Economic Analysis Of Alternative Flood Control Measures By Digital Computer, Thomas M. Rachford Jan 1966

Economic Analysis Of Alternative Flood Control Measures By Digital Computer, Thomas M. Rachford

KWRRI Research Reports

The purpose of this project was to develop a digital computer program for selecting the optimum combination of flood proofing, flood-plain land use, channel improvement, and residual flood damage for a given floodplain. Based on economic efficiency, the optimum policy is selected for each planning unit of the total flood-plain for each period of time called a planning stage. The program was written in Fortran IV for the IBM 7040 and the University of Kentucky Computing Center compiler. The program requires about 23,000 words of core storage and about 30 seconds of execution time per planning-unit-stage for typical conditions. The …

The Politics Of Planning For Urban Redevelopment: Strategies In The Manipulation Of Public Law, Sheldon J. Plager, Joel F. Handler Jan 1966

The Politics Of Planning For Urban Redevelopment: Strategies In The Manipulation Of Public Law, Sheldon J. Plager, Joel F. Handler

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In this article Professors Plager and Handler examine the influence of legal process upon decision making in municipal redevelopment. Their thesis is that public acceptance of a redevelopment venture depends primarily on the command of political and planning skills and occurs despite rather than because of legal procedures designed to accommodate principles of democracy. Partly through the method of a case study of recent data collected from one municipality, partly by comparative analysis with other studies, they conclude that the reality of decision making in the region they explore is the predominance of informal power over formal, democratic, legal decision-making …

An Institute For Urban Studies: A Preliminary Proposal, Luther G. Hagard

Institute of Urban Studies Publications

No metropolitan area in the state is equipped with an instrument for continuing and comprehensive study of the multitude of problems confronting urban communities. Other urban areas of the nation have long had the services of "bureaus" or "institutes" financed and staffed for extensive research activities. Most such units are academically based and many are constituted as states agencies associated with public institutions of higher education. Their contributions in the form of basic research, data compilation, training, and information services have been of significant value in the search for effective solutions to urban problems. The Dallas - Fort Worth metropolitan …

Poor Relief In Tudor England, Edith Burrows Jan 1966

Poor Relief In Tudor England, Edith Burrows

Honors Theses

In many respects the sixteenth century in England marks the beginning of a definite acceleration toward modern humanitarianism. It was an era characterized by the slow decline and definite disappearance of all aspects of manorial society. The progressive changes in institutions and the way of thinking reciprocally aided each other, hastening the rise of a new, more humane society. The reforms, at first hesitant and cautious, were by the end of the century confident and deliberate.

Ideas For A Better City, University Of Tennessee. Municipal Technical Advisory Service Jan 1966

Ideas For A Better City, University Of Tennessee. Municipal Technical Advisory Service

MTAS History

MTAS receives virtually all periodicals in the field of municipal government and also obtains many other publications in this field . In the aggregate these contain a "mass of information" (when trying to sift, classify and assimilate, we sometimes wish it were much less in quantity!). These materials are routed to staff members for their examination; in this process they mark any items that appear to be noteworthy, and Mrs. Bush writes the summaries for this publication.

These items are not necessarily "new" ideas, for the term "new" assumes a relative meaning. There is little, if anything, in the field …

Factors Affecting Nesting Success Of The Canvasback In The Aspen Parklands, Jerome H. Stoudt

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The Minnedosa study area is located in the southwestern portion of Manitoba just south of the town of Minnedosa. It is 90 square miles in size and roughly square in shape. The Aspen Parkland, in which the study area is located, is characterized by gently rolling terrain and black soils. Mixed farming is the rule with emphasis on small grain production consisting of wheat, barley, and oats. Roughly 50 percent of the water areas in the parkland are ringed with aspen, Populus tremuloides, and large blocks of aspen are interspersed throughout the area. The Minnedosa area differs because of …
