Module 02: Land Use
The purpose of this lesson is for students to explore urban sprawl. They will first analyze urban growth patterns at the national level and then compare the density changes associated with various urban areas in the United States. Finally, they will research information about their own metropolitan area to conclude if it is currently contributing to urban sprawl and suggest how land use policies may have contributed to its current state.

Module 02: Land Use
Students will then consider a case study of a city that is planning for decreasing density. The ecological services model will be used to better understand the city’s approach to land use policies. Students will explore habitat fragmentation in order to explore different factors that influence species survival.

Module 02: Land Use
In this lesson, students will use their knowledge about urban land use that they have learned throughout the module to contribute to the action plan for their field site that focuses on urban land use. Students will also explore the importance of presenting information to diverse audiences. After contributing to their action plans, students will present the changes and updates they made to their plan to the class and the class will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the different plans.

Lesson Plan - Garbage And The Impact Of Scale, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 04: Hazardous Waste
The main purpose of this lesson is to introduce garbage by way of exploring the concept of scale. The lesson begins by having students define garbage. Students will then think about their own garbage production. Their individual production will then be used to estimate garbage production at different spatial scales. In an optional activity, students can also explore how garbage and its management have changed over time.
