Boom And Bust: A Look At The Changing Economic And Demographic Profile Of Grand County, Utah, Greg B. Hall Feb 2014

Boom And Bust: A Look At The Changing Economic And Demographic Profile Of Grand County, Utah, Greg B. Hall

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Inter-Mountain West counties who historically have tied their economic livelihood to the exploitation of primary resources have been susceptible to cycles of boom and bust. The history of Grand County, Utah, depicts this precise paradigm. In the 1950’s, when a young Texan discovered uranium in the resource rich Colorado Plateau, north of Moab, economic prosperity and a population explosion came the way of Grand County. Mines in the county processed 95% of all uranium ores for the nation. The population reached 10,000 people, and wealth flowed from the pits of this rich resource. The market lulled soon thereafter, and intermittent …

Spectrographic Acoustic Cue Analyses For Foreign Accent Reduction Speech Therapy, Lance W. Porter Feb 2014

Spectrographic Acoustic Cue Analyses For Foreign Accent Reduction Speech Therapy, Lance W. Porter

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In a world where more and more opportunities are opening up on an international level, it has become increasingly important to be able to communicate effectively. Accent reduction therapy was developed to help people reduce foreign or regional accents that would otherwise put them at a disadvantage. International students who are speakers of English as a second language (ESL), upon starting school in the United States, will often struggle because of strong accented speech in the already competitive world of academics. Strong accents can adversely effect their ability to communicate and succeed in the classroom. Upon graduation, the ability to …

Effects Of Handedness And Gender On The Surface Area Of The Human Corpus Callosum: A Preliminary Study Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, James B. Pinkston

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Several studies have found differences in the human corpus callosum across gender and handedness (Aboitiz, Scheibel, Fisher, & Zaidel, 1992; Burke & Yeo, 1994; Cowell, eta!., 1993; de Lacoste-Utamsing & Holloway, 1982; Denenberg, eta!., 1991; Habib, eta!., 1991; Johnson & Bigler, eta!., 1994; Johnson & Farnworth, eta!., 1994; Laissy, et al .. 1993; Potter & Graves, 1988; Steinmetz, eta!., 1992; Witelson, 1989; Witelson, 1991; Witelson & Goldsmith, 1991). A myriad of others claim that these differences do not exist (Byne, eta!., 1988; Clarke, Kraftsik, VanDer Laos, & Innocenti, 1989; Hines, eta!., 1992; Kertesz, Polk, Howell, & Black, 1987; Laissy, et …

Memory And Aging, Carlos T. Jackson Feb 2014

Memory And Aging, Carlos T. Jackson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For many years now, the field of neuropsychology has been looking for connections between brain and behavior. We can now determine that the brain is responsible for most, if not all, of our physical, emotional and even cognitive functioning. It is indeed the “master organ.” IUs my desire to be able to further the work that has already been done in this field in an effort to finally be able to discover exactly how this miraculous organ works, specifically in terms of how it relates to cognitive functioning.

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Child And Adolescent Group Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analytic Review, Corey D. Randall, Dr. Matthew J. Haag Feb 2014

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Child And Adolescent Group Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analytic Review, Corey D. Randall, Dr. Matthew J. Haag

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Effective treatment of children and adolescents in psychotherapy is crucial to alleviating the distress and suffering resulting from psychopathology (Kazdin, 1993). Dysfunctional behavior, if not appropriately addressed, can result in irreversible developmental outcomes. The importance of evaluating treatment to address childhood difficulties becomes even more vital in a managed health care system that stresses accountability and demands evidence of progress. It is for this reason that an examination of the current treatment approaches and techniques must be undertaken.

Inhibition Of Lordosis In The Male, Paul C. Butler, G. J. Block

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study was designed to examine the effects of exogenous gonadal hormones on the inhibition of lordotic behavior in estradiol benzoate (EB) primed and non-primed male rats. Adult male rats were gonadectomized and given one of four treatments, blank (Bk), testosterone (T), progesterone (P), or testosterone plus progesterone (T + P). Animals were then given 5 pg EB for three days prior to testing for lordotic behavior.

