Color Perception In Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels, Robert F. Cooley
Color Perception In Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels, Robert F. Cooley
Dissertations and Theses
Squirrels appear to be unique among sub-primate mammals in being able to see at least some colors. A readily available Oregon squirrel species, golden mantled ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis), which has not previously been tested under laboratory conditions for color vision, was subjected to color discrimination testing in a Skinner box. On the basis of recent physiological tests of color reception capacity and behavioral tests of color discrimination response in closely related species, it was predicted that this species should be able to discriminate blue, green and possibly yellow, but not red. Three experiments were conducted. The first, a pilot …
A Descriptive Follow-Up Study Of 21 Children From Parry Center, Paul Duke
A Descriptive Follow-Up Study Of 21 Children From Parry Center, Paul Duke
Dissertations and Theses
The age-old question persists: Does an agency operated treatment program contribute significantly to a child’s personal development and adjustment following release from the institution? Since it is the agency's responsibility to weigh the needs of the disturbed child and provide appropriate services according to those needs, their basic question--whether residential treatment or another mode of treatment is more effective--remains unanswered and, in many instances, uncontested. If residential child care benefits the disturbed child, which characteristics of that agency are conducive to the improvement of the child's behavior and re-adaption? The following study will attempt to isolate such characteristics. We will …
Hope: A General Meaning Analysis, Peter L. Lavalley
Hope: A General Meaning Analysis, Peter L. Lavalley
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Talk of hope and the future is in the air and very much a part of the world of twentieth-century man. At the same time there is the awareness that the actions of men today often belie the expression of their hopes for a better way of life. The resolution of this conflict is no simple matter, but may be assisted through a more complete understanding of the meaning of human hope. It may then be possible to translate that meaning into individual, social, and national realities. This paper will attend primarily to the former question—that of attaining a fuller …
Behavioral Manifestations Of Women Who Have A Liberated Or Traditionalist View Toward Their Role In Contemporary Society, Shirley A. Clark
Behavioral Manifestations Of Women Who Have A Liberated Or Traditionalist View Toward Their Role In Contemporary Society, Shirley A. Clark
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The purpose of this study was two-fold. Part one was to develop an attitude questionnaire which could be used to discriminate between women with a traditionalist or liberated attitude toward toward their role in society. Part two was to choose Ss on the basis of their responses to the questionnaire and find behavioral manifestations of these attitudes. The assumption was made that the underlying difference between the two attitudes was the acceptance or rejection of male superiority.
Eight groups of female Ss, 4 traditionalist and 4 liberated, participated in a physiological experiment in which their systolic blood pressure responses following …
Evaluating Human Resources In Commercial Loan Analysis, Coy Darrell Jones
Evaluating Human Resources In Commercial Loan Analysis, Coy Darrell Jones
Theses and Dissertations
A significant problem in analyzing bank loan requests exists because of difficulty in evaluating the human component in a firm’s resource structure. This research investigates a new accounting technique, human resource accounting, and identifies certain specific personality traits for correlation to a successful loan relationship. These techniques, coupled with the use of a suggested model for scoring personality tests of loan applicants, should enable a better analysis of bank loan risks.
Psychological tests were employed to measure certain personality traits of selected successful loan customers. One test used, the FIRO-B, provides indicators of certain “expressed” behavior traits and of certain …
The Effects Of Frontal And Septal Ablation On Response Regulation In The Cat, Robert Numan
The Effects Of Frontal And Septal Ablation On Response Regulation In The Cat, Robert Numan
Doctoral Dissertations
The literature dealing with the behavioral effects produced by ablation of the septum, frontal cortical areas and the hippocampus is reviewed. It is concluded that the medial septum, the dorsolateral frontal cortex (and its analogue in lower forms e.g., gyrus proreus in the cat and precollosal midline cortex in the rat) and the dorsal hippocampus form a nodal point within a larger neuronal system that is involved in response regulation.
A model, describing the response regulatory processes mediated by this fronto-cortical-limbic system is proposed, Motor programs are written in the frontal cortex and temoorarily stored in hippocampal area CA3 …

Investigation Of The Relationship Between Children's Language And Teacher-Pupil Interaction, Jerry James Wellik
Culminating Projects in Teacher Development
PROBLEM: It was the purpose of this study to determine the effect of pupil language as measured by the auditory reception and grammatic closure subtests of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities and indirectly by maternal education level on teacher interaction style in dyadic contacts with children.
PROCEDURE: Twenty-one -children age seven through ten were administered the auditory reception and grammatic closure subtests of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities. Maternal education was ascertained from the children's cumulative records. Teacher-pupil interaction for three hours of class time for each child was recorded according to the Flanders' Interaction Analysis Category System. …
The Development Of Social Interaction, Play, And Metacommunication In Mammals: An Ethological Perspective, Marc Bekoff
The Development Of Social Interaction, Play, And Metacommunication In Mammals: An Ethological Perspective, Marc Bekoff
Ethology Collection
Analysis of the dynamics of the ontogeny of social interaction is of critical importance in order that behavioral development may be comprehended in its own right, and the relationship between infant and adult behavior understood. In this review, general concepts of behavioral development in mammals are discussed and analyzed, and the many variables that are involved are considered. When it is impossible to control or observe the social interaction of the developing organism in its natural environment, captive subjects should be used. There is increasing evidence that results obtained with the latter are related to social organization observed in the …

