Behind The Curtain: Recommendations For Neurodiversity Research, Andree Koehler
Behind The Curtain: Recommendations For Neurodiversity Research, Andree Koehler
The Qualitative Report
Researchers have explored neurodiversity in terms of gender, gender identity and expression, masking, and more, yet the focus is often on neurodiversity as synonymous with autism. There remains a challenge to expand the body of neurodiversity research that is broader than autism. In my article, neurodiversity will be discussed as an element of the broad human condition, rather than a singular state or condition of impairment isolated to a portion of the population to delineate the paradigm based on neurological variations from medical and social models. This paper was designed to offer a “how to” for conducting research into neurodiversity …
A Critical Evaluation Of Loss Aversion As The Determinate Of Effort In Compensation Framing, Timothy W. Shields, James Wilhelm
A Critical Evaluation Of Loss Aversion As The Determinate Of Effort In Compensation Framing, Timothy W. Shields, James Wilhelm
ESI Working Papers
A robust finding in managerial accounting research is that participants prefer economically equivalent contracts framed as bonuses to penalties. Another finding is that participants put forth more effort when facing penalty contracts than equivalent bonus contracts. Both results are commonly described as due to loss aversion, an integral portion of Prospect Theory. We test whether loss aversion is correlated with higher effort in an experiment with two parts. In the first part, we elicit individual participants' loss aversion using two measures. In the second part of the experiment, participants choose costly efforts to increase the likelihood of high versus low …

A Laboratory Evaluation Of The Effects Of Empathy Training On Racial Bias, Victoria D. Suarez, Adel C. Najdowski, Angela Persicke, Jonathan Tarbox
Psychology Division Scholarship
The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the efects of behavioral procedures, including relational training and multiple exemplar training on empathic responding of individuals who display racial bias. In particular, this study used a multielement design with fve adult participants to evaluate whether the presentation of relational frames of coordination and distinction between the participants’ values and the values of a person belonging to a group for which a bias existed altered empathic responses toward people belonging to such groups. The results showed empathic responding was higher when relational frames of coordination were presented and lower when relational …

Expanding Healthcare Access For The Undocumented Immigrant Community: The Heal For Immigrant Families Act Of 2023, Perla Torres Estrada
Expanding Healthcare Access For The Undocumented Immigrant Community: The Heal For Immigrant Families Act Of 2023, Perla Torres Estrada
The Gettysburg Journal for Public Policy
When it comes to the topic of universal healthcare, most of us will readily agree that healthcare is a human right. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of who should be granted this right, and if it should be left to the free market to determine access and affordability. Specifically, the political debate on expanding healthcare access to undocumented immigrants in the United States revolve around concerns over costs, legality, and equity. Proponents maintain that it is a human right whereas opponents question the potential burden on taxpayers and the implication for immigration policy. The HEAL …

The Social Aspects Of Sustainable Development: Transit-Oriented Development And Gentrification In Washington, D.C., Vincent C. Hanrahan
The Gettysburg Journal for Public Policy
Since the early-1970s, Transit oriented development (TOD) has been touted as a solution to a variety of urban problems, including traffic congestion, air pollution, and urban poverty. Subsequently, urban scholars have scrutinized “green” development like TOD to measure potential social costs – like the displacement of incumbent neighborhood residents. However, the methodological approach of these empirical studies has come under scrutiny recently, questioning the connection between gentrification and TOD. Following critics’ calls for a better understanding of who may be impacted by TOD, my project addresses previous studies’ methodological shortcomings by focusing on the socioeconomic characteristics of neighborhood residents rather …

Concentration In The Market For Infant Formula: Causes, Symptoms, And Remedies, Clayton Brosend
Concentration In The Market For Infant Formula: Causes, Symptoms, And Remedies, Clayton Brosend
The Gettysburg Journal for Public Policy
This scholarship argues that the widespread shortages resulting from the February 2022 recall of several infant formula brands following the closure of Abbott’s Sturgis plant are emblematic not of an acute market hiccup, but rather of a series of anti-competitive policy measures decades in the making. Using the aforementioned punctuating event as a guidepost, this analysis reviews the critical role that quality regulations, import restrictions, and procurement protocols within the WIC program play on concentration within the market for infant formula.

