Child Welfare Assessments And Best Practices When Working With Parents Of Prenatally Exposed Infants, Amber Todd
Child Welfare Assessments And Best Practices When Working With Parents Of Prenatally Exposed Infants, Amber Todd
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The estimated number of children born with effects from prenatal alcohol or illicit drugs is over 600,000 per year in the United States. In 2017, California had 5,050 babies test positive at birth for substance use exposure, equating to 14 babies a day. This overwhelming epidemic is mainly placed on the shoulders of Child Welfare Agencies.
The emerging themes in the literature is that states, counties and regions are doing things drastically different from one another in terms of substance exposed infants. Some states are doing more than others, and some have established some best practice techniques, assessments and programs. …

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Comparing Short-Term, Intensive Therapy To Traditional, Long-Term Therapy, Laura Gonzalez, Sean Kruckenberg
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health diagnosis that occurs following a traumatic event, and military veterans are at higher risk of exposure to hazardous or life-threatening situations that may result in psychological trauma. PTSD sufferers experience symptoms such as distressing memories, nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance, and heightened arousal. Individuals with PTSD also experience higher rates of depressive and substance use disorders, involvement with the justice system, and self-harm and suicide. Many agencies, such as the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) provide treatment PTSD, however most programs experience dropout rates as high as 36%. Recent studies have shown that …
Variables Related To Viral Load And Cd4 Variance In Men Living With Hiv, Natalie Christine Blocher
Variables Related To Viral Load And Cd4 Variance In Men Living With Hiv, Natalie Christine Blocher
Masters Theses
In 2018, 37,968 individuals were diagnosed with HIV in the United States (CDC, 2018). Self-identified men made up 81% of all newly diagnosed cases, particularly men who have sex with men (CDC, 2020). Achieving viral load suppression allows men living with HIV to obtain optimal health, maintain quality of life, and prevent the virus's spread (Sax, 2012). Past research in HIV treatment has mainly focused on individual health behaviors, such as medication adherence, to account for the variances in these variables; however, the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and chronic conditions have gradually become a subject of HIV treatment research. …

Information And Communication Technology (Ict) For Effective Implementation Of Mgnrega In Jammu & Kashmir, Sarafraz Ahmad Dr, Shazia Manzoor Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The landmark enactment of MGNREGA legislation in the year 2005 was aimed with a new dawn in poverty alleviation and rural self-employment in India, with prerogatives of rural employment and sustainable development. Success of the program is dependent on various parameters like participation, demand, accountability, implementation, fiscal health and usage of ICT as a tool of facilitation. The contemporary trends in development programs demand the extensive usage of ICT tools for the dissemination of information, planning, execution, and monitoring of programs to cultivate transparency and accountability. Knowing that the ICT is an inseparable part of MGNREGA, still, the tools of …
Narratives Of Distinctiveness Or Similarity And Connection - A Response To Korman, De Jong And Jordan’S Steve De Shazer’S Theory Development, Guy Shennan
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
In 2020 the Journal of Solution Focused Practices published an article called Steve de Shazer’s Theory Development. This surveyed the whole of de Shazer’s career, which the authors divided into four phases, from which they distilled six axioms they believe are foundational to de Shazer’s thinking and practice. In their commentary on the six axioms there is a considerable emphasis on the distinctiveness of SFBT, which the authors are keen to establish as different, in each of its foundational aspects, from most or perhaps all other therapies. This article is a response to this particular aspect of Steve de Shazer’s …

Keeping Each Other Safe: Who Checks On Their Neighbors During Weather Extremes In Summer And Winter?, Lisa Reyes Mason, Christine C. Ekenga
Graduate School of Social Work: Faculty Scholarship
Objective:
Weather extremes are increasing with climate change and associated with higher morbidity and mortality. Promotion of social connections is an emerging area of research and practice for risk reduction during weather extremes. This study examines the practice of checking on neighbors during extreme summer heat and extreme winter weather. Objectives are to (1) describe the extent of neighbor checking during these extremes, and (2) examine factors associated with neighbor checking.
Methods:
We analyze survey data (n = 442) from a primarily low- and moderate- income study sample in a Southeastern U.S. city, using descriptive statistics and logistic regression.
Results: …

From Exposure To Violence Between Mother And Her Intimate Partner To Suicidality Experienced By Urban Adolescents In Chicago’S Southside, Dexter R. Voisin
Faculty Scholarship
Although the relationship between exposure to intimate partner violence and youths’ psychological and other wellbeing has been widely studied, there is limited research about how youths’ exposure to violence between mother and her intimate partner may be related to youth psychological wellbeing. The study used a sample of urban adolescents in Chicago Southbound to examine whether youths’ exposure to verbal conflict between mother and her intimate partner is related to their suicidality and whether youth depression and aggression may be in between such a linkage. Our findings indicated that one-third of the youth had suicidal thoughts or suicidal/self-hurting attempts. Youths’ …

Supportive Supervision And Resilience Alliance To Address Secondary Trauma In Ohio: Preliminary Findings On Impact, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
Other QIC-WD Products
In early 2018, as part of a needs assessment process, the Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD) conducted surveys with 588 Ohio child welfare workers across nine counties to assess organizational culture and climate (OCC), and secondary traumatic stress (STS). The results found that the organizational culture and climate across all participating counties was above average in rigidity and resistance, and below average in engagement. In addition, 53% of respondents experienced elevated levels of STS symptoms. STS can mimic the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Bride, 2007) including nightmares, sleep disruption, avoidance, and irritability. STS in child welfare has …

