Covert Imperialism: The Eisenhower Administration And Cuba, Patrick R. Sullivan
Covert Imperialism: The Eisenhower Administration And Cuba, Patrick R. Sullivan
Student Publications
This paper tracks the Eisenhower Administration’s shifting policy towards Cuba and its use of covert imperialism to obtain its objectives. The policy considerations of the United States centered around a convenience for American interests. The support for the Batista regime, despite its oppression, exacerbated anti-American sentiments in the Cuban Revolution and put it on a collision course with American interests. As engagement failed, Cuba nationalized, and tensions escalated, the Eisenhower Administration initiated a campaign of covert imperialism that sought a government more in line with its interests. The covert operations implemented included economic and political sabotage, assassination attempts, and the …

Futurama: An Immersive Experience Of America's Automotive Future, James Miller
Journal of Motorsport Culture & History
General Motors’ Futurama exhibit at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair offered a wildly popular immersive experience of American automobility twenty years in the future. The Fair proclaimed the “Dawn of a New Day” in “The World of Tomorrow” through comprehensive innovative architecture and design, which promoted the primary role of new technology, especially in the field of transportation. Futurama harnessed techniques of theatre and multi-media in unprecedented ways. Its narrow aim was to foster the construction of new highway systems hospitable to the growing population of modern cars. More broadly, Futurama sought to inculcate a new way of thinking …

National Suicide Prevention Month: Acknowledging The Mental Health Crisis In Maine, Emma Vannorsdall
National Suicide Prevention Month: Acknowledging The Mental Health Crisis In Maine, Emma Vannorsdall
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Each year, approximately 47,500 people die by suicide in the United States. It is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S. and the second leading cause for those aged 10-34. Maine falls 20% above the national average and has the highest suicide rate in New England. On average, approximately 227 people in Maine die by suicide each year. These statistics alone are concerning, but the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic threaten to further exacerbate the mental health crisis in our state.
