to an online survey to reach consensus on core elements. Expert participants …

Health & Humility By Proxy: Examining Medical Companions’ Perspective On Physician Humility, Brianna Williamson Apr 2023

Health & Humility By Proxy: Examining Medical Companions’ Perspective On Physician Humility, Brianna Williamson

Student Research Symposium 2023

Humility has been assessed from numerous angles in psychology. Previous research has examined physician humility and its relevance to quality of care and doctor-patient relationships. In the past, humility—as defined by the patient perspective—has been shown to increase patient trust, overall health outcome, and other positive factors. In the current study, we will explore humility from the perspective of medical companions (someone who accompanies the
patient to their doctor's visit). Using an online study, 304 participants were asked to rate physician humility and list exemplary behaviors seen at their most recent visit. Patients usually have established rapport with their medical …

Exploring The Association Between Humility And Self-Compassion, Analise Espinoza Apr 2023

Exploring The Association Between Humility And Self-Compassion, Analise Espinoza

Student Research Symposium 2023

Humility is virtue that allows one to pursue life with limited pride or arrogance. Humble people tend to view themselves accurately, and tend to be aware and appreciate their strengths and weaknesses. We wondered whether humble people would be more self-compassionate. Self-compassionate people are more likely to treat themselves with kindness, and mindfulness, especially when faced with adverse events. As such, it would make sense that humble people, who have the ability to assess their own faults and gifts, can extend themselves grace and kindness in the face of adversity. To test this association, we asked participants to complete an …

Predictors Of Stress In Minority Students: The Relative Importance Of Optimism Vs Resilience, Rashelle Sanchez, Ho Phi Huynh Apr 2023

Predictors Of Stress In Minority Students: The Relative Importance Of Optimism Vs Resilience, Rashelle Sanchez, Ho Phi Huynh

Student Research Symposium 2023

Many college students experience stress; optimism and resilience may help students cope with it. Optimism is a person’s positive outlook on their circumstances and their future, whereas resilience is a persons ability to adapt and
overcome challenges throughout their life. In this study, we compared the two to see which one would be a better predictor of stress. First year students (N =355) at a public regional university completed an online study that measure their perceive stress, optimism, and resilience. Bivariate correlations showed that resilience and optimism were both negatively correlated with all four sub-scales of students stress. Linear regression …

Intellectual Limitations And Doctor’S Orders: Examining The Relationship Between Intellectual Humility And Adherence To Medical Advice, Briella A. Nava, Caitlin Weldon, Ho Phi Huynh Apr 2023

Intellectual Limitations And Doctor’S Orders: Examining The Relationship Between Intellectual Humility And Adherence To Medical Advice, Briella A. Nava, Caitlin Weldon, Ho Phi Huynh

Student Research Symposium 2023

Nonadherence to medical advice poses a threat to patients, providers, and the health care system. Intellectual humility reflects one’s ability to recognize their intellectual limitations through the components of independence of intellect
and ego, openness to revising one’s viewpoint, respect for other’s viewpoints, and lack of intellectual overconfidence. Possessing more intellectual humility may help improve the way people interact with medical information, thereby increasing their understanding of medical conditions and necessary treatment. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between intellectual humility and adherence by having participants (N = 196) complete the Comprehensive Intellectual Humility Scale and the General Medication Adherence Scale. …

Examining The Association Between Awareness And Acceptance Of Impermanence And Humility, Caitlin Weldon, Briella A. Nava, Ho Phi Huynh

Student Research Symposium 2023

People who appreciate their smallness compared to the vastness of the world can detach themselves from their egos and become humble. We argue that humility is not only about the relative size of the ego, but also about the relative
time in which the ego exists. The current study examined the relationship between awareness and acceptance of the fleeting nature of time (impermanence) and humility. We collected data from 257 adults residing in the United States
through an online study. Participants completed a measure of impermanence and measures of humility. Bivariate correlations suggested that there were significant positive correlations between …

The Importance Of The United Nations Peacekeeping Operations: A Study On Mali, The Democratic Republic Of Congo, And South Sudan, Tess Whitehurst

Honors Theses

This thesis presents the history of UN peacekeeping and how it has evolved over time to create more effective solutions to peacebuilding. This is done by providing a comparison of the backgrounds of three different peacekeeping missions, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), and the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), with a historical and demographical background on the host country in order to demonstrate the importance of peacekeeping on that country. Through critical research of peer reviewed sources and contextual information from …
