Catalytic Teaching And Ideologized Content, David Catterick
Catalytic Teaching And Ideologized Content, David Catterick
International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching
This article has as its starting point the growing acceptance over the past decade of intentional ideological influence in both English language teaching materials and approaches. It explores some current examples of ideologized content before examining catalytic teaching, the intentioned use of ideologized content by a Christian English language teacher (CELT). The article provides some examples of classroom content that may be considered catalytic and then suggests five guiding principles based in part on the findings of Johnston’s extensive study of the work of CELTs at a language school in Poland. It is hoped that these principles might be helpful …
Gift Of Language, William T. Haselton
Gift Of Language, William T. Haselton
International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching
What is the significance of language? As language teachers, we use it as a medium of communication and as the basis for every lesson we prepare. Could it be more than just a tool of communication or a target for students to strive for? Language actually serves as primary evidence of God’s creation of humankind in His image. Even secular thinkers marvel at the “language instinct” of human beings and regard it as the distinguishing mark of humanity, setting us apart from all other creatures. Considering the amazing wonder of language, any explanation of its origin requires a step of …

Young People And Full Time Pastoral Ministry In The Church Of Pentecost U.S.A., Inc, Frank Asirifi
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The shortage of young pastors to replace the aging and retiring pastorate is an alarming reality confronting Christian churches regardless of location, size, and denomination. This research project's primary objective was to explore the factors discouraging young Christian adults born in the United States of America from responding obediently to God's call into full-time pastoral ministry and create corporate awareness of the holistic nature of the problem and seek a collaborative solution plan to motivate young Christian adults to obey God’s call into full-time pastoral ministry. The project focuses on young American-born adults in the ministry context of The Church …
Making A Muslim: Reading Publics And Contesting Identities In Nineteenth-Century North India, S. Akbar Zaidi
Making A Muslim: Reading Publics And Contesting Identities In Nineteenth-Century North India, S. Akbar Zaidi
Faculty Research - Books
Using primarily Urdu sources from the nineteenth century, this book allows us to rethink notions of 'the Muslim', in its numerous, complex and often contradictory forms, which emerged in colonial North India after 1857. Allowing the self-representation of Muslimness and its manifestations to emerge, it contrasts how the colonial British 'made Muslims' very differently compared to how the community envisaged themselves. A key argument made here contests the general sense of the narrative of lamentation, decay, decline, and a sense of self-pity and ruination, by proposing a different condition, that of zillat, a condition which gave rise to much self-reflection …

A Quantitative Descriptive Study Of The Impact Bible Reading Has On The Lives And Leadership Of American Evangelical Church Pastoral Leaders, Andrea Michelle Tom
A Quantitative Descriptive Study Of The Impact Bible Reading Has On The Lives And Leadership Of American Evangelical Church Pastoral Leaders, Andrea Michelle Tom
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative descriptive research was to ascertain both the amount of time spent reading the Bible and the perceived impact of regular reading on the lives and leadership roles of American Evangelical Christian church pastoral leaders. The central assumption guiding this study was that the Bible is a vital source for Christian leaders that provides many benefits to its readers, including leadership guidance that biblical and historical leaders have diligently applied. Because these leaders serve as role models, the theoretical foundation guiding this research was Albert Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory of Development, which has linked learning to …

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications
The Philippines is the largest Christian-majority country in Asia. With church gatherings playing a vital role in the nature of Christianity in the Filipino culture, the advent of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the Philippines posed challenges to public religious practices amid efforts to mitigate COVID-19 community transmission. Various policy pronouncements from both the government-led Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Diseases and the church-led Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) were issued. These guidelines were implemented in order to address the two-pronged problem on healthcare and religious obligations. While these guidelines were initially contributory to the mitigation …

What Shall We Call God? An Exploration Of Metaphors Coded From Descriptions Of God From A Large U.S. Undergraduate Sample, Adam K. Fetterman, Nicholas D. Evans, Julie J. Exline, Brian P. Meier
What Shall We Call God? An Exploration Of Metaphors Coded From Descriptions Of God From A Large U.S. Undergraduate Sample, Adam K. Fetterman, Nicholas D. Evans, Julie J. Exline, Brian P. Meier
Psychology Faculty Publications
People use numerous metaphors to describe God. God is seen as a bearded man, light, and love. Based on metaphor theories, the metaphors people use to refer to God reflect how people think about God and could, in turn, reflect their worldview. However, little work has explored the common metaphors for God. This was the purpose of the current investigation. Four trained raters coded open-ended responses from predominantly Christian U.S. undergraduates (N = 2,923) describing God for the presence or absence of numerous metaphoric categories. We then assessed the frequency of each of the metaphor categories. We identified 16 metaphor …