Umbrella Summaries
What are organizational constraints?
Organizational constraints are work conditions that interfere with an employee’s motivation or ability to perform (Spector & Jex, 1998). Though the overall definition sounds quite broad, the assessment focuses on 11 specific types of constraints: inadequate training, incorrect instruction, lack of necessary information about what to do or how to do it, poor equipment or supplies, lack of equipment or supplies, organizational rules and procedures, conflicting job demands, other employees, the supervisor, inadequate help from others, and interruptions by other people (Spector & Jex, 1998). Respondents indicate how frequently these factors make it difficult or impossible …

Reflections Of A Central Bank Governor, Ernest K. Addison
Reflections Of A Central Bank Governor, Ernest K. Addison
Center for Social Development Research
Central banks seldom play central roles in the strategies that researchers and practitioners formulate for fostering financial capability in marginalized populations, but in this Perspective, by Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, illustrates that the work of those banks is “inextricably linked” to financial capability.
This Perspective presents remarks offered by Dr. Addison as part of the event marking the launch of Financial Capability and Asset Building in Africa (FCAB Africa). Participants gathered virtually for the start of this multinational collaboration in a session of the 22nd biennial conference of the International Consortium for Social Development, which …

Sociology Faculty Publications
INTRODUCTION: HIV prevalence among criminal justice (CJ)-involved adults is five times higher than the general population. Following incarceration, CJ-involved individuals experience multilevel barriers to HIV prevention. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a widely available, daily medication efficacious in preventing HIV. Little is known about PrEP knowledge, acceptability, initiation and sustained use among CJ-involved persons or about how these outcomes vary by multilevel factors. The Southern Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Study (SPECS) will investigate barriers and facilitators for PrEP initiation and sustained use among CJ-involved adults, building a foundation for PrEP interventions for this underserved population.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: SPECS uses a mixed-methods sequential …

Center for Social Development Research
In sub-Saharan Africa, mobile phones and financial technology have opened doors to financial inclusion for millions, but the new financial terrain is uneven ground fraught with risks. High fees, aggressive marketing, mounting personal debt, varied digital access, and nascent regulatory structures heighten vulnerability and threaten hard-won progress toward broad financial inclusion. Financial Capability and Asset Building in Africa, or FCAB Africa, will equip human-service professionals to broaden financial stability, security, and well-being in sub-Saharan Africa, developing the financial capability of service populations and cultivating sound financial strategies. The initiative will also work with financial-service providers to create a comprehensive financial-development …

Cultural Intelligence, Megan Paul
Cultural Intelligence, Megan Paul
Umbrella Summaries
What is cultural intelligence?
Cultural intelligence (CQ) is “a person’s adaptation to new cultural settings and capability to deal effectively with other people with whom the person does not share a common cultural background and understanding” (Earley & Ang, 2003, p. 34). Note that this is about general capabilities that cut across different cultures, rather than effectiveness in a specific culture (Ang et al., 2015). Though this definition sounds like it includes all types of intercultural interactions, the focus is a bit more limited—work settings and situations that involve differences in race, ethnicity, and nationality, either within or across countries. …

Radical Love Unlimited: A Biomythography, Loren Cahill
Radical Love Unlimited: A Biomythography, Loren Cahill
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
This is an experimental text of creative nonfiction. Radical love is defined, and its trivariate dimensions are illustrated—(re)memory, ritual, and (re)imagination— through the lived and imagined experiences of the author. She engages in the genre of biomythography through the speculative mediums of letter writing, memoir, and journaling. She attempts to expand the category of Blackgirlhood and Blackgirls’ subsequent sacred pursuits of healing. This work may be used as an intervention in a wide variety of capacities, but it stands, first and foremost, as a mirror for Blackgirls to bear witness to themselves being centered, as well as another opportunity for …

Therapists are faced with the challenge of developing effective ways to advance cross-cultural engagement with a rapidly growing diverse client population. In this qualitative study, we characterized the way clients and therapists described the quality of working alliance during the mental health intake and examined whether these descriptions vary as a function of their social identities. We conducted in-depth interviews with Ashkenazi (socially advantaged group; n = 22) therapists and their Mizrahi (socially disadvantaged group n = 29) or Ashkenazi (n = 26) clients immediately following their intake session in four mental health clinics in Israel. We performed a thematic …

Communication Is Key To Success, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
QIC-Tips
Research on organizational communication describes a connection between poor communication, negative attitudes towards the workplace, and decreased worker satisfaction. Conversely, in an environment where communication is valued by management, staff can be encouraged to participate in practice and policy change. Too often new initiatives are announced and then fade away. Clear lines of communication, involving varying levels of staff and using a variety of methods, are key to gaining staff buy-in and keeping workers informed of initiative progress.
The Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD) is working with eight jurisdictions to develop and test promising workforce interventions. Effective communication …

The Cost Of Being Black In Social Work Practicum, Nia Johnson, Paul Archibald, Anthony Estreet, Amanda Morgan
Publications and Research
The social work profession is not exempt from fueling institutional racism, which affects the provision of social work practicum education for Black social work students. This article highlights how the historical and current social cost of being Black in the United States presents itself within social work education’s signature pedagogy. Social workers who hold bachelor’s degrees in social work (BSW) are more likely to be Black than those holding master’s degrees in social work (MSW; Salsberg et al., 2017). It takes Black students longer to earn an MSW degree though they are more likely to hold a BSW while also …

The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences With Men's Lifetime Use Of Physical Intimate Partner Violence, Katherine Sias
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A national study on mental health asked men in a marriage-like relationship about their own use of physical aggression during their lifetime with the women in their life while dating and their current relationship). This study included questions on exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACE). Access to those items provided a unique opportunity to examine the role of ACE and men’s self-reported lifetime use intimate partner violence (IPV). A hierarchical analysis using 15 variables in three categories of ACE (family-of-origin violence, impaired parenting, individual adversities) identified predictors within each category associated with IPV use. When the variables in the family-of-origin …
