Effects Of L.D.S. Doctrine Versus L.D.S. Culture On Self-Esteem
Effects Of L.D.S. Doctrine Versus L.D.S. Culture On Self-Esteem
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
It was hypothesized that BYU students would report a comparatively high self esteem when exposed to LDS doctrine and a lower self esteem when exposed to LDS culture. A self report survey on self esteem was administered to three groups of subjects. One group viewed a stimulus representing LDS doctrine, one viewed a stimulus representing LDS culture, and the control group viewed no stimulus. The hypothesis was supported by the results.
The Halo Effect And Religiosity: Are Attractive People Perceived As More Religious?
The Halo Effect And Religiosity: Are Attractive People Perceived As More Religious?
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
A photograph rating study assessed religiosity perceptions relating to the halo effect. The halo effect is a phenomenon describing the tendency that people have to attribute positive characteristics to those possessing other, unrelated positive characteristics. In the preliminary study, subjects from BYU rated the attractiveness of photographs of college-aged men and women. The primary study used the photographs with the highest and lowest attractiveness ratings. Subjects rated them on a scale of perceived religiosity. As hypothesized, attractive females received higher religiosity ratings then unattractive females. Attractive males received higher religiosity ratings than unattractive males. Attractive females received the highest religiosity …
Ego Depletion: A Contributing Factor Of Hopelessness Depression
Ego Depletion: A Contributing Factor Of Hopelessness Depression
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Ego depletion is mental exhaustion from regulation of conflicting internal desires. We hypothesized that this exhaustion would cause a pessimistic outlook on futureevent thinking. Eighty-one university students were given a simple reading task designed to deplete the egos of half the subjects ( experimental group) and have no effect on the other half ( control group). Following the task they were given the Future Events Scale (FES) to assess how positive or negative they viewed their future. Those who were ego-depleted scored lower on the FES (p< .044) than those who weren't. This suggests that ego depletion is part of the causal chain of hopelessness depression, because those with a lower score on the FES have a more hopeless attitude.
How Accents Affect Perception Of Intelligence, Physical Attractiveness, And Trustworthiness Of Middle-Easter-, Latin-American-, British- And Standard-American-English-Accented Speakers
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Accent Prestige theory states that accents are used as cues to judge characteristics of the accented speaker. In this study, four accents were recorded and later played for the participants: Standard-American, Middle-Eastern, Latin-American, and British. Participants filled out a questionnaire rating perceived intelligence, trustworthiness, and physical attractiveness of the recorded accent , as well as a demographics questionnaire. The authors predict the following: Middle-Eastern- and Latin-accented speakers will be rated lower on the three scales than standard-American-accented speakers, and the British-accented speaker will be rated higher. Statistical significance was obtained on physical attractiveness ratings and on intelligence ratings. p<.05. The results do not support accent prestige theory. The authors call for further research to be conducted to discover the real affect of accent on perception.
An Interview With Dr. Edwin E. Gantt
An Interview With Dr. Edwin E. Gantt
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Dr. Edwin E. Gantt, a BYU Associate Professor of Psychology, is one of the student body's favorite members of the BYU Department of Psychology. He was awarded the Teacher of Honor Award by the Brigham Young University Student Honor Association in 2002. His unique perspective has influenced numerous students to consider psychology from alternative points of view and from within the context of revealed latter-day truths. Dr. Gantt is particularly interested in examining the various (and often problematic) ways in which empathy, altruism and religion have been conceptualized and explained in many of the major schools of contemporary psychology and …

Confused Existentialism As A Factor In College Students' Depression
Confused Existentialism As A Factor In College Students' Depression
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Although “meaning in life” and “existentialism” may be considered ambiguous in psychology, the former term became a psychological construct with implications for psychological well-being. In young adulthood, the transition to college can be a difficult process because of social pressures incident to the adjustment to adulthood, including the need to establish an adult identity. Consequently, meaning in life may be overlooked in the confusion. I argue that a focus on meaning in life can be beneficial for college students in moderating their short- and long-term perspectives, physical health, and emotional health.

