Neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the language system are discussed. A discussion on the applicability of certain biological premises to the language system.
The Relationship Between Linguistic Behavior And Diagnostic Classifications In The Language Processing Systems Of Bilingual Schizophrenics, Lee Sue Curry
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Both of these theoretical positions - the linguistics and the behavioristic - are introduced here as parallel structures within which a study of language can proceed. As this study is developed, each strand is evident to some extent, with a synthesis of the two evolving in a psycholinguistic model which characterizes actual language use. This model, with the addiction of a bilingual dimension, is then discussed in light of schizophrenic language deviations.

Comparison Of American And Chinese College Students By Means Of The Holtzman Inkblot Technique, Te Jung Chang
Masters Theses
The major purpose of this study was to explore personality differences between American and Chinese college students.
Sixteen American college students and two groups of the same number of their Chinese counterparts, one of the Chinese student groups being in the United States for less than one year and the other group being in the United States for longer than two years, were randomly selected and matched by ages to be the subjects of this study.
The Holtzman Inkblot Technique (HIT) was administered to all forty-eight subjects by the author and the HIT protocols were scored by two different scorers …
Differential Conditioning And Stimulus Intensity, Bruce A. Kushner
Differential Conditioning And Stimulus Intensity, Bruce A. Kushner
Psychology ETDs
The present experiments sought to investigate the effects of intensity of the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) on differential conditioning. The first experiment was an attempt to replicate the Spence, Haggard, and Ross (1958b) study in which one group of subjects (Ss) received, on a random half of the trials, a light conditioned stimulus (CS) paired with a high intensity UCS, while on the other half of the trials, a tone CS was paired with a weak UCS. Another group received the reverse pairing arrangements. Spence, Haggard, and Ross found higher levels of conditioning exhibited by the CSs paired with the higher …

Fifty‐Four Voices From Two: The Effects Of Simultaneous Manipulations Of Rate, Mean Fundamental Frequency, And Variance Of Fundamental Frequency On Ratings Of Personality From Speech, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Faculty Publications
Utterances of two adults males were analyzed and synthesized by a fast Fourier Transforms method. Each of the two voices was synthesized in each of the twenty‐seven combinations of three levels each of rate, mean FØ, and variance of FØ (a total of fifty‐four “voices” generated from two). The effects of the rate, mean FØ, and variance of FØ manipulations, the interactive effects of rate and variance of FØ, and the effects due to speaker were all statistically significant predictors of personality ratings given the voices. They accounted for 86%, 4%, 3%, 2%, and I% of the …

Perceptions Of Personality From Speech: Effects Of Manipulations Of Acoustical Parameters, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Faculty Publications
A speech analysis-synthesis system was used to manipulate variance of fundamental frequency and a mechanical rate changer was used to manipulate speech rate. The synthesized and altered voices were tested for realism. Synthesized voices were mistaken for normal 50% to 58% of the time and rate-changed voices were mistaken for normal 78% of the time. Additional studies were conducted to test the effects of these acoustical manipulations on the adjective ratings judges made of speakers. Variance of intonation was increased and decreased by 50% for eight speakers. There was a significantrend for increased intonation to cause voices to be rated …
The Personality Of Psychology Majors As Measured By The Mmpi, Bill W. Garmon
The Personality Of Psychology Majors As Measured By The Mmpi, Bill W. Garmon
Masters Theses
This study sought to investigate the personality traits of psychology students. No significant differences were found between a group of psychology majors and a control group on any of the scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.
The findings do show that college students, as a group, are more deviant in their responses on the MMPI than the general adult population.
The subjects were 80 students enrolled in seven psychology classes at Eastern Illinois University.
The t ratio was used for evaluating the difference between means for each scale.

Efficacy Of Reinforcement In An Observational Paradigm, Charles M. Krizic
Efficacy Of Reinforcement In An Observational Paradigm, Charles M. Krizic
Masters Theses
Study investigated the effectiveness of reinforcement in an observational paradigm where the dependent variable was indicated by increased morphological resemblance of an observer (O) after viewing a model (M). The stimulus was a series of novel responses recorded on videotape with each child viewing the tape individually. The subjects were 32 Head Start males divided into four groups. The first group was administered verbal praise prior to the modeling session. The second served as the vicarious reinforcement condition and observed an adult praise the model. The third group received direct reinforcement during the test for acquisition. The control group received …
Titration Of Intertrial Interval In The Matching-To-Sample Paradigm, Gregory T. Hochstetter
Titration Of Intertrial Interval In The Matching-To-Sample Paradigm, Gregory T. Hochstetter
Masters Theses
Investigators have used many different values for the ITI in investigating the variables in matching-to-sample. Holt and Shafer (1973), showed that the ITI itself influences matching performance. In the present experiment the titration method was employed to determine the optimal or "preferred" ITI for pigeons. Three Ss began each session with an ITI of 0 sec. Three other Ss began each session with an ITI of 60 sec. During the session two consecutive correct responses reduced the ITI by 2 secs while a single error would increase the ITI by 2 secs. The results showed that the 60 sec ITI …

