Student Pages - Taking Action For Environmental Sustainability – The Story Of Columbia’S Recicladores, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 08: Urban Environmental Action
In this activity you read about the scavenger families in South America who make their living recycling the city’s trash. Known in the local settings as Recicladores, these families struggle to survive in a world where they are terribly mistreated and considered sub-human by many of the wealthier city residents. These are the same residents who actually depend on the recicladores to have their trash recycled. Consider how these people have been able to help themselves through organizing and working together to better their lives and the conditions in their neighborhoods. In addition, you will use the examples from the …

Lesson Plan: Trees In My City, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 08: Urban Environmental Action
Students have seen how people can actively work to improve the environment. Students will determine current tree / green coverage and why this information is important when planning for change. Students will learn the impacts trees can have on cities and will use understanding to identify tree species and plan future tree plantings in following lessons.

Lesson Plan: Selecting And Synthesizing, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 08: Urban Environmental Action
In this lesson, students examine all of the action plans they have created in the previous seven modules. They will analyze the goals and locations of those plans and look for common themes. Students will agree upon a new idea for an action plan that synthesizes the work they have already done, and reflects the scientific concepts they have learned over the course. As a class, you will create a new action plan that can realistically be implemented.

Module 08: Urban Environmental Action
In this lesson, students will consider the benefits and trade-offs of their action plans over an extended period of time. Students will consider and discuss a quote attributed to the Great Law of the Iroquois and predict and complete a timeline of the benefits and tradeoffs of their action plan for ecological communities (human and non-human) seven “generations” into the future. This lesson allows you and your students to consider the future impact of their action plans, and allows your students to consider making any modifications to their action plans.

Module 08: Urban Environmental Action
In this lesson students will complete the class action plan that they have been developing and revising throughout the module. Students will carry out each step of the action plan to meet their specific goal to improve their field site/school/community. Students will reflect on their experience and think about continuing these ideas outside of science class.

Lesson Plan: Introducing Biodiversity, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
This lesson is designed to elicit student preconceptions about biodiversity and introduce the concept of biodiversity through discussions, reading, and comparing photographs. The first activity students come up with a definition for biodiversity. Then they will evaluate the biodiversity at three different locations along a transect. For the last activity in this lesson, students will read a narrative that explains the science of biodiversity, and clarifies terms and concepts used in the first part of this lesson.

Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The goal of this lesson is to introduce students to different methods of calculating biodiversity and to consider how different biodiversity indices are sensitive to species richness and species evenness. This lesson builds off of the previous lesson where students brainstormed different ways of determining biodiversity. The first activity engages students in developing a way to evaluate which cell-phone plan is best. The goal of the first activity of this lesson is to help students to understand that there are multiple ways to measure something. The second activity introduces four measures of biodiversity (species richness, species evenness, Simpson’s Index and …

Lesson Plan: Setting Up The Biodiversity Investigation, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is to connect the issues around biodiversity to the students’ field site. The lesson starts with a class discussion where students talk about what they believe the bird biodiversity is at their field site, and whether or not they believe it is likely to be higher in some areas compared to others. Then in groups students develop the research question they will be investigating in this module as well as their predictions for that research question. Students will return to this investigation four times during the module to collect data and then to analyze the …

Lesson Plan: Identifying Birds, Center For Urban Resilience
Lesson Plan: Identifying Birds, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize students with taxonomy and basic birding skills, including using binoculars, navigating field guides and identifying birds. The lesson begins with a discussion of taxonomy and the importance of naming or identifying birds. The students are introduced to both the binoculars and field guides before they go outside to conduct a bird binocular race. During the binocular race, students use binoculars and field guides to identify pictures of birds on laminated cards. If time permits, students can practice their skills on a bird walk around the schoolyard. They will use these birding skills …

Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is for students to begin collecting observations in order to answer their research question as part of their field investigation and to inform their action plan. The lesson begins with a review of how to identify birds with the students identifying four birds shown in a PowerPoint. In their groups, students discuss their data collection protocol before they head outside. Students go outside to collect their first set of bird biodiversity data. The reflection question for today focuses on whether students need to revise or refine their methodologies in order to collect appropriate data for …
