Retention Of Conservation Acquired By Instructional Methods, Eight Months After Termination Of Instruction, Wenden W. Waite

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study attempted to determine if subjects that had been instructed in the principle of conservation, maintained conservation after termination of instructions. Using subjects from kindergarten to third grade that had received instructions by use of both concrete example and mental imagery methods. Those S's that received instructions were compared with S's that had received no instructions. A test of conservation was administered to a total of 96 S's approximately eight months after termination of instructions to determine if the scores received on a test of those students that had received instructions exceeded those S's that had not received instructions. …

An in-depth personality and intellectual evaluation of a group of hermaphroditic children residing in the state of Oklahoma was undertaken in this study. The following techniques were utilized in order to extensively study the impact of this anomaly on the families of these children: psychological tests, parental interviews by a social worker, and diagnostic play interviews conducted by the investigator. It was the purpose of this study to examine the psychological impact of sexual ambiguity on the child and his parents.

There were no significant differences between the two groups on any of the tests given. This may be attributed …

Reading Instruction And Phonetic Control In Materials Development Based Upon Relative Frequency Of Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondences, Richard T. Grow May 1969

Reading Instruction And Phonetic Control In Materials Development Based Upon Relative Frequency Of Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondences, Richard T. Grow

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation suggests a new approach to reading instruction and phonetic control in materials development. The central feature of this approach is its reliance on phoneme-grapheme correspondence data.

Specifically, the products of this dissertation were (1) the development of relative frequency tables depicting the various phonemes produced by a given grapheme structure, (2) the development of five different levels of phonetic sophistication, (3) the classification of 974 words as regular or irregular in accordance with each level of sophistication, and (4) the phonetic rewriting of three existing short stories to make them phonetically regular.

One of the phonetically rewritten stories …

Twenty-two children enrolled in the Logan, Utah Head-Start Program comprised the sample. Product-moment correlations indicated a significant relationship between these instruments.

The following tentative conclusions were drawn:

  1. The Wexler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence bears a relationship to the Draw-a-Man and Bender-Gestalt tests similar to that between the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and these instruments.

  2. The Bender-Gestalt test, using the Koppitz scoring system, and the Draw-a-Man test can serve a similar checking function with the Wexler Preschool and Primary Scale …

Affect And Meaningfulness As Variables In Mediate Association, James A. Aagard May 1969

Affect And Meaningfulness As Variables In Mediate Association, James A. Aagard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine whether affect influences mediate association. A second purpose of this experiment was to test whether there could be found an interaction between affect and meaningfulness in the verbal mediation scores.

The subjects were all of the students registered for an Educational Psychology class at Utah State University, Spring Quarter, 1969. These students were randomly assigned to one of two groups, designated Phase I or Phase II. Phase I was designed to study the influence of affect upon mediation and the subjects in this group learned two lists of seven paired associates. Phase …

Spatial Reasoning As Related To Solving "Story Type" Problems, James R. Holder May 1969

Spatial Reasoning As Related To Solving "Story Type" Problems, James R. Holder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this study it was hypothesized that the ability to mentally solve II story type" problems, those presented in the form of sentences, is significantly related to one's spatial reasoning ability and that a weakness in this ability, when tested by the "story type" problems, could be compensated for by training in and utilization of overt "paper and pencil" manipulations.

To test the hypothesis, three measures were used. These were the DAT Verbal Reasoning test--used to control the factor of verbal reasoning, the DAT Space Relations test--used to measure spatial reasoning ability, and two forms of a test composed of …

Superordinate Words And Subordinate Words In Mediate Association, Chalermwong Vajanasoontorn May 1969

Superordinate Words And Subordinate Words In Mediate Association, Chalermwong Vajanasoontorn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of the superordinate and subordinate words as mediators in mediate association learning across three different age groups in the A-B, B-C, A-C mediation paradigm. The effects of sex difference, high and low levels of associational fluency, as well as a type of pre-training which was done by requiring subjects to create associations to the mediating B terms, were considered .