As funding agencies and publishers reiterate research data sharing expectations (1), many higher-education institutions have demonstrated their commitment to the long-term stewardship of research data by connecting researchers to local infrastructure, with dedicated staffing, that eases the burden of data sharing. Institutional repositories are an example of this investment (2). They provide support for researchers in sharing data that might otherwise be lost: data without a disciplinary repository, data from projects with limited funding, or data that are too large to sustainably store elsewhere. The staffing and technical infrastructure provided by institutional repositories ensures responsible access to information while considering …

Cognitive Impairment And Hearing Loss In The Rio Grande Valley: A Retrospective Study Of Alzheimer's, Dementia, And Mild Cognitive Impairment, Victoria Elizondo, Antoinette Burrell, Chantal Uzoma, Desiree Brewer, Naya Williams, Erica Burrell-Walker, Kelsey Baker
Research Colloquium
Background: Millions of US adults experience underrecognized hearing loss, despite effective treatments. Interestingly, hearing loss has been suggested to be further exacerbated in populations of Alzheimer’s Disease. It is hypothesized that structural and functional features of auditory brain organization, which make it vulnerable to neurodegeneration, may heighten susceptibility to hearing loss, although it is unclear how ethnicity impacts its epidemiology. Here, we sought to address this gap by exploring the association between self-reported hearing loss and cognitive decline in Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients across the Rio Grande Valley (RGV).
Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of the UTHealth RGV electronic …

Casein Gene Polymorphism Of Goat In Thailand, Naparat Naowanat, Duangsmorn Suwattana, Boonnarong Suphap
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The genetic polymorphism of the casein genes and the evaluation of haplotype variability in Saanen and Thai Native breeds in Thailand were investigated. The 23 Saanen and 42 Thai Native goats were genotyped at CSN1S1, CSN2, CSN1S2, and CSN3 loci using sequencing techniques. Three variants of A, C, and E on the CSN1S1 gene locus were demonstrated. The genotypic frequencies of CSN1S1 AA, AC, and AE are shared by over 80% of the population. The CSN2 A and F alleles were observed. The CSN2 genotypes of AA, AF, and FF were indicated with the majority of AF frequency. The 2 …

Evaluation Of Websites Of Prominent Library Association In India :A Webometric Analysis, Rohit Negi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A library association is a non-government body of library professionals who come together for the betterment and development of libraries, library professionals, and the people who can avail themselves of the benefits of libraries. There are currently numerous library associations in India. However, only a small percentage of library associations have functional websites. In this study, we took 20 national library associations that have a proper website where they mention their objectives, vision, and current activities, while others do not have proper websites; some of them use content management sites (World Press, Blogspot, etc.), and others are in physical mode …

Does Virtual Reality Allow For A Reliable Assessment Of Reaction Speed In Mixed Martial Arts Athletes?, Jacek Polechoński, Alan Langer, Petr Stastny, Marcin Zak, Izabela Zając-Gawlak, Adam Maszczyk
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Introduction: The immersive virtual reality (VR) might bring a new reliable approach to diagnosing motor abilities. Therefore, the main goal of this research was to check the intertrial reliability and diagnostic possibility (reaction time, movement time, lateral differences) of VR for upper limb movements in a group of mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes, and to evaluate whether distractors influence the complexity of the whole reaction. Material and methods: Twenty-six MMA athletes (age 27.1 ± 5.4 years, body mass 77.6 ± 9.3 kg, height 179.2 ± 5.7 cm, training experience 6.7±4.3 years) performed two reaction tests for their upper limbs (four …

The Nexus Of Resistance And Neoliberalism In Social Work And Social Welfare: A Scoping Review, Kevin Cherry, Sandra Leotti
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study intervenes in a growing scholarly dialogue about neoliberalism in social work and social welfare by addressing the undertheorized concept of resistance. We conduct a scoping review of 54 articles published from 2008–2023 to answer two questions: how is resistance discussed in relation to neoliberalism, and what are the practice elements of resistance? Findings highlight resistance as a diverse phenomenon enacted in relation to context-specific manifestations of neoliberalism. A range of actors engage in resistance, including individual practitioners, social service organizations and collective action entities, among others. Resistance occurs across all scales of practice and takes many forms, from …

