(Wp 2024-04) Making Philosophy Relevant To Economists, John B. Davis
(Wp 2024-04) Making Philosophy Relevant To Economists, John B. Davis
Economics Working Papers
This chapter discusses how philosophy could influence economists in the future. It emphasizes factors affecting economists’ willingness to incorporate philosophical ideas in economics, and distinguishes a weak case and a strong case for them doing so. Both are tied to behavioral welfare economics’ ‘reconciliation problem’ regarding the relationship between positive and normative economics. The weak case concerns the nature of individual identity in connection with how present bias and weakness of will potentially pit today’s and tomorrow’s selves against one another. The strong case concerns the normative scope of economic policy and expanding policy recommendation beyond its current welfare-only basis. …

KNEA 50th Anniversary
In 1973, the Kansas State College, Pittsburg administration fired thirteen faculty members without cause. In order to improve administration-faculty relations, remaining faculty organized, petitioned for recognition, and drafted PSU/KNEA's first contract with PSU/KBOR, which went into effect five years later. The narrative covering this period draws on Axe Library's KNEA Collection and interviews of former faculty.

Enhancing Access And Inclusion: The Retrofitting Of Olympic Facilities For The Paralympic Games, Lawrence W. Judge, Jeffrey Petersen, Adam Smith, Kyra Livergood
Journal of Applied Sport Management
This critical review examines the strategies and challenges in adapting Olympic facilities for Paralympic use. A synthesis of recent literature evaluates successful retrofitting initiatives, elucidates ongoing challenges, and assesses the repercussions of global events on the dynamic process of facility conversion. The resulting analysis culminates in evidence-based recommendations for future investigations and the operational enhancement of Paralympic venues. These findings suggest that adopting a collaborative approach, anchored in universal design principles and preemptive planning, is imperative to developing accessible, efficient, and ecologically responsible Paralympic infrastructures.

Opportunities to engage in name, image, and likeness (NIL) partnerships have pervaded college athletics on numerous fronts. To contextualize the most important factors contributing to a college athletes’ NIL value, the present study analyzed High-Major basketball players NIL valuations during the 2023-2024 season. In total, data representing 69% of High-Major men’s basketball players (n = 572) and 52% of High-Major women’s basketball players (n = 429) was collected. Attempting to statistically control for factors such as institutional prestige, media exposure, and athletic performance, results indicate that an athlete’s social media following – specifically their Instagram following – is …

Managing Coach-Athlete Dynamics: Immediacy And Meta-Perception In Intercollegiate Sports, Erica Pasquini, Lindsey Blom, James Johnson, Adam Smith, Lawrence W. Judge
Journal of Applied Sport Management
This study investigates the correlation between intercollegiate athletes' meta-perception accuracy and their assessment of coaches' immediacy behaviors, and actions that foster closeness. Utilizing the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire, 54 athletes evaluated their coaches' immediacy. Findings indicate that lower meta-accuracy aligns with perceived lower immediacy, highlighting the role of perceived relational closeness in athlete self-awareness. Gender dynamics, in terms of coach-athlete dyads, exhibited no effect on meta-perception accuracy. The findings of the study lend credence to sport managers including immediacy behaviors in coach training to enhance athletes' meta-accuracy perception, while also contributing to the literature on meta-perception in sports and coach-athlete gender …
Intimate Partner Violence And Negotiation During Covid-19: Stressors, Resources, And Perception, Victoria P. Diamond
Intimate Partner Violence And Negotiation During Covid-19: Stressors, Resources, And Perception, Victoria P. Diamond
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health concern that affects millions across the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic created unforeseen stress, and necessitated safety policies that required social isolation, often extended exposure to one’s intimate partner, and an inability to access stress-reduction resources. These factors, along with many others, lead to an abrupt increase in IPV in many couples. Using the couple-adapted family stress model (ABCX), the current study examines both previously defined (e.g., emotional dysregulation, stress, unemployment, communication issues) and COVID-19 specific risk (e.g., quarantine, unprecedented social isolation, fear of contracting COVID-19) and protective factors (e.g., meaning in …
Family Size And Child Migration: Do Daughters Face Greater Trade-Offs Than Sons?, Christine Ho, Yutao Wang, Sharon Xuejing Zuo
Family Size And Child Migration: Do Daughters Face Greater Trade-Offs Than Sons?, Christine Ho, Yutao Wang, Sharon Xuejing Zuo
Research Collection School Of Economics
We show that, conditional on family size, rural boys and girls are equally likely to migrate with parents in China. Nevertheless, daughters’ migration may still be compromised because they tend to have more siblings in societies with strong son preference, and larger families are more likely to leave all children behind. We find that a one unit increase in sibship size decreases the probability that a daughter migrates by 12.5 percentage points—with stronger effects when migration restrictions are more stringent—but has negligible effects on sons. The results suggest that gender-neutral migration constraints may generate gendered family size trade-offs.