An Exhibition On Casas Grandes At The Museum Of Peoples And Cultures, Jeffrey Kent Romney Feb 2014

An Exhibition On Casas Grandes At The Museum Of Peoples And Cultures, Jeffrey Kent Romney

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the Fall of 1993 I submitted an application for a research grant through your office and received a $1,000 scholarship on December 9, 1993. My proposed project was to design an exhibition on Casas Grandes at the Museum of Peoples and Cultures here at BYU. The Museum holds a large collection of unique artifacts from this culture. The idea for an exhibit using this collection first carne to mind after doing some research on these collections during the Summer of 1993. Starting in January 1994, therefore, I began the process of research necessary to formulate the informative background for …

The Civil War: A “Poor Man’S Fight?”, David Blood Feb 2014

The Civil War: A “Poor Man’S Fight?”, David Blood

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Civil War has often been described as a “rich man’s war-poor man’s fight,” suggesting that the war was waged with disproportionate human losses to the lower class. The losses suffered by the nation were huge, but the charge that such losses were disproportionately born by the poor or the immigrants as a result of some Intentional discrimination makes such losses even more tragic and unjustified. Since the beginning of the Union draft, this question has been an issue of debate. In 1863, the debate was highly partisan, with the Democratic party accusing the current Republican majority and administration of …

A Comparative Study Of Hopi-Navajo Land Use Management, And The Environmental Impact Of The 1992 Proposal For Settlement Of The Hopi-Navajo Dispute, Benjamin A. Thomson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

To introduce this research summary, I would like to include a brief background to my research topic. Since the creation of the Hopi and Navajo reservations in 1880, these two tribes have disputed the use of the land. By 1974 the Navajo, living on a reservation surrounding that of the Hopi, had moved on to a considerable portion of Hopi land under the provision of a Joint Use Area which had been created in 1962. After the Hopi sued the Navajo, a federal judge ordered the relocation of the Navajo, once again, and a return of the land to the …

Political Participation Of Latinos In Utah, John D. Smart Feb 2014

Political Participation Of Latinos In Utah, John D. Smart

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My research project was to survey the political participation of Latinos in Utah. In order to conduct my research, I concentrated mainly on conducting surveys and interviews with Latino leaders and ordinary Latino citizens; I also did a great deal of library research. I participated in the Washington Seminar during Winter Semester 1994, and I was able to interview staffers for Senator Hatch, Rep. Orton, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC). I was also able to speak with community and state leaders in Provo and Salt Lake City. My project has great application because Utah has more Latinos than all …

Religiosity As A Moderating Factor Of Correspondence Bias, Cory Anderson, Erin G. Longaker Feb 2014

Religiosity As A Moderating Factor Of Correspondence Bias, Cory Anderson, Erin G. Longaker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Correspondence bias, also known as the fundamental attribution error, is the tendency for an observer to overestimate an actor’s personal responsibility for behavior and underestimate situational influences. In other words, a perceiver is generally biased to infer that behavior corresponds to an underlying personal disposition of an actor rather than the constraints of the environment. This phenomenon is a robust area of study in clinical and social psychology (Jones, 1990). However, some research has found there are moderating factors of correspondence bias. For example, D’Agostino and Fincher-Kiefer (1992) conducted a study investigating the relationship between cognitive style and the tendency …

Summary Of The Creative Language Modeling Project, Trent M. Pehrson, Dr. Cynthia Hallen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Creative language modeling (CLM) is a method of teaching linguistics principles to high school level students. In CLM, students learn about language principles by systematically designing an artificial language. The premise of CLM is that students can learn and retain language principles more readily when such principles are associated with creative experiences that give the student a personal stake in the learning process.

Social Changes And Women’S Issues Of Coimbatore India, Dana Diana Bowen Feb 2014

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I demonstrated in my application for The Research and Creative Work Scholarship last Fall semester that specific patterns of transition in women’s roles and statuses occur in evolving societies. Examples of this evolution were illustrated in the American, !Kung San, and Chinese societies. I further hypothesized that these same patterns of evolution are also occurring in India and possibly other countries.

The Value Of Life: A Contingent Valuation Study Of Risk Avoidance And Utah County Air Pollution, Christopher Michael Lee Feb 2014

The Value Of Life: A Contingent Valuation Study Of Risk Avoidance And Utah County Air Pollution, Christopher Michael Lee

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While prices established in competitive markets provide the most traditional and widely accepted valuation of goods and services, many commodities cannot be valued with price studies because no competitive market exists for those commodities. Economist have developed some methods by which valuations for non-marketed commodities can be estimated. These non-market methods are significant because they can estimate values for public goods, non-traded goods and services, and other items or amenities which the market does not or cannot allocate.

