Effects Of Four Different Modality Training Programs On Iq And Reading Readiness Performance In The Lower Socio-Economic Level Kindergarten Child, Marilyn Segal Jan 1970

Effects Of Four Different Modality Training Programs On Iq And Reading Readiness Performance In The Lower Socio-Economic Level Kindergarten Child, Marilyn Segal

Theses and Dissertations

Four perceptual training programs were incorporated into an individualized kindergarten curriculum for disadvantaged children. One program stressed general auditory and visual perceptual skills, a second auditory skills specific to decoding, a third visual skills specific to decoding, and a fourth auditory and visual skills specific to decoding. Each of the four treatment groups were taught by the same teachers. Post-tests included IQ, auditory and visual measures of reading readiness, and two learning rate tests, the Murphy-Durrell learning rate test which uses a look-say instructional method, and a parallel learning rate test constructed by the investigator using a linguistic instructional approach. …

The Role Of Interference And Trace Decay In The Retention Of A Simple Psychomotor Task, Stephen David Southall Jan 1970

The Role Of Interference And Trace Decay In The Retention Of A Simple Psychomotor Task, Stephen David Southall

Master's Theses

The purpose of the present study was to try to distinguish between the interference theory and trace decay theory and to try to establish whether one or a combination of the two best accounts for the forgetting shown in motor short-term memory (STM). The experiment was a seven by three factorial design with repeated measures on the second factor. The first factor was number of prior responses which the S experienced on the linear slide apparatus, and the number of responses ranged from zero through six. The second factor, length of the retention interval between practice and recall, had values …

Type Of Instruction, Abstractness, And Mnemonic System, Gordon Wood, Martin Bolt Jan 1970

Type Of Instruction, Abstractness, And Mnemonic System, Gordon Wood, Martin Bolt

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Two experiments were conducted to determine if the effect of manipulating imagery instructions and peg list abstractness depends on whether a paired-associate or one-bun technique is used. It appears that the paired-associate and one-bun techniques yield comparable results regarding the effectiveness of imagery instructions and peg list abstractness.

A Comparative Study Of The Intelligence Quotient Of The Negro, Patricia L. Greene Jan 1970

A Comparative Study Of The Intelligence Quotient Of The Negro, Patricia L. Greene

Honors Theses

Extending beyond health, white supremacists maintain that Negroes are innately less intelligent than Caucasians. In a statement remarkably comparable to those made two centuries ago by advocates of the theory of American degeneration, one modern-day racist phrases the claim in these words:

Any man with two eyes in his head can observe a Negro settlement in the Congo, can study the pure-blood African in his native habitat as he exists when left on his own resources, can compare this settlement with London or Paris, and can draw hos own conclusions regarding relative levels of character and intelligence.... Finally, he can …

Dreams: A Guide To The Subconscious Of Man, Sharon Coe Jan 1970

Dreams: A Guide To The Subconscious Of Man, Sharon Coe

Honors Theses

The first thing one learns when trying to get information on sleep, dreams, and the interpretation of dreams is that very little is known about any of these subjects. The study of dreams is a relatively new field--only about fifteen years old, although dream interpretation has been studied in many ancient civilizations. The story is told in the Bible (Genesis 4) of the symbolic dreams that Pharaoh had and Joseph's interpretation of it.

The Measurement Of The Instructor Variable In The Instructional Process By A Rank Order, Forced Choice Procedure Along Five Basic Dimensions, Martha Louise Green Jan 1970

The Measurement Of The Instructor Variable In The Instructional Process By A Rank Order, Forced Choice Procedure Along Five Basic Dimensions, Martha Louise Green

Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, a rating of professors as a variable in the learning process through a dimension rank order technique was made by 316 undergraduate students. An instructor evaluation instrument was used. This instrument was administered to students who were asked to rank order their professors on five basic dimensions of instruction.

The rank ordering demonstrated meaning in standard scores among instructors by a paired comparison transformation, and since parameters (a complete department) were used, absolute values were obtained. There was clear evidence to indicate that students could reliably and significantly discriminate between instructors on five basic dimensions of …

The Effect Of Environment On The Mentally Retarded Child, Patricia L. Greene Jan 1970

The Effect Of Environment On The Mentally Retarded Child, Patricia L. Greene

Honors Theses

Mental retardation is one of the most challenging problems of childhood. It affects not only the child but also parents, siblings, and the community. The retarded child needs the help of the physician, the psychologist, the social worker, the teacher, and even the lawmakers.

The question of mental retardation, fortunately, is now being brought into the open. The child who is mentally retarded is no longer kept behind closed windows and locked doors. Mental retardation, formerly, looked upon as a stigma, is now considered a disease, like tuberculosis, diabetes, and heart trouble.

Mental retardation had been designated by various terms …

Use Of The Pals Test To Differentiate Between High Achieving And Low Achieving Fifth Gradestudents: A Validity Study, Mickey H. Parson Jan 1970

Use Of The Pals Test To Differentiate Between High Achieving And Low Achieving Fifth Gradestudents: A Validity Study, Mickey H. Parson

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the PALS Tests (Williams, 1958, 1961, 1964) would significantly differentiate between low achieving and hie;h achieving 5th-grade students. The basic design was the same basic design as used by Williams (1961), except that high achieving and low achieving students were used instead of acting-out and normal children. It was intended that this research supplement existing data concerning validity of the PALS Tests. The test author (Williams 1958, 1961, 1964) seems to be the only person who has conducted research regarding the PALS.