Diverse Pathways To Permanent Childlessness In Singapore: A Latent Class Analysis, Yanwen Wang, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, Christine Ho
Research Collection School Of Economics
The proportions of adults reaching midlife without having children have been rising rapidly across the globe, particularly in Asia. However, little is known about the pathways to permanent childlessness within the region’s childless population. This study utilized latent class analysis (LCA) to typologize pathways to childlessness based on dynamic characteristics of multiple life domains (i.e., partnership, education, and occupation) among 489 childless Singaporeans aged 50 and above from a 2022 nationwide survey. Additionally, we utilized multinomial logistic regressions to examine the sociodemographic correlates of pathway profiles and Shannon’s entropy index to assess the heterogeneity in pathways to childlessness among successive …
Reclaiming Healing Spaces: A Phenomenological Study On The Transformative Power Of Outdoor Therapy From The Lived Experiences Of Black Clinicians Working With Black Clients, Lynn Murphy
Dissertations
This phenomenological study involved assessing the experiences of Black therapists who engaged Black clients in outdoor therapeutic contexts. The study was founded on the existing literature that shows the quality of the therapeutic relationship is pivotal for client retention and the Western standards that have historically favored treatment within indoor environments. To contextualize this research, a comprehensive literature review was commenced, covering topics such as the decolonization of therapy, the historical and present-day relationship between Blacks and the outdoors in the United States, sedentary lifestyles, the psychological benefits of time spent in nature, various types of outdoor therapy, and the …

Nationalism And The Federal State’S Agricultural Policies; The Politics Of Cassava In Zambia, 1953-1963, Kaluba Jickson Chama
Zambia Social Science Journal
During the Federal era, cassava played an important role in political mobilisation in Luapula Province. Nonetheless, the crop has seldom received attention in the otherwise rich historiography on African nationalism and anti-Federation struggle in present-day Zambia. Drawing on archival sources and oral history, and a reading of secondary sources, this article attempts to contribute to the historiography of cassava in Zambia and its contribution to the nationalist cause. The article examines the position of cassava in political mobilisation by nationalist politicians. It explores the link between the politics of cassava and those of nationalism. This article’s key argument is that …

The Role Of Kenneth Kaunda’S Humanism In Fostering Higher Education For Social Responsibility In Post-Colonial Zambia (1964-1991), Edward Mboyonga
Zambia Social Science Journal
Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s first president from 1964 to 1991, advanced a Pan-African social-political ideology of humanism as a moral code to guide all human activities in the nation’s political, economic, and social spheres. Within education, humanism envisaged producing socially responsible and public good-oriented graduates equipped with humane values and capable of driving the national development agenda. This paper critically examines the nexus between Kaunda’s humanism and education by focussing on its role in fostering higher education for social responsibility in post-colonial Zambia. In addressing this, it focusses on the University of Zambia as a case study by drawing on secondary …

