Exploring The Relationship Between Organized Sports Participation And Alcohol Experimentation In Children Aged 9 And 10, Kristina Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Children experimenting with alcohol is a phenomenon that has been occurring for decades, with the assumption that most children begin to experiment during adolescence. Research has addressed children over the age of 12 in numerous studies; however, little research has been directed at children between the ages of 9 and 10. In this study, the relationship between alcohol experimentation and sports participation was explored in children between the ages of 9 and 10 years old through a social learning theory lens. The study sample consisted of children aged 9-10 from across the country participating in the ABCD study. Many factors …

Change Is Possible: Implementing Assessment Of Library Instruction With The Help Of Change Management Theories, Carrie Jedlicka Jun 2024

Change Is Possible: Implementing Assessment Of Library Instruction With The Help Of Change Management Theories, Carrie Jedlicka

Publications and Research

Kingsborough Community College Library was tasked with formally assessing our instructional sessions, in order to align with the college’s evaluation of students’ information literacy skills. We formed a working committee and soon realized that conducting assessment would necessitate that librarians make changes to their instructional work and routines. To make this transition more manageable and to help create buy-in among librarians, the committee has begun rolling out assessment incrementally, drawing inspiration from different change management models. This poster will describe the steps taken in our assessment’s soft launch, change management theories that we’ve found helpful, and our successes and challenges. …

In the United States, smoking rates increase with greater acculturation among Mexican-origin women, but not among men. Conversely, greater acculturation is associated with higher likelihood of quitting among Mexican-origin men who smoke, but not among women who smoke. Long-standing speculation is that adoption of smoking social norms in the U.S. that are less restrictive for women and more restrictive for men compared to smoking social norms in Mexico may account for these patterns. However, it is unknown whether persons who smoke actually perceive such differential norms. The current study characterized smoking social norms in the U.S. and Mexico among Spanish-speaking …

Theory-Based Science Communication At Comic Cons, Lisa Lundgren, Emily Slater, Man Zhang, Kadie Kunz, Gabriel-Philip Santos

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

The majority of research concerning science communication happens in spaces where people already have a vested interest in or knowledge of science, such as museums and science cafes. Thus, there is a gap in understanding what theory-based science communication looks like in non-science-centered spaces. This qualitative research study, which featured cosplaying science communicators at comic conventions, offers insights into what science communication practices occur within everyday spaces. We conducted observations of and semi-structured interviews with 15 cosplaying scientists, examining how they utilized effective framing and narrative structuring when communicating science at comic cons in cosplay. Across 700 coded utterances, cosplaying …

Missed Exits: Causal Mechanisms Influencing Militarized Interstate Dispute Escalation In Latin America, Colton Arciniaga

Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals

Research on militarized interstate disputes (MIDs) and the reasons for their escalation to interstate war is sparse at the global level and the regional level in Latin America. This thesis contributes new research on militarized interstate dispute escalation in Latin America. In this project, I ask: how do differences in conflict escalation indicators between states affect whether a Latin American country will participate in a Militarized Interstate Dispute that escalates to the use of force? To answer this question, I conduct a case study utilizing the most similar cases analysis approach to compare the cases of the 1995 MID between …

Social Bonding Theory And Early 20th Century Islamophobia, Tseleq Yusef Jun 2024

Social Bonding Theory And Early 20th Century Islamophobia, Tseleq Yusef

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Contemporary discussions of Islamopobia are oftentimes couched within discussions of national security concerns that follow the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Further, the victims of Islamophobia are typically situated within discussions revolving around Muslim-immigrant, or immigrant-descended communities. However, a closer examination of the history of both Islam in America, and national security policy reveal that not only does the presence of Islamophobia pre-date 9/11, it has its roots within, and has worked alongside Jim Crow racism. This project 1) explores the earliest forms of Islamophobia in America as an early 20th century, and distinctly anti-black phenomenon, while simultaneously 2) applying social …

The Distant Present (Faraway, So Close!), Jean-Paul Addie Jun 2024

The Distant Present (Faraway, So Close!), Jean-Paul Addie

USI Publications

Datta’s (2024) concept of ‘distant time’ offers a multi-faceted lens to interrogate the construction of urban futures. In this commentary, I critically examine how the concept is framed and mobilized, drawing attention to issues of temporal extensiveness, topological temporality, and embodied time. While recognizing the analytic power of distant time to expose techniques of temporal distancing and document deep connections between social, ecological, and technological times, I argue that open questions remain regarding the parameters of temporal justice and possibilities for collective political action beyond temporal arbitrage.

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

This review explores the relationship between political participation and public policy. Existing literature has explored the impact of policies on political participation, yet a predominant focus has been on studies conducted in Western nations. There is a significant gap in the literature when it comes to developing nations, especially concerning marginalized communities. Racial disproportionality remains a historical issue in child welfare systems. It was important for this research to focus on characteristics, professional qualifications, and racial attitudes of those in child welfare decision-making roles to examine how they contributed to racism. To address the gap in the literature, the relationship between years of experience, race/ethnicity, risk of harm, advocacy, racial attitudes, and decision-making among child protection were examined to develop a greater understanding of the ongoing issues and development of reforming the child welfare decision-making process to capture racism among child protection workers. Increasing equality in the child welfare system will benefit …
