Lesson Plan - Public Health Action Plan, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality
The purpose of this lesson is to revisit the driving question introduced in lesson 1 of this module: How can I make my neighborhood a healthier place to live? Students synthesize what they have learned across the module - that healthy neighborhoods have green space, robust social networks, effective waste delivery and waste removal, clean air and healthy foods. They use this general information to analyze a proposed exercise path. Students work in groups to address the action plan topic for this module: resources, both social and material. For this action plan, there is a specific focus on discussing resources …

Mapping Renewal: How An Unexpected Interdisciplinary Collaboration Transformed A Digital Humanities Project, Elise Tanner, Geoffrey Joseph
Mapping Renewal: How An Unexpected Interdisciplinary Collaboration Transformed A Digital Humanities Project, Elise Tanner, Geoffrey Joseph
Digital Initiatives Symposium
Funded by a National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources Foundations Grant, the UA Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture’s “Mapping Renewal” pilot project focused on creating access to and providing spatial context to archival materials related to racial segregation and urban renewal in the city of Little Rock, Arkansas, from 1954-1989. An unplanned interdisciplinary collaboration with the UA Little Rock Arkansas Economic Development Institute (AEDI) has proven to be an invaluable partnership. One team member from each department will demonstrate the Mapping Renewal website and discuss how the collaborative process has changed and shaped …

The Power Of Information: Information, Leak Notices, And Water Conservation In Edina, Mn, Federico Chung
Economics Honors Projects
This paper provides evidence on the effects of information provision on households’ water use. I use quarterly household consumption data from a utility in Minnesota to test the effect of a new residential water billing system on households’ water consumption. The updated billing format was possible as the utility transitioned to an automated meter reading (AMR) system. I also study impacts of another source of improved information provision from AMR adoption, faster high-water consumption notices. I find mixed evidence of the impact of personalized information on households’ water use. Households respond to high-consumption notices by significantly reducing consumption, even relative …
Fish Disease Outreach Messages: Testing Of Gain And Loss Frames, Erin L. Pavloski, Heather A. Triezenberg
Fish Disease Outreach Messages: Testing Of Gain And Loss Frames, Erin L. Pavloski, Heather A. Triezenberg
The Journal of Extension
Gain and loss framing has been used as a technique in risk communication to shape individuals’ behaviors in many fields. Our community-engaged research, conducted in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), experimentally tested five message frames to determine efficacy for outreach programs. We found: a) to increase risk perceptions of fish disease use a loss frame in a management context, b) to decrease risk perceptions of fish disease management use a gain frame in a disease context, and c) to motivate behavioral intentions for prevention and risk reduction use a gain frame in a disease context.

You’ve been there before. You thought you could trust someone with a secret. You thought it would be safe, but found out later that they blabbed to everyone. Or maybe they didn’t share it, but the way they used it felt manipulative. You gave more than you got and it didn’t feel fair. But now that it’s out there, do you even have control anymore?
Ok. Now imagine that person was your supermarket. Or your bank. Or your boss.
As designers of digital spaces for consumer products and services, how often do we consider the relationship we have with our …
Effectiveness Of Plastic Ordinances In Santa Monica, Ca: Do Regulations At The Municipal Level Reduce Plastic Waste?, John W. Hayes
Effectiveness Of Plastic Ordinances In Santa Monica, Ca: Do Regulations At The Municipal Level Reduce Plastic Waste?, John W. Hayes
School of Public Policy Capstones
Plastic is a cheap, robust and versatile material with numerous practical uses that contribute to the convenience of modern day life. However the very same properties that make it uniquely diverse and hardy also contribute to the hazards it poses to the ecosystems and human health. If current consumption and manufacturing practices remain unchanged, there will be hundreds of millions of additional tons of plastic introduced into the environment over the coming decades. To mitigate this issue, some cities, such as Santa Monica, have implemented ordinances and policies directly aimed at this growing problem, albeit with ambiguous results. To better …
201— Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Within The Department Of Geological Sciences At Suny Geneseo, Maria Leonard
201— Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Within The Department Of Geological Sciences At Suny Geneseo, Maria Leonard
GREAT Day Posters
The field of Geosciences historically has lacked diversity. This lack of diversity is observed at all levels of higher education—for example, 90% of doctoral degrees are awarded to white people (Wilson, 2016) and only 3.8% of tenured or tenure track positions at the top 100 geoscience departments are held by faculty of color (Bernard & Cooperdock 2018). There are multiple reasons at the heart of this issue including the lack of representation which can fuel stereotype threats and imposter syndromes.
This project aimed to take actions that would help grow the diversity, equity, and accessibility within Geneseo’s GSCI department. This …
The Experiences Of Black Women Pursuing Advanced Degrees In Stem, Denaja Haygood
The Experiences Of Black Women Pursuing Advanced Degrees In Stem, Denaja Haygood
Honors Projects
Black women are severely underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. While the underrepresentation of professional Black women in STEM has been well-researched, the pipeline problem of the education of Black women in STEM has been overlooked. The number of Black women pursuing STEM degrees dramatically decreases as the level of education increases. This gap in the literature is problematic, because Black women are still severely underrepresented in STEM-focused advanced degree programs. A small but growing literature indicates that Black women tend to experience frequent forms of discrimination, feelings of isolation and less satisfaction with their graduate programs, …

Lesson Plan - Land Use Game: Complex Decisions, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 02: Land Use
The purpose of this lesson is for students to simulate decisions that may influence land use patterns in a city. To do this, the students will play a board game that has both mandated Policy Event cards and decision cards that students control. The decision cards consist of three potential options and each option has different monetary, ecological, and social consequences. The students play the game in groups of two to three and then discuss the impacts of their decisions on the future of their city. The lesson concludes with a discussion of how well the data collection went and …

Lesson Plan - Biophysical And Social Drivers, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 02: Land Use
In this lesson, students will learn about the various biophysical and social drivers which impact land use in detail. They will then use their knowledge about urban land use as a class to explore various data sources (maps, charts, figures, etc.) to determine how these drivers have influenced land use in New Orleans. Students will then relate their understanding of the case study to the Ecological Services Model.