The Late President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda’S Influence On Wildlife Conservation And Tourism In South Luangwa National Park Of Zambia, Chikondi Banda-Thole, Thomas Kweku Taylor, Thor Larsen
Zambia Social Science Journal
Wildlife in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley has fascinated tourists from the pre-colonial era to date. Writings on the prolific beauty of the region describe the abundance of species and beautiful scenery of the valley. The late President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda declared South Luangwa a National Park in 1971. He further facilitated the Luangwa Integrated Rural Development Project (LIRDP) funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) to support the management of the Park and engage local communities in conservation efforts and livelihood development. The South Luangwa National Park and adjacent Game Management Areas were Dr. Kaunda’s preferred destination for work …
A Zambian Requiem: Kenneth Kaunda In Collective Memory, Meldad L. Chama, Beatrice Kapanda Simataa
A Zambian Requiem: Kenneth Kaunda In Collective Memory, Meldad L. Chama, Beatrice Kapanda Simataa
Zambia Social Science Journal
Memorialisation can hide the “true past.” Most of the past that is memorialised has political and sentimental significance. This paper attempts to reconstruct Kenneth Kaunda’s historical significance from remembrances about KK. We conceptualise the memorialisation and commemoration of KK using a Zambian mourning process and highlight how remembrances about KK produce a hagiographic narrative. The paper demonstrates that KK’s role in creating a Zambian collective memory based on his Humanism created a knowledge vacuum in Zambian historical memory. Furthermore, the monumentalising of KK seems to encourage forgetfulness but mausoleums also serve a mnemonic function to Zambian collective memory and history. …

A Close Look At Kenneth Kaunda’S Life: Interviews With Those Who Knew Him Personally, Victoria Phiri Chitungu
Zambia Social Science Journal
Victoria Phiri Chitungu and her team conducted a remarkable series of interviews with people personally close to Kenneth Kaunda, along with Kaunda himself, and together these offer a different, more personal perspective on Kaunda’s life. The articles in this special issue primarily focus on Kaunda as a public and political figure and Kaunda as a real-life human being can sometimes disappear in this perspective. He was a symbol for many people, alternately revered and reviled. Chitungu’s interviews are different. Here, we glimpse into Kaunda’s personal life: the food he ate, the songs he sang, how he slept, and his family …

A Midwest Perspective On Biochar Integration In Extension, Blake C. Colclasure, Elizabeth Bose, Jack Dempsey, Taylor K. Ruth
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Biochar can be considered a climate-smart, agricultural soil amendment due to its ability to provide long-term storage of carbon. Research examining the impacts of biochar-enriched soils reported improved soil characteristics often leading to agricultural benefits, especially in nutrient-poor soils. Despite the potential use of biochar in the Midwest, United States, few studies have examined biochar in Extension. This study, guided by the Theory of Reasoned Action, used survey methodology to collect information on Midwest Extension agents’ (n = 125) knowledge, attitudes, and subjective normative beliefs toward biochar. These factors, along with agents’ demographics and perceptions toward sustainable soil amendments, were …

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Nutrition education can improve nutrition and health for refugees. Extension program directors providing nutrition education to refugees were surveyed regarding successful program techniques, program challenges, and both the barriers refugees face and the strengths they possess concerning healthy eating. Researchers used grounded theory to explore the qualitative data. Hands-on, skill-based learning emerged as a main theme of successful programs. Language and cultural issues emerged as main program challenges. It is recommended that future refugee nutrition education programs provide culturally sensitive opportunities for skill-based learning.

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Poverty is a pervasive issue impacting many areas of human sciences and Extension. Individuals living in the United States may have varying attitudes toward poverty. Research has shown that poverty simulations are effective in modifying attitudes toward poverty. The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) program is one such example that exposes its participants to the lived realities of poverty in the United States. While research on CAPS is plentiful, little research has examined the experiences of those who simulated the community worker role. This research explored the experiences of students who simulated community worker roles during a CAPS simulation. This …