The subjects used were, 50 fourth graders (22 boys and 28 girls), 54 seventh graders (26 boys and 28 girls), and 51 tenth graders (22 boys and 29 girls), for …

A Study Of The Difference In Short-Term Memory Between Seventh Grade Students Rated High And Low In The Ability To Acquire Sport Skills, Vera Jeppesen Watkins May 1969

A Study Of The Difference In Short-Term Memory Between Seventh Grade Students Rated High And Low In The Ability To Acquire Sport Skills, Vera Jeppesen Watkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the possibility that the short-term memory factor may be one of the variables involved in the learning of motor skills.

The subjects of the study were all of the seventh grade gym students at Logan Junior High School who were rated by their teachers as being in the upper or lower one-fourth of their class in respect to their abilities in sport skills. After a short-term memory (STM) test developed by the researcher was administered to this group, their scores were compared to determine whether there was a significant difference between the upper and lower one-fourth.

An …

Effects Of Gold Compounds On Rat Behavior, Jonas Kaye May 1969

Effects Of Gold Compounds On Rat Behavior, Jonas Kaye

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Seven rats were trained on Fixed Ratio 20 and two on Fixed Ratio 12 Escape Schedules until a stable baseline was established. Five of the subjects were administered gold thioglucose, three received gold thiomalate, and one was injected with gold, gold thioglucose, and gold thiomalate, allowing for an intrasubject comparison. Colloidal gold appeared to suppress response rate for one or two sessions, while gold thioglucose and gold thiomalate suppressed normal response rates from several to a number of sessions. This response rate suppression was often followed by gradual recovery, although in several subjects recovery of response rate could not be …

The Influence Of Teaching Experience Upon School Counselors, John Whorton Allen May 1969

The Influence Of Teaching Experience Upon School Counselors, John Whorton Allen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The increased demand for more school counselors since World War II raised many questions concerning their preparation and training. One of the most controversial topics has been that of requiring teaching experience as a prerequisite for counselor certification. We find ourselves in a milieu of controversy in which some advocates are proposing that teaching experience can handicap the counselor in his effectiveness while others are saying that teaching experience is a vital prerequisite for counselor effectiveness.

Imitation Of Tolerance For Delay In Children: The Effects Of Model-Subject Similarity., Susan Mendenhall Apr 1969

Imitation Of Tolerance For Delay In Children: The Effects Of Model-Subject Similarity., Susan Mendenhall

Psychology ETDs

The experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of high and low delay tolerant models on children's delay behavior, and to assess effects of subject-model delay similarity on imitation of a second task. High, low, and middle delay subjects heard a model give either high or low delay responses to the Mischel questionnaire. Subjects were also shown the model's success expectancy on a ring toss game. Analysis of post-test delay change showed that high and low delay models produced significantly differential modeling, which was in part a function of the initial delay tolerance of the subjects. Subject-model delay similarity did not …

Sex Role Identification Of Children Of Divorced Parents, Frank A. Brown Iii Mar 1969

Sex Role Identification Of Children Of Divorced Parents, Frank A. Brown Iii

Masters Theses

This study was designed to explore the effects of parental divorce on the male college student's over-all adjustment and his difficulty in completing the sex role identification process. Behavioral ratings of the Ss and their scores on the MMPI were used to test each of these effects. Specifically it was hypothesized that the conflict in the home preceding the divorce, more than the separation from one of the parents after it, was likely to cause difficulty for the "child" in the sex-typing process. It was also suggested that in the cases where the male "child of divorce" originally blamed the …

An Analytical Investigation Of Instructions Designed To Elicit Test Anxiety, Karl Kilby Long Jan 1969

An Analytical Investigation Of Instructions Designed To Elicit Test Anxiety, Karl Kilby Long

Psychology ETDs

Three components of motivating instructions typically used to elicit performance decrements in high test-anxious Ss were investigated to determine whether: (a) the mention of a test, (b) identifying the test as an intelligence test, or (c) suggesting evaluation in relation to a peer-group is primarily responsible for the observed decrement. High and low test-anxious Ss were given 12 paired-associate lists of English word pairs, with the experimental instructions given between the 8th and 9th lists. Analyses of post-instruction changes in learning behavior revealed significant differences only between the instruction condition containing the full set of components and the controls. These …
