Masterworks Festival Provides Summer Entertainment, Mark D. Weinstein

Music will fill the air this summer at the annual MasterWorks Festival, hosted by Cedarville University. The festival, which begins June 19 and concludes July 17, is an intensive, four-week program for advanced students of the classical performing arts.

Each year, 250 students from around the world participate in this unique festival that combines artistic excellence and biblical teaching. The opening concert is a faculty recital at on Sunday, June 19 in the Dixon Ministry Center’s Recital Hall. Faculty recitals will be held each Sunday at 7:30 p.m. throughout the festival.

Cedarville University’s solar boat team got a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s most innovative vehicles when Solar Impulse 2, an experimental solar-powered aircraft, landed at Dayton International Airport on Saturday evening.

Although the plane was not made available for public viewing, the solar boat team was granted special access at the request of Dayton mayor Nan Whaley. In addition to getting a tour of the aircraft, the solar boat team was also able to meet the crew of Solar Impulse 2 and ask questions about the plane.

The Cedarville University School of Nursing is expanding its online Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) program by reinstating a revamped nurse educator track.

Currently, the online M.S.N. program has 63 students and offers a family nurse practitioner (FNP) track that focuses on primary care for people of all ages as well as an online global public health nursing (GPHN) track that focuses on population-based care locally and globally.

The nurse educator track is designed to prepare students for a career in an academic setting, allowing them to help prepare future nurses to work in the health care industry.

Substance abuse is a growing concern in the United States. That’s why Ohio Governor John Kasich has made it a priority to put in place programs that can slow it down in the Buckeye State.

The initiative “Start Talking!” is a youth drug prevention campaign created by the governor and First Lady Karen Kasich to prevent drug use before it ever starts. Based on national research, children are 50 percent less likely to use drugs when their parents or a trusted adult talks with them about drug use.

According to a 2015 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, electronic cigarettes have surpassed traditional cigarettes as the most commonly used tobacco product among high school students.

A group of four students at Cedarville University began researching the chemical compounds in two brands of e-cigarette flavoring in January to see if they contain harmful ingredients. A previous study at Marquette University found that e-cigarette flavorings, commonly called “juice,” contain harmful ingredients such as diacetyl and 2,3-pentanedione–both have been linked to lung disease.

The Shell Eco-Marathon challenges students to design, build and drive ultra-energy-efficient vehicles. The Motor City was the backdrop to this competition that featured universities and high schools throughout the world.

By the time the competition concluded, Cedarville University’s super-mileage car team continued its demonstration of excellence in developing fuel-efficient vehicles at the 2016 Shell Eco-Marathon Americas with a second place finish in the Urban Concept division and sixth place in the Prototype Gasoline category. The event was held April 23-24 event in downtown Detroit.

Objective: To identify risk factors for concussion among men's and women's college soccer athletes, and determine the likelihood of concussion based on those risk factors. Design and Setting: A short electronic survey was sent out to NCAA Division II universities in Ohio. Survey questions included demographics, soccer-related questions, and concussion-related questions. Participants: Men's and women's soccer athletes from division II universities in Ohio participating in varsity or junior varsity soccer at their respective universities who were at least 18 years of age. Students from Cedarville University’s School of Pharmacy are launching a new initiative to educate elementary school students and their parents about the dangers of misusing over-the-counter (OTC) medication.

The OTC Medicine Safety Campaign will launch with sessions for fourth and fifth graders at Cedarville Elementary School from April 26-27. The program is part of a larger collaborative effort between the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), McNeil Consumer Healthcare and Scholastic Corporation.
