News To Be Thankful: Cedarville U. Increases Scholarships, Mark D. Weinstein

Cedarville University has announced an increase in scholarships for new freshmen students enrolling for the 2016-17 academic year. This announcement is a result of the administration’s goal of making Christian higher education more affordable for incoming students.

Since 2011, Cedarville University’s financial aid investment has increased more than 50 percent — moving from $18.1 million to $27.3 million. The increased scholarships will add another $3 million for student aid, bringing the total to more than $30 million.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 14.8 percent of people are living in poverty in the United States. In the Dayton region, however, the rate is astronomically higher at 34.7 percent.

But Dayton-based The Gospel Mission, along with the help of several Cedarville University students, is helping to meet the physical and spiritual needs of those in need.

Glen Duerr, Ph.D., assistant professor of international studies at Cedarville University, and his Qualitative Methodology and Reasoning course are getting into the political polling world with recent and upcoming elections that will impact the Miami Valley. The course’s focus has been learning who college students favor among the Republican candidates for president.

Of the students who responded to the poll, 49 percent favored Ben Carson and 12 percent liked Marco Rubio. The other top contenders were Ted Cruz (8 percent) and Donald Trump (2 percent). Ohio Governor John Kasich did not measure in the poll, and 15 percent of those …

Cedar Cliff Partnership Enriches Elementary Students, Mark D. Weinstein

Cedarville University’s School of Education and Cedarville Elementary School are partnering to create enrichment experiences for students in grades K-5.

Pre-service teachers, along with other Cedarville University faculty and staff, are providing hands-on enrichment sessions in the areas of science, math, language arts, theater and fine arts. Pre-service teachers are education majors involved in a school-based field experience under the supervision of a cooperating teacher.

The enrichment sessions began on Saturday, Nov. 7, and will take place once a month through March at Cedar Cliff, which is located directly across the street from Cedarville University.

It was a successful weekend for Cedarville University (Ohio) this past weekend when both the men's and women's cross country teams won the National Christian College Athletic Association's national cross country championships in Houghton, NY.

The women scored 44 points to win the 21-team meet, besting Oklahoma Baptist University by a single point. But, if it hadn't been for a wayward deer on the course, the point differential could have been a little more comfortable for the Yellow Jackets.

High-altitude training is popular among many elite-level athletes as it increases hemoglobin in the blood and helps optimize the use of oxygen, aiding in endurance and overall performance.

A group of students from Cedarville University is conducting a test to see if a high-altitude training mask, meant to simulate training at high elevations, actually gives athletes the benefits of training at high altitudes.

With the goal of reaching out to the community, Cedarville University students will help local residents with various projects on Saturday, Nov. 14. The program, “CU in the Community,” is sponsored by students and held during a weekend each semester.

According to Keith Holcomb, assistant director of global outreach, up to 50 residents or senior citizens are helped with house projects. These projects include raking yards, washing windows and general home and yard maintenance.

Dine Out For Hunger Initiative Helps Local Residents, Mark D. Weinstein

It’s estimated that nearly 50 million people in the United States live in a “food insecure” household. That’s why, for the eighth-straight year, students from Cedarville University’s social work program and the Phi Alpha Honor Society (Epsilon Omega) are partnering with local restaurants to “Dine Out for Hunger.”

The week-long event will raise awareness for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. The initiative will also help the homeless as a portion of all sales from participating restaurants will go to help those in need. The initiative takes place November 16-20 at selected restaurants in the Miami Valley (listed below).

The Cedarville University School of Pharmacy will host its second annual career fair on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Stevens Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Thirteen organizations will attend the fair, including retail pharmacies and hospitals from Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, and West Virginia. These organizations include CVS Health, Discount Drug Mart, Fruth Pharmacy, Grandview Medical Center, Kettering Medical Center, King’s Daughters Medical Center, Kroger Pharmacy Cincinnati/Dayton Division, Mercy Health, Miami Valley Hospital, OhioHealth, Rite Aid Pharmacy, Target Corporation and Walgreens.

It’s nothing out of the ordinary for residents of a local community to come together and support a sports team. But on Monday, Nov. 9, the Cedarville University women’s basketball team will rally to support local newspaper writer Michael Cooper, his wife Carey and their children, Christian, Harper and Benny.

Fans who attend that night’s exhibition game against Earlham, which begins at 7 p.m., are being asked to donate to help Cooper and his family after their Springfield, Ohio, home burned to the ground on October 21. The family was unharmed, but everything they owned was destroyed.
