The Bridge

Jens Jensenwas born May 2, 1892 on a farm outside of Olgod, Denmark in central Jutland. When he was nine years old his mother died (of pregnancy toxemia), leaving five children. Jens Jensen then lived with his neighbors and relatives Kirstin and Hans Christiansen. He worked on the farm which required much labor since the Christianden family took on, in addition, the operation and management of a nearby creamery (Lindbjerg).

My father's family were among those thousands of Danes who made their decision to emigrate to America in the last decade of the nineteenth century. On March 28, 1893, Peter Iversen and wife Kirstine and children Christine, 12 years, Karen, 10, Katherine, 8, Marie, 6, Mikkel, 5 and Laura, not quite 3 years old, sailed from Copenhagen on the "Thingvalla." The came first to Sioux CIty, Iowa, where Kirstine's brother Graves Mikkelsen had settled earlier. The year 1987 marked the 70th anniversary of the sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States of America. With the sale of the three small islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, Denmark had disposed of all her tropical colonies, which at one time had included possessions on the Gold Coast in Africa, the present Ghana, and in southeastern India, most importantly Trankebar.

Karl Jensen wrote the following diary in Danish during his journey to America in 1903. He was born in Lynga in Jutland in 1873, and from 1903 until his death in 1948 he was a chicken-farmer in Enumclaw, Washington. In the diary he take considerable pride in the fact that during the entire voyage he did not suffer from seasickness. The reason for this is that as a young man he served as a seamannon merchant ships in the Mediterranean and Pacific. On one voyage his ship entered Puget Sound. During the evening of August 21, 1918, the community of Tyler, Minnesota, was struck by a severe tornado. Many people were killed, many more injured, and the damage to property was tremendous. The letter, written in Danish, which follows is a first-hand account of what that thriving community looked like after the storm. In some places this account is gruesome, in other places it is subtly humorous, and in all places it is a graphic presentation of the havoc that can be wreaked in a few moments.

There was a strong interest in psychology at Brigham Young University at the turn of the century; the third president was a psychologist and a number of distinguished psychologists regularly visited the campus. An outstanding young scholar who was destined to become the only Mormon president of the American Psychological Association started a vigorous academic psychology program in those early years, but he left the university because of a controversy over his teachings. Using Anasazi Redwares To Reconstruct Prehistoric Trade Networks, James R. Allison

Anasazi redware ceramics were widely traded from relatively small areas which specialized in their production. They form one stylistic sequence, but exhibit technological variation due to differences in resource availability. This variation allows most redwares to be traced to specific manufacturing areas, a crucial step in the reconstruction of trade networks and alliances. However, because few archaeologists have worked with the redware production areas, the current typology is misleading and the redwares are often mistyped. As a result, patterns of distribution and the behaviors that created them are obscured.

Couple Cohesion: Differences Between Clinical And Non-Clinical Mormon Couples, Colleen Margaret Peterson

This thesis examined the differences between 30 clinical and 30 non-clinical Mormon married couples on the perceived and ideal cohesion scores on the FACES III family typology instrument. Two three-way analyses of variance were done to examine these differences. the results provided evidence that there were significant differences between cohesion scores in clinical and non-clinical couples Both the clinical and non-clinical ideal scores fell close to the enmeshed end of the cohesion dimension of the Circumplex Model. The mean perceived cohesion scores, however, showed a difference between the clinical and non-clinical couples. The clinical couple mean scores fell in the …

The first section of this thesis is a diachronic examination of second person pronouns in English with special focus on variations in usage such as pronominal shifting between thou (and related forms) and ye (and related forms), as well as an examination of the second person pronoun usage in the English Bible (especially the King James Version) with a similar focus. From the thirteenth century on variations in usage have been common.

It was hypothesized by Olson and his colleagues (Olson, et al., 1983) that "Mormons" were more likely to be enmeshed than many other cultural/religious groups. The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) scored significantly more often in the enmeshed category of the cohesion dimension of the Circumplex Model, using FACES III data, than the norming sample for the FACES III instrument. The study also examined the level of satisfaction that the Mormon sample expressed for their level of cohesion. Data from 61 L.D.S. married couples living …

The Test Of English As A Foreign Language Sample Test As A Measure Of Adolescent Language Ability, Paul Gardiner Osborn

Relative performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language Sample Test (TOEFL-ST) was explored in sixty native English speaking high school students. Subjects also were administered the Fullerton Language Test for Adolescents and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test Revised. The TOEFL-ST was not difficult for this population, indicating that TOEFL tests taken by foreign speaking college students probably assess a level of native English competency well below the high school level. The three tests, including subtests, appear to measure a wide array of subdomains of language competency. The data do not support the conclusion that any of these …

The historical marker placed along Highway 35 near Luck, Wisconsin, commemorating the founding of Wisconsin's first cooperative creamery-the Luck Creamery Company-on the north shore of nearby Little Butternut Lake, West Denmark, notes that "the first Buttermaker was a Danish woman who made butter in large wooden churns." A brief history of this pioneering Danish woman was provided by her son, Ansgar Ravnholt, a few years before his death in 1964.1 This author, a grandson, has contributed additional details from more recently discovered records.

Enok Mortensen' s literary career was strangely divided. In the 1930s he published a play and three books of fiction in a first burst of activity that began after most other Scandinavian immigrant authors had ceased to publish or had died. After 1936, however, he abruptly ceased to publish fiction except for scattered short stories , and for many years wrote historical works in English instead. In English too was his charming autobiographical account of A Danish Boyhood in 1981. Who would have expected, then, that his last book would return to the novel form after nearly half a century …

The separate histories of foreign-language missions present a special challenge to students of American church history. Descendants of the immigrants, more and more of mixed ancestry, lack the ability to read and translate material published in the language of their forebears. To make matters more difficult, the children and grandchildren of the pioneers often shun the tedious work of research and writing. Their handicaps apply to the offspring of all foreignspeaking peoples in America. Of the nineteenth-century immigrants, the Danes come to mind.

This song is about two little blueeyed children who press their ' noses against the window pane as they eagerly await their father's homecoming. It ends with a happy rush to the door when they hear him approaching, and the words change to a joyous shout of "Her Kommer Far"--Here Comes our Father.

Children of Danish Roots is a translation by Willard R. Garred of Stammens B0rn, an article that appeared originally in the 1931 issue of the "Ryslinge Julebog," a Christmas magazine of the Ryslinge Folk High School, Ryslinge, Denmark. The article was written by L. C. Laursen when he lived in the western Nebraska community at Mirage Flats near Hay Springs. After his arrival in the community he named it Ryslinge, a name generally accepted by the settlers and their friends.
