Johannes Knudsen: The Cultural Context Of His Youth, Aage V. Knudsen

The Bridge

The editor of The Bridge asked me to describe the early life of Johannes Henrik Vilstrup Knudsen: his childhood in Tyler, Minnesota, his youth in Denmark, and his interaction with Danes and Danish Americans. My brother's life spanned from 1902 to 1982, but it was the cultural context of his youth that molded his character. Many years ago, Johannes presented me with a copy of Danish Rebel, his book about Grundtvig. He inscribed it with these words, "Lest we forget." This expressed his love and the obligation he felt for the rich heritage he received. That heritage became his lodestar.

In the fall of 1927 Johannes Knudsen began what was to be a lifelong teaching career. For the next eight years he was to teach at Grand View College and in the theological seminary there. He taught courses in Danish as well as in Scandinavian literature. In the Seminary his specialty was Church History. It was far from his first contact with Grand View. He had lived there as a youth, from 1912 until 1915, while his father was president of that institution. Later he attended the high school department there. An Incentive-Based Wild Horse Management System On Public Rangeland, Ray G. Huffaker, James E. Wilen, B. Gardner Delworth

This paper explores an incentive-based management system to induce federal grazing permittees to choose sustained cattle stocking strategies which accommodate government-set wild horse numbers and nongrazing uses. Particular attention is paid to constraints imposed by federal grazing statutes. The proposed system employs increased livestock grazing fees to induce permittees to provide increased vegetation for consumption by wild horses and nongrazing uses. The negative impact of increased fees on permittee wealth is counterbalanced with compensatory transfer payments. Taken together, grazing fees and compensation payments induce multiple-use compliance by permittee-stewards and keep their discounted livestock profits intact at some predetermined level.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effect of a parent-teen structured family facilitation program (PAT). The study compared pre and post workshop scores on a number of dependent variables in a workshop, a replication of the workshop, and a comparison group.
Analysis of the data revealed no significant differences from pretest to post test in either of the groups. However when the groups were combined there were some statistically significant differences from pretest to post test. The fathers increased in their ability to transfer control while the mothers decreased in kindness. A few post hoc analyses …

Many agricultural communities have developed in Utah since the first settlement, but many no longer exist today. Some of these early communities experienced a "boom and bust," while others struggled for several years and were eventually abandoned. Johns Valley is a good example of these historic communities, as it experienced rapid growth and times of success and prosperity, yet it struggled and was eventually abandoned.
The situation in Johns Valley, from its early settlement to its demise, demonstrates the hope of the people who settled there and their efforts to make Johns Valley a productive and successful area. History also …

Television news contains factors of time constraints and deadlines that add pressures to the underlying rules of objectivity, fairness, and bias. This study seeks to determine if the elements of "responsible journalism" dissipate in television news coverage of a highly significant, developing news story. In other words, how well do the rules hold up under pressure? The momentous story selected for observation was the Mark Hofmann bombings in Salt Lake City, Utah. The focus centered on the coverage by local stations rather than the network television news operations.

A few years ago it was mostly economists, notably those of a libertarian stripe who were advocating voluntary market exchanges of water in the West. Now these exchanges, or transfers as they are sometimes referred to, are being unabashedly recommended by water users, politicians, bureaucrats, and even environmental organizations, who have come to see their value for achieving a more efficient water allocation. Water markets are an idea whose time has finally arrived.

The gamut of futuristic visions in library literature—from optimistic to pessimistic, from realistic to fanciful. Contradictory answers to recurring questions are found: Can we finally say goodbye to Gutenberg? Will the library card be replaced by the telephone credit card? Will book ownership give way entirely to information access. Will "books without pages" and "libraries without walls" necessarily lead to librarians without jobs? Is it possible to set timetables? After past crystal ball gazers are compared, contrasted, and critiqued, positive plans for progress are suggested.

The Bureau of Reclamation recently announced that its prime mission since 1902-building dams to make the desert bloom in the American West-is pretty much complete. While never really admitting that its newer projects have been economically infeasible, Bureau management has at last recognized that the days of the big public water project are gone. The Bureau now plans to turn its attention and resources to other more pressing problems, such as helping other agencies with construction projects needed to cope with hazardous waste.

The relationship between doctors and patients in the medical and health field is a topic of recurrent discussion today. The topic is of immense interest because of the questions raised about value received for services purchased and because of the large amount of economic resource consumed. The size of the stakes are such that the debate will grow in the near future until some solution is found to remedy the value and cost for service dilemma.

Danish-American ethnicity has traditionally been studied by examining the literature, religion, social and educational institutions, and business enterprises of Danes in America. In general researchers have looked to Fine Arts and Culture to understand the Danish ethnic identity. But examining only Culture and Art yields an incomplete understanding of culture and art. Danish ethnic culture in America consists primarily of the non-elitist traditions and arts of individuals' everyday lives rather than the contributions of the elite, and the discipline of folklore can provide a more complete concept of Danish heritage. Many years ago, possibly when I was seventeen years of age, my grandfather, Rasmus B. Nielsen (affectionately called R.B.) asked me if I would write the account of his experiences as a young man emigrating from Denmark in 1878, with Dannebrog, Nebraska as his destination and future home. I said I would. We had several sessions at the kitchen table in his home near Nysted by Dannebrog, Nebraska. He sat in his captain's chair, and I in a straight-backed kitchen chair. These are some memories of a woman whose life spanned a whole century, from 1886 to 1986. As a Danish immigrant in Minneapolis, she saw the changes in the Danish community from the time when the newcomers clung to their heritage, until today, two or three generations later when almost no one speaks in the mother tongue. Her special gift for story telling, her acting ability, and her amazing memory of poetry made her a very unusual, lovable person. Her outgoing personality and friendliness touched the lives of countless people.

It is not often that we have the pleasure of reviewing the biography of a politically prominent Danish-American; in this case Hjalmar Petersen of Minnesota. To our knowledge Petersen was the only Danish-born governer of any of the United States -- Minnesota. The fact alone creates some interest in Petersen among Americans of Danish descent and to the Danish American Heritage Society. A Demographic Examination Of Household Heads In Salt Lake City, Utah, 1850-1870, Larry W. Draper

This study examines the demographic characteristics of household heads in Salt Lake City, Utah at three points in its history: 1850, 1860, and 1870. Data was compiled on population growth, nativity, sex, age, occupation, wealth, and persistence from the United States Census for those years.

The data shows that between 1850 and 1870 the makeup of Salt Lake City household heads changed dramatically from predominately American-born to predominately foreign-born. This change in the nativity of household heads over time significantly influenced several demographic characteristics including the location of immigrant settlement, occupational tendencies, and a high level of stratification of real …