Anxiety And Body Image In Tattooed And Nontattooed Military Prisoners, Terry L. Habeger
Anxiety And Body Image In Tattooed And Nontattooed Military Prisoners, Terry L. Habeger
Student Work
Tattooing has evolved into something less than an art, particularity in western cultures, and has lost its original dignity and original significance as well (Abramson,1931). As a result, there has been a great deal of conjecture concerning the psychodynaraics of tattooing (Edgerton & Dingman,1963; Hamburger,1966; Hamburger & Lacovara,1963). The present study was an attempt to investigate the psychodynamics of tattooing through the use of one measure of anxiety and two measures of body image with tattooed and nontattooed individuals. The techniques employed were the Secord (1953) Homonym Word Association Test, the Secord-Jourard (1953) Body Cathexis Scale, and the Taylor (1953) …

A Concept Learning Model, Charles R. Sawyer
A Concept Learning Model, Charles R. Sawyer
Psychology ETDs
An analysis of rule learning (RL) data suggests that an important factor in bidimensional concept learning is the degree to which stimuli share common stimulus values. Subjects have the most difficulty with differentially assigned stimuli which have common values and with stimuli which are assigned to the same response category but have no common values. Based on these findings, an experiment was run with four bidimensional stimuli to determine how Ss will respond to non-reinforced test stimuli after the reinforcement of one or two stimuli to the same or different response categories. The data indicated that Ss responded to a …
Changes In Peer Conformity Across Age On Normative And Informational Tasks, Susan C. Wright
Changes In Peer Conformity Across Age On Normative And Informational Tasks, Susan C. Wright
Student Work
The influence of adult and peer models on Ss from grades 2, 5, 8, and 11 was measured on informational and normative tasks. Social influence was produced by presenting televised adult and peer model answers after each informational (dot discrepancy) and normative (art pictures) problem. The predictions that peer conformity would be positively related to age, and that peers would be more influential on normative tasks were not supported (p ˂ .05). While similar levels of peer conformity occurred for males and females on informational tasks, males conformed significantly more to peers on normative tasks than females. In addition, conformity …
Neural Correlates Of Cardiac Orienting Response Habituation, Judith Craig Sanwald
Neural Correlates Of Cardiac Orienting Response Habituation, Judith Craig Sanwald
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This study represents an attempt to determine some of the neural correlates of habituation to repetitive auditory stimulation, and to relate those correlates to the existing theories concerning habituation mechanisms. As the following literature review will reveal, a well controlled correlational study dealing with habituation to auditory stimulation is needed.
Social Desirability And The Interpersonal Check List, Deborah Jean Wheeler
Social Desirability And The Interpersonal Check List, Deborah Jean Wheeler
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether number of responses is related to the social desirability and intensity of the test items. 61 Ss were administered the Interpersonal Check List and the Marlowe Crowne Social Desirability Scale. From the Interpersonal Check List number of responses, average item intensity and average item social desirability were calculated. Average item social desirability was calculated from individual item social desirability values obtained from ratings by another, similar S group. The results showed that number of responses is negatively correlated with average item social desirability and positively correlated with average item intensity, as …
The Relative Usefulness Of Exemplars And Non-Exemplars For Solving Attribute Identification Concept Tasks, Thomas C. Toppino
The Relative Usefulness Of Exemplars And Non-Exemplars For Solving Attribute Identification Concept Tasks, Thomas C. Toppino
Psychology ETDs
The effects of category label (positiveness or negativeness) and category composition (differences in the stimuli composing each category) were investigated in two experiments with concepts which were previously deemed most likely to yield a persistent advantage to positive instances. Category label effects were separated from category composition effects by using pairs of complementary concepts and requiring Ss to solve with only positive instances or only negative instances. Results showed that category composition was a more important determiner of performance than was category label. The relatively weak category label effects which were obtained were limited to specific conditions of category composition. …

Assessing Some Side Effects Of A Contingency Management Program, Charles M. Atkinson
All Master's Theses
This study applied a contingency management program to a single behavior while measuring multiple behaviors. Reinforcement was made contingent upon increased addition rate. The experimental group made significantly greater gains in addition rate. There was no significant difference in the gains made in subtraction rate, reading rate, reading comprehension, or classroom behavior. The study was limited by a small sample, six week time span, and the use of mentally retarded subjects to assess side effects of reinforcing an academic behavior.
Imitation In Adult-Sibling Dyads, Albert F. Hodapp
Imitation In Adult-Sibling Dyads, Albert F. Hodapp
Student Work
Imitative behavior of a parent-surrogate and a sibling model by second-born children from M1-M2, M1-F2, F1-M2, and F1-F2 dyads was assessed in an observational learning paradigm. Children, five- to seven-years of age from two-child families, observed an adult male or female parent-surrogate model, and an older brother or sister play three games – dart through, gold putt, and ring toss. After observing an assigned adult model and a sibling model, the children played each of the three games and his reproduction of verbal, postural, and motor responses of the models was scored. In general, second-born children imitated the sibling models …
Developmental Changes In Level Of Achievement As A Function Of Magnitude And Direction Of Cue Validity, James M. Spencer
Developmental Changes In Level Of Achievement As A Function Of Magnitude And Direction Of Cue Validity, James M. Spencer
Student Work
Twelve groups of Ss participated in a probability learning task which was derived from Brunswik’s Lens Model. The groups varied according to age (7-8, 13-14, and 19-20 year olds), magnitude (.40 and .80), and the direction (positive and negative) of the ecological validity coefficient (cue-criterion correlation). The Ss were required to predict a two-digit criterion number after viewing a two-digit cue value. An analysis of cue utilization (S's response-cue correlation) and achievement (S’s responsecriterion correlation) revealed that Ss had much more difficulty dealing with cues which have a negative, rather than a positive, relationship with the criterion. Some evidence also …