Adult Offenders And The Family Profile Ii Scale: A Retrospective Assessment Of Prisoner And Non-Prisoner Families Of Origin, Matthew N. I. Oliver, Shirley Klein

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Past research on families consistently indicates that parents of delinquents are usually poor managers of income (1), and likely to use excessively lax or excessively strict discipline (2). Although much is known about the families of juvenile delinquents, little research has been done on adult offenders’ families of origin. The purpose of this study is to explore family of origin profiles of prisoners and non-prisoners and evaluate how those differences relate to the profile of juvenile delinquents’ family of origin. More specifically, this study explores the following hypotheses: Hypothesis 1: Non-prisoners’ families of origin will reflect more fictional financial management …

The Effects Of Employment On Women’S Life Satisfaction And Maiiital Quality, Jared L. Bleak Feb 2014

The Effects Of Employment On Women’S Life Satisfaction And Maiiital Quality, Jared L. Bleak

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The experience I had in researching and writing on the effects of employment on women’s life satisfaction and marital quality was a wonderful capstone to my education at Brigham Young University. The Research and Creative Work award I received made this experience possible. With the award I was able to decrease the number of hours I worked at my job and increase the time spent on my project. This extra time was essential in completing the research and writing the project required.

Developing A Normative Sample Of Hispanic Youth Using The Spanish Youth Outcome Questionnaire, Michelle Nuttall, Dr. Gary Burlingame Feb 2014

Developing A Normative Sample Of Hispanic Youth Using The Spanish Youth Outcome Questionnaire, Michelle Nuttall, Dr. Gary Burlingame

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Youth Outcome Questionnaire (Y-OQ) was developed by a group of professors at Brigham Young University to offer professionals in psychology an outcome measure for children between the ages of 4 and 17. This measure was to be easy to administer, quick to fill out and score, and cost effective. The main attribute it had to contain was a sensitivity to change that would allow the clinician and others the ability to track progress and monitor change in a specific individual. The result of this endeavor was the Youth Outcome Questionnaire, a 64 item parent report measure that takes about …

Group And Gender Differences In Total Recall And Serial Position Effect For Pictorial, Textual, And Contextual Stimuli, Kirk M. Lunnen Feb 2014

Group And Gender Differences In Total Recall And Serial Position Effect For Pictorial, Textual, And Contextual Stimuli, Kirk M. Lunnen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Understanding how different modes of informational presentation can affect memorability is of great importance from advertising to education and in other disciplines. In education, for example, it relates to important issues such as determining the most effective strategies for increasing students’ vocabularies. In advertising, it means the difference between product recognition (and consequent consumption) and product failure. The search for a method of presentation that can maximize this memorability has been the object of numerous researchers (Esser, Die, Seholm, & Pebley, 1979; Lippman & Shanahan, 1974; Bower, 1970; Paivio, 1969).

Our research was conducted within a larger project designed to facilitate language and social skills in children with SLI. Fifty-six subjects between the ages of 6 and 11 participated in this project. Eight of these subjects were children with SLI, and the remaining forty-eight were typically developing. Each of the children with SLI was paired with two typically developing peers of the same gender to form a triad of children. Each triad worked on four different cooperative tasks.

Neurophysiological Substrates Of Cocaine Addiction, Dr. Scott Steffensen Feb 2014

Neurophysiological Substrates Of Cocaine Addiction, Dr. Scott Steffensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The main objective of this study was to characterize the role of GABA neurons in the ventral tegmental area in cocaine addiction. Research in my lab is dedicated to the elucidation of brain substrates underlying drug addiction. Elder Boyd K. Packer has stated, “It is my conviction, and my constant prayer, that there will come through research, through inspiration to scientists if need be, the power to conquer narcotic addiction through the same means which cause it.”(Packer 1989). This plea from Elder Packer is emblazoned on a poster at the entrance to my laboratory to remind us of …

Thirty Thousand Regressions On Trade: A Sensitivity Analysis, Frank Mcintyre, Dr. Kerk Phillips Feb 2014

Thirty Thousand Regressions On Trade: A Sensitivity Analysis, Frank Mcintyre, Dr. Kerk Phillips

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As the world economy becomes more integrated, questions of trade and living standards become more relevant. Developing countries see the standard of living in the industrialized nations and wonder how they can achieve the same level of prosperity. One viewpoint is that a crucial part of development for the nations of the world is access to the large consumer markets of the United States and Europe. Developing countries want open borders that will allow them to sell competitively in the industrialized nations. Many people in these industrialized countries worry about what kind of effect such open access will have on …
