Benedictine Life And Care For The Environment, John Klassen O.S.B. Mar 2024

Benedictine Life And Care For The Environment, John Klassen O.S.B.

The Journal of Social Encounters

In this presentation I want to show in simple terms how monastic life provides spiritual practices for our community to live the Gospel in a way that is responsive and respectful to the environment. Consequently, I organize my presentation around four words or phrases from the Rule of Benedict (RB). The first one is the community of goods. The second is stability. Thethird is frugality, and the fourth is a contemplative stance. These four words or phrases provide the frame for this presentation and are central to spirituality of the Rule of Saint Benedict.

Environmental Peacebuilding: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Ken Conca Mar 2024

Environmental Peacebuilding: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Ken Conca

The Journal of Social Encounters

The field of environmental peacebuilding emerged as a counter to the idea that violent conflict was an inevitable byproduct of environmental change. Two decades ago, my colleague Geoffrey Dabelko and I published a book, Environmental Peacemaking, sketching the argument that ecological interdependencies could be instrumentalized as a force for peace (Conca & Dabelko, 2002). Other early works from this period focused on the peace opportunities in biodiversity conservation (Matthew et al., 2002) and transboundary protected areas (Brock, 1991; Ali, 2007). Since that time, a substantial community of research and practice has emerged around these ideas. In this essay I discuss …

Mineta Transportation Institute

This study offers a solution that facilitates direct trading of carbon credits with no intermediaries by using blockchain technology aligned with the cap-and-trade system. With this solution, along with other major transformations in the industry, the transportation sector can take more ownership of emissions and mitigate the impact of its role as the largest contributor of greenhouse gasses. The solution sits at the confluence of the Cap-and-Trade initiative, carbon credit trading, and blockchain technology. Although the concept of blockchains has been the subject of significant curiosity, scrutiny, boosterism, investment, criticism, it most importantly is at the core of useful, rapidly …

Peran Algoritma Media Sosial Dalam Penyebaran Propaganda Politik Digital Menjelang Pemilu, Ismail Zaky Al Fatih, Rachmatsah Adi Putera, Zahri Hariman Umar

Jurnal Kajian Stratejik Ketahanan Nasional

Social media has transformed the political landscape, becoming crucial in general election preparations. It provides direct access to voters, a platform for political candidates to interact with audiences, and enables active participation in the political process. However, it also poses risks, such as the spread of false information, social division, and polarization. Algorithms on social media play a central role in shaping public perceptions of elections. These algorithms can create “filter bubbles,” where users are only exposed to views aligning with their beliefs, and “echo chambers,” reinforcing existing views. This qualitative research, using a literature study method, found that digital …

Specifically, through an extensive literature review and analysis, I will investigate: How does the culture of poverty ideology influence public opinions and policy responses to homelessness in the United States and Australia? To answer this question, I will first introduce the concept …

The utilization of information and communication technology crossing national borders opens opportunities for state and non-state actors to engage in various detrimental activities. Information theft, attacks on banking systems, military networks, and national infrastructure pose threats that must be addressed. Cyberspace, with its boundaryless, abstract, and timeless nature, becomes a field for transnational criminal activities. In this context, cybersecurity is not only the responsibility of the government but also requires cross-sector cooperation. Proactive policy development, robust cybersecurity infrastructure, and public-private collaboration are key to protecting critical systems and maintaining national stability. Intelligence governance also plays a crucial role in addressing …

“Old Soldiers Need Only Apply”: Exploring Pathways To The Quasi-Civilianisation Of The Maritime Sector In Indonesia, I Gusti Bagus Dharma Agastia

Jurnal Politik

This article explores the phenomenon of quasi-civilianisation, or the inclusion of former or active-duty military officers in civilian administrative positions, in maritime security governance in Indonesia. To what extent is the maritime sector quasi-civilianised? Second, what are the pathways to quasi-civilianisation in the maritime sector? This paper finds that quasi-civilians tend to be concentrated in paramilitary agencies and to a lesser extent, in limited functional roles within the civilian administration. Quasi-civilians are desirable for these positions due to their expertise and ability to mediate between military and civilian counterparts. Moreover, the appointment of quasi-civilians has generally complied with prevailing regulations …

The phenomenon of family involvement in organized narcotics crime emerged in Indonesia when Lian Silas, the father of a narcotics lord - Fredy Pratama, was involved in alleged money laundering from the proceeds of his son's illicit narcotics business. Not only that, Fredy also involved other family members. In fact, this phenomenon is nothing new in cases of organized narcotics crime, as the Italian mafia group is also closely linked to the role of the family in the crimes committed. This research found that can also be exploited by criminals to collaborate in carrying out their actions. The analysis was …

How Will California’S Electric Vehicle Policy Impact State-Generated Transportation Revenues? Projecting Scenarios Through 2040, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Hannah King, H. A. “Burt” Tasaico

Mineta Transportation Institute

California faces unprecedented uncertainty about how much revenue the state will raise from a package of taxes on motor fuels and annual registration fees on light-duty vehicles that was established in 2017 by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1). The SB 1 taxes are by far the largest source of revenue that the State of California generates to support maintenance, operations, and improvements for state highways, and the funds also contribute substantially to local transportation and public transit budgets. To help policymakers navigate the uncertainty about future SB 1 transportation revenue, this study used spreadsheet models to project revenue from the …

Conditional Neural Heuristic For Multiobjective Vehicle Routing Problems, Mingfeng Fan, Yaoxin Wu, Zhiguang Cao, Wen Song, Guillaume Sartoretti, Huan Liu, Guohua Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing neural heuristics for multiobjective vehicle routing problems (MOVRPs) are primarily conditioned on instance context, which failed to appropriately exploit preference and problem size, thus holding back the performance. To thoroughly unleash the potential, we propose a novel conditional neural heuristic (CNH) that fully leverages the instance context, preference, and size with an encoder–decoder structured policy network. Particularly, in our CNH, we design a dual-attention-based encoder to relate preferences and instance contexts, so as to better capture their joint effect on approximating the exact Pareto front (PF). We also design a size-aware decoder based on the sinusoidal encoding to explicitly …