Measuring Consumption Inequality At Household Level In Pakistan 2005-2019, Asadullah Asadullah, Asfandyar Khan
Business Review
Reducing inequality has been the main focus of every country. This study is an attempt to measure consumption expenditure inequality in Pakistan by focusing on food and non-food components. The study uses secondary data to cover surveys from 2005-06 till 2018-19 using decomposed data taken from Household integrated expenditure survey of Pakistan. Gini coefficient has been used to measure inequality. The study finds fluctuating trends in inequality. Overall both food and non-food consumption inequality has slightly decreased but overall food consumption expenditure inequality increased in 2018-19 when we compared the results with year 2015-16. Food consumption inequality remain higher in …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Scholar and scientist Dr. Lucina Uddin (the “Scholar Plaintiff”) brings this antitrust class action to challenge collusion among the world’s six largest for-profit publishers of peer-reviewed scholarly journals: (1) Elsevier B.V.; (2) Wolters Kluwer N.V.; (3) John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; (4) Sage Publications, Inc.; (5) Taylor and Francis Group, Ltd.; and (6) Springer Nature AG & Co. KGaA (collectively, the “Publisher Defendants”). In violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act, the Publisher Defendants conspired to unlawfully appropriate billions of dollars that would have otherwise funded scientific research (the “Scheme”).
The Publisher Defendants’ Scheme has three primary components. First, …

The New Silk Road In Science: China's Science Diplomacy In The Americas, Adam Ratzlaff
The New Silk Road In Science: China's Science Diplomacy In The Americas, Adam Ratzlaff
Research Publications
As U.S. policymakers’ concerns over Chinese influence in the Americas continue to grow, one area that deserves particular attention is Chinese engagement in science and technology. While it is sometimes considered outside the scope of traditional diplomacy, science and technology are increasingly important for economic development and encompass a large range of sectors that are critical to U.S., Chinese, and regional capabilities. These include defense, the green energy transition, and healthcare. Given the importance of these issues, it is unsurprising that China has sought to gain a foothold in this area.

Race And The Manufacturing Workforce: Opportunities To Expand Growth And Equity In A Rebounding Industry Sector, Benjamin Armstrong, Matthew D. Wilson, Nichola J. Lowe
Upjohn Institute Policy Papers
This paper provides an overview of the manufacturing work experience of different racial groups. Our goal is to lend support to “middle-out” policy responses that seek to promote greater economic opportunity across the country through targeted sector growth, including manufacturing, while also bringing together people of all races in support of manufacturing regeneration. By pinpointing persistent inequities in U.S. manufacturing, we hope to embolden policy responses that ensure that as the manufacturing sector rebounds and continues to evolve, its high-paying, good-quality jobs are also more inclusive of workers of color.

What Is Old Is New Again:The Reintegration Ofdresden’S Landscape Intothe Modern German State, Richard Wolfel
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper examines the architecture of Dresden in the era of East/West reunification. Traditional theories of German national development have identified three foci for post-World War II development, the Geopolitics of Nostalgia that seeks to return German national identity to an era prior to World War II, Zero Point thinking that seeks to build a new Germany from the ashes of World War II and critical preservation has sought to preserve some Nazi landscapes in an effort to facilitate discussion on the controversial era. Being an East German city, however, Dresden was isolated from the development of West German identity …

Assessing Climate Changein Alabama Using Climatenormals, Jonathan Herbert, Jeffrey A. D. Caudill
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper uses climate normals to assess historic changes in temperature and precipitation in Alabama. Changes in temperature and precipitation are calculated between climate normals periods at 18 weather stations across the state and for the state as a whole. The earliest climate normals period for which data are available is 1931-60 and the most recent is 1981-2010. Results show that Alabama has gotten cooler and wetter over the whole period of record, particularly in the fall and winter. However, changes between climate normals periods show these trends are reversing

Geographical Variationin The Photosynthesischaracteristics Of Sugarmaple (Acer Saccharum)Lab- And Field-Grownseedlings, David Goldblum, Christa Kennett, Alicia Lisowski
The Geographical Bulletin
A number of recent studies suggest that in light of anthropogenic climate change, sugar maple (Acer saccharum) may not be adapted to persist over much of its current range. We consider variation in the species’ photosynthetic properties across its range. Seeds from Tennessee, Illinois, and Michigan were grown under laboratory conditions and in two experimental plots in Illinois and Michigan forests. In the Michigan forest, seedlings derived from Michigan seeds had significantly higher rates of carbon assimilation than those from Illinois. In the Illinois forest, seedlings from Tennessee had significantly greater carbon assimilation rates and light saturation points than seedlings …