A Comparison Of Incarcerated And Non-Incarcerated Women Based On The M.M.P.I., Rose Marie Carter
A Comparison Of Incarcerated And Non-Incarcerated Women Based On The M.M.P.I., Rose Marie Carter
Masters Theses
The field for research on women offenders provides an extensive opportunity for scientific investigation. Many writers (Gibbons, 1971; Cunningham, 1964; Sutherland, 1968) have discussed the causes of crime and their resulting social implications. Organized mass presentations of the movement of crime among women is negligible. Today female incarcerates make up approximately 11 per cent (Lerner, 1972) of the total number in state and federal penitentiaries. Previous research (Cunningham, 1964) on female felons found poor self-concept, excessive dependency and pathological emotionality to be a consistent pattern in women criminals. Other research (Apfeldorf, 1971; Guze, 1959) found criminal and non-criminal groups could …
Effect Of Spatial Titration On Task Performance, Lawrence M. Glowacki
Effect Of Spatial Titration On Task Performance, Lawrence M. Glowacki
Masters Theses
A spatial titration method was used with a reinforcement schedule to determine task-reinforcement area separation most preferred and effective in producing high task performance. Two third-grade boys were given task contingent reinforcement where the task was solving arithmetic problems. Following shaping to stable response rates, the titration operation was introduced. Errors decreased the task-reinforcement area distance while correct responses increased the distance. With the introduction of Titration Phase 1, both subjects' incorrect responses produced a zero task-reinforcement area separation. In Titration Phase 2, both subjects were started at the opposite extreme of the reinforcement continuum. Repeated errors produced a zero …
Auditory Attentional Deficit In Schizophrenia, Esther Ann Gimpel
Auditory Attentional Deficit In Schizophrenia, Esther Ann Gimpel
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Differences in auditory detection performance between schizophrenics and normals were examined in terms of the attentional processes involved. Each of 40 ~s (20 schizophrenics categorized along the dimensions of paranoia, premorbidity, and acuteness; and 20 hospital technical staff) were presented with 30 50-trial blocks of a tone detection task using 6 auditory ensembles consisting of 2 tones apiece separated by varying . ,. frequency bands. Tones were masked by white noise and presented in a free-running trial manner. The commonly found decrement in detection performance with normal subjects as the tones in the ensembles become more widely separated was replicated. …
The Effects Of Blindness On Tactile And Auditory Perception In Rats, James Malcolm Claiborn
The Effects Of Blindness On Tactile And Auditory Perception In Rats, James Malcolm Claiborn
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Folklore has long held that blind people gain, relative to normal people, in their sensitivity to other sensory modalities. Although supported only by equivocal evidence, this position probably first appeared in mythology in early Greek literature. Oedipus Rex was attributed greater awareness of people’s nature after this blindness. It is still a prevalent myth in contemporary American culture, to the extent that it appears in “Little Orphan Annie.” Experimental attempts at verification of this point began several years ago, but it remains a controversial issue. Literature on the topic can be divided up into several content areas: the relevance of …

Verbal Reward & Punishment & Need For Approval In Schizophrenics, Chester Gay Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The current study was designed to further examine the effects of verbal reward and punishment on task performance of schizophrenics. The relationship of need for approval of schizophrenics (as measured by the M-C SDS) to performance and to reward and punishment was also examined. Verbal reward and punishment along with need for approval served as independent variables. Task performance was the dependent variable. The following major questions were asked:
- Does verbal reward and punishment significantly influence performance of schizophrenics?
- How is the personality construct, need for approval, related to performance of tasks by schizophrenics?
- Is there a significant interaction between …

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

A Follow-Up Attitudinal Study Of Selected Groups In The City Of The Dalles Toward The Community Attention Home, Landon Gilstrap, Joyce Larson, Janice Page
Dissertations and Theses
Prior to the opening of the Attention Home in August of 1971, a survey was conducted by David Clitheroe and Garrett Long to determine what specific attitudes local groups in the community had about the Attention Home. Their study represented the first part of a two part study. It established the baseline data on the community attitudes toward the Attention Home prior to the opening of the home. These attitudes will be compared with the attitudes after one year's operation of the home in order to assess what attitudinal changes, if any, have taken place between the first and second …
