The Effects Of Daily Media Consumption On Adolescent Girls
The Effects Of Daily Media Consumption On Adolescent Girls
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Media infiltrates society so heavily that it can seem impossible to go an entire hour without viewing several different platforms of media. This paper seeks to explore the effects that daily media consumption has on teenage girls, as well as which types of media can be a foundation for eating disorders, self-esteem problems, loss of identity and heightened jealousy. An additional focus is how much of each media type can be consumed before these effects are evident.Through examining studies that investigate the effects of Facebook, music videos, fashion magazines and television shows, evidence suggests that adolescent girls experience negative effects …
The Influence Of Group Dynamics On Eating Disorders
The Influence Of Group Dynamics On Eating Disorders
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Eating disorders can have a devastating effect on individuals both physically and psychologically. For this reason, it is important to under- stand diverse factors, including group dynamics, that affect the development of eating disorders. I examined the influence of group dynamics on whether eating disorders are viewed as acceptable. Further understanding of social influence may enhance the prevention of eating disorders.
The Use Of Ect As A Standard Treatment For Mdd, George Major
The Use Of Ect As A Standard Treatment For Mdd, George Major
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
The arsenal of effective, standardized treatment options for major depressive disorder (MDD) is shockingly low considering one in three individuals in the Unit- ed States will experience clinical depression during their lifetime (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). MDD is usually limited to drug therapy and cognitive therapy, and alternative treatment methods are often disregarded as ineffective or unethical. This review explores the possibility of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as an alternative standard treatment for MDD. ECT has been used for decades for the treatment of mood disorders, but only recently has the medical community begun to understand how ECT affects the brain. …
A Brief Background Of Pornography And Its Effects On Physical, Psychological, And Emotional Health In Youth, Rebecca Nufer
A Brief Background Of Pornography And Its Effects On Physical, Psychological, And Emotional Health In Youth, Rebecca Nufer
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
The prevalence of pornography has been on the rise for several decades and the effects are becoming more prominent every day due to the accessibility, afford- ability, and lack of accountability associated with pornography use. It has, thereby, become more available to people of all ages, especially children and adolescents. This paper attempts to show that the viewing of pornography by children and adolescents is harmful to their development, both physically and emotionally. Group and individual therapy, as well as more parental control over what is viewed on the Internet, will be suggested as a way of overcoming or preventing pornography …

In September 2016, Nicole Ludwig led a group of her neighbors in Germany to assist newly-arrived Syrian and Afghani refugees. The volunteers collected clothing and toys, organized activities and field trips for the refugee children, and taught them German. Later, the volunteers offered homework support and led library reading groups. For the adult refugees, the volunteers provided cultural assimilation instruction and cooking classes. While there were occasional challenges to working together, the volunteers and refugees fostered a collaborative system and even hosted a Christmas party, during which one elderly Syrian man said, “This is one of the best memories I …

Ketevahi “Katja” is from Georgia. She’s in her late 40’s. She grew up on a farm in the country and became the financial support for her family after her mother died and her father became “emaciated.” When Putin came to power, diplomatic ties deteriorated between Georgia and Russia, which eventually led to war. She fled her country using forged documents and first worked in Turkey but has now lived in Naples for nine years and regularly sends money home to her brother, who cares for their father.
Katja expresses her feelings about war, government, liberty, and what it means to …

When Momo was only nine years old, he returned home to find his parents and his six sisters and four brothers had been killed in their own home. Sometime after that, he and his uncle left Somalia together to live in Yemen. He stayed in Yemen until he was sixteen, but when things became unsafe there, he moved to Libya. He had hoped to get on a boat in Libya to go somewhere for a new life, but he was thrown in prison instead. He was harassed and told to ask his family to send money so that he could …
“No To Disclose Information Sources”: Journalistic Privilege Under Article 19 Of Iccpr, Edward L. Carter
“No To Disclose Information Sources”: Journalistic Privilege Under Article 19 Of Iccpr, Edward L. Carter
Faculty Publications
International law took a significant step in recent years toward protection of journalists’ sources and newsgathering processes. The international law journalistic privilege previously had been upheld by international tribunals, but it was not until 2011 that the United Nations Human Rights Committee adopted an interpretation of freedom of expression that included journalistic privilege. The presence of the privilege within freedom of expression, as recognized in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, is important for several reasons. As part of freedom of expression, the privilege may not be overcome without a showing of necessity and proportionality, …

Grace As Psychotherapy: Suggestions For Therapists With Latter-Day Saint Clients, Matthew R. Draper, James S. Mcgraw, Daniel Sturtevant, Richard D. Draper
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
There is a growing body of literature that shows how perfectionism has tremendous effects on a person’s well-being. Specifically, maladaptive perfectionism continues to have an alarming influence on many individuals’ experiences with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and suicidal ideations. Interestingly, for religious or spiritual individuals, perfectionism is often colored by profound religious themes that further complicate treatment. This paper seeks to explore this issue by introducing the case of Sister Vivi, a Mormon woman who suffered a great deal of depression and anxiety, and eventually a suicide attempt due to perfectionism entwined within her religious beliefs. In cooperation with her …

Mixed-Method Study Of Perfectionism And Religiosity Among Mormons: Implications For Cultural Competence And Clinical Practice, Samuel O. Peer, James S. Mcgraw
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Extending prior research on perfectionism and religiosity, the current study investigated their relation among Latter-day Saints (LDS)–also known as Mormons–through a sequential mixed-methods design. An online community sample of 194 LDS completed the Religiousness Measure-Revised and the Hewitt Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale. Subsequently, six of these participants were interviewed to further explore how perfectionism manifests among Mormons in a qualitative pilot study. Quantitative results demonstrated significant positive correlations between religiosity and perfectionism, but only for self- and other-oriented perfectionism. Qualitative content analysis indicated further how adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism manifest in an LDS context. Implications for culturally competent practice and future …
