International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between meeting recommendations for 24-hour movement behaviors, parental academic support, and student academic achievement in a sample of Alaskan adolescents. Data were obtained from the 2019 Alaska Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS; N = 1,897; mean age = 15.8 ± 1.3 years old). The associations between meeting recommendations for the 24-hour movement behaviors of physical activity, screen use, and sleep with high academic achievement (mostly A’s and B’s) were examined using weighted multivariable logistic regressions. Subpopulation analyses determined if associations differed by levels of parental academic support. Approximately 18.8% of …

Carceral Calisthenics: Physical Culture In The Hood, Albert L. De La Tierra Sep 2022

Carceral Calisthenics: Physical Culture In The Hood, Albert L. De La Tierra

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

How do racialized men who reside in structurally marginalized locales that are putatively regarded as “the hood” navigate and manage their social conditions? This dissertation sheds light on this question by treating “street workout,” a physical culture centered around calisthenics exercises performed in public space, as an empirical site for generating a situated understanding of how some Black men assert themselves in social space at the same time that they are asserted upon by social forces. Taking an ethico-onto-epistem-ological stance that refuses the colonial gaze (a ubiquitously employed optic that dehumanizes racialized people), this dissertation asks: (1) What embodied practices …

Play: A Normative Theory Of Agency And Culture, Maxaie Belmont Sep 2022

Play: A Normative Theory Of Agency And Culture, Maxaie Belmont

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

From the beginning, people are introduced to many different attempts at engaging with various “cultures”, and of course, are born into their own. The extant literature of various fields in the social sciences have afforded us the realization that no one culture holds neither moral ground nor blueprint for how to be a culture, as our own culture is one of many, all a part of the world. Yet, because of the way our culture specifies how we are to engage and live, we tend towards the assumption that our culture has monopoly on the definition of culture. The following …

Pay-To-Play: A Quantitative Analysis Of Opportunity, Achievement, And Parental Motivation In Youth Club Soccer, Alec Joseph Golini

Masters Theses

In the last twenty years, the youth sport experience in the United States has been shaped by a family’s ability to pay. Under the pay-to-play model in American youth sports, advancing to the highest levels of the game not only requires the standard expenditures, but significant investment which accounts for coaching, equipment, travel, training, and other resources. Previous research on the topic has analyzed the impact of income, educational attainment, and race and ethnicity on access to elite-level sports opportunities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the pay-to-play model and factors associated with athletic outcomes at three youth …

Picked Last: A Review Of Transgender Athletes’ Experiences In Sport, Jacqueline Villanueva

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Transgender athletes have a long and complicated history in relation to the sports they exist within and the governing bodies that surround them. As well, their unique relationship to their gender identity, their teammates, and to their sport, is oftentimes strained. Major sporting organizations such as the International Olympic Committee or FINA have often been at the centre of controversy with transgender participation policies that lack the needed elements of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Through a review of the pertinent literature from prominent journals in the sociology of sport and queer methodology, literature pertaining to transgender athletes and policy from …

Learnings From The Pandemic's Impact On Parasport: An Analysis Of Parasport Experiences During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Erica Lo

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

The pandemic has impacted the casual/non-sport, recreational, and elite para-sport experience by emphasizing social isolation, career uncertainty, training quality, and accessibility. This poster aims to examine the lived experiences of parasport participants and the implications on parasport development during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Quotes from para-sport participants were collected from online forums on the study (Project Echo) website and through live, virtual discussions facilitated by Project Echo researchers. 6 themes were found from the data set. Ncaa Di Assistant Coaches' Understanding Of Mental Performance And Mental Health Services, Heather Hill Aug 2022

Ncaa Di Assistant Coaches' Understanding Of Mental Performance And Mental Health Services, Heather Hill

Master's Theses

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has acknowledged the importance of providing student-athletes with psychological services throughout their athletic careers (NCAA, n.d.). Two vital services for student-athletes are mental performance services that are focused on sport-related issues and mental health services that are centered around personal issues (Sudano & Miles, 2017). Previous literature around mental performance and mental health services has not distinguished between them, making it difficult to understand key stakeholders’ perceptions and knowledge of both mental performance and mental health services. Assistant coaches play an important role in NCAA athletic departments and spend substantial amounts of time connecting …

The Influence Of Social Agents On Learning, Developing, And Growing Through Athletic Participation: A Theory Of Athlete Development, Rikishi T. Rey

Communication (PhD) Dissertations

Sports can significantly influence the lives of those who play them. Psychosocial outcomes such as values, skills, self-esteem, and goal setting are some of the referenced benefits associated with playing sports and are the result of athletes being exposed to situations in an environment that is favorable to learning. Due to the abundant nature of sports in the United States, there is a growing need to understand how to effectively create environments that are conducive to positive outcomes. However, such results and experiences are often anecdotally supported rather than scientifically driven. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was two-fold. First, …