Altruism In The Context Of Door-Courtesy Behaviors Among College Students
Altruism In The Context Of Door-Courtesy Behaviors Among College Students
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Altruism has been debated as both selfishly and selflessly motivated Though there are many possible illustrations of altruism in daily activities, a simple model to measure altruism is observing door-holding behaviors. This study observes the door-holding behavior patterns of undergraduate college students, assessing the sex differences and the possibility of an altruistic theme within the observed population. A general sex difference was found illustrating that males hold the door more often than females. Implications of the results are discussed

Discrete Pre-Processing Step Effects In Registration-Based Pipelines, A Preliminary Volumetric Study On T1-Weighted Images, Nathan M. Muncy, Ariana M. Hedges-Muncy, C. Brock Kirwan
Faculty Publications
Pre-processing MRI scans prior to performing volumetric analyses is common practice in MRI studies. As pre-processing steps adjust the voxel intensities, the space in which the scan exists, and the amount of data in the scan, it is possible that the steps have an effect on the volumetric output. To date, studies have compared between and not within pipelines, and so the impact of each step is unknown. This study aims to quantify the effects of preprocessing steps on volumetric measures in T1-weighted scans within a single pipeline. It was our hypothesis that pre-processing steps would significantly impact ROI volume …

When Two Roads Diverge: How Language Barriers Undermine Immigrant Parental Authority
When Two Roads Diverge: How Language Barriers Undermine Immigrant Parental Authority
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
In the United States, immigrant families are one of the fastest growing and most diverse segments of the population (Zhou,1997). Researchers have studied many facets of the immigration process that these families go through, such as acculturation gaps (Weisskirch & Alva, 2002), ethnic identity (Hurtado & Gurin, 1987), youth violence (Boutakidis, Guerra, & Soriano, 2006), and parenting styles (Nguyen, 2008). One construct that surfaces often in these studies is immigrant parental authority; some researchers hypothesize that the immigration experience could shift the authority structure in immigrant homes. The purpose of this literature review is to examine language barriers between immigrant …
Influence Of Mothers On The Development Of Body Dissatisfaction In Daughters
Influence Of Mothers On The Development Of Body Dissatisfaction In Daughters
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Feelings of body dissatisfaction in young women are becoming ever more prevalent. Body dissatisfaction can lead to shame, hinder personal relation- ships, and distract women (ranging from pre-adolescence to early adulthood) from educational, career, or creative pursuits. Mothers are some of the biggest influencers in the development of body dissatisfaction in young adult women. A daughter’s development of body dissatisfaction can be influenced by their mother through direct interactions, indirect interactions, and the emotional quality of the mother-daughter relationship. Direct mother-daughter interactions can negatively influence daughters’ body dissatisfaction through maternal criticism and encouragement to lose weight (Sniezek, 2006; Taniguchi & …
Do You Have Internet Addiction?
Do You Have Internet Addiction?
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
The Internet is a readily available tool that can quickly access a vast range of information, resources, and services. Despite the abundance of resources provided by the Internet, it can prove more detrimental than helpful if we do not wisely manage our personal time on and use of the Internet. This lack of personal time management for the Internet has developed a recently new mental disorder called Problematic Internet Use, but more commonly referred to as Internet addiction. Although this disorder is applicable for all ages, it is found to be a common addiction in adolescents. By examining Internet addiction …
Family Therapy: An Early Intervention In Mitigating Pas
Family Therapy: An Early Intervention In Mitigating Pas
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Children with Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS) potentially suffer from negative indoctrination from at least one parent. This results in damaging the bond between the targeted parent and child and in the creation of an emotionally taxing environment for the child. This clinical challenge calls for a review on the dynamics of PAS and the child caught in the crossfire between parents. PAS is difficult to treat because alienated parents don’t realize the harm they are causing to their child. Hence, it is difficult for the alienating parent to change their approach and negative feeding of the rival parent. Thus, court-ordered …
Adolescent Ocd: Healing Through Parent Integration
Adolescent Ocd: Healing Through Parent Integration
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Adolescent obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is often misdiagnosed and not effectively treated due to a lack of knowledge and resources. One of the main factors that contributes to these misdiagnoses is that there are a limited number of trained clinicians who specialize in adolescent treatment. Comorbidity among the diagnosis of OCD in adolescents also adds to the lack of effective treatment specific to OCD. Often OCD symptoms can remain hidden as these symptoms often manifest as heightened versions of normal behavior in response to normal thoughts and feelings, which may increase during puberty. Effective treatment of adolescent OCD decreases when …
Differences In Disorders: Secondary Disabilities In The Diagnosis Of Adhd And Fasd
Differences In Disorders: Secondary Disabilities In The Diagnosis Of Adhd And Fasd
Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology
Fetal alcohol syndrome disorder (FASD) is a syndrome affecting some children whose mothers consumed alcohol while pregnant. The effects of FASD are based on genetic predisposition, level of maternal alcohol consumption, fetal age during alcohol consumption and the over-all health of the mother and fetus. Psychologists have compared FASD with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and found that they differ in two major areas: motor skills and cognitive performance. Without recognizing differences and diagnosing the disorders correctly, doctors may allow symptoms to go untreated. These untreated symptoms may lead to secondary disabilities and result in incorrectly prescribed medications. With more research, …
