With the birthplace of aviation serving as the location, the 21st annual World Solar Splash Championships will return to Dayton from June 10-14 at Eastwood Park. Cedarville University will host the event for the second-straight year as teams from universities all over the world compete.

Tim Dewhurst, Ph.D., senior professor of mechanical engineering and faculty adviser for Cedarville’s solar boat team, was instrumental in bringing the competition to Dayton last year and expects this year’s event to be just as successful as it was in 2014.

Lt. Gen. Loren Reno, a 38-year veteran of the United States Air Force and the inaugural dean of Cedarville University’s School of Business Administration, has been appointed interim vice president for academics.

As the dean of the school of business administration since 2012, Reno is credited for increased enrollment, high rates for career placement and the CPA exam. According to 2014 statistics provided by the office of career services, graduates from five business programs had a 100 percent placement within six months of graduation. The medical profession is a desired occupation for many college students. Although many med schools can be highly selective in who they admit, the national average remains around 50 percent.

The percentage, however, is significantly higher for recent Cedarville University premed majors, according to data released by the university's office of career services. In the report, 78 percent of premed majors gained admittance into med school (69 percent on their first attempt), while 100 percent of its allied health graduates over the past five years were admitted into graduate school.

Cedarville University’s board of trustees supported the university’s plan to pursue approval from the Ohio Board of Regents and the Higher Learning Commission on four new academic programs. The programs include a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts in economics, a Master of Divinity degree and a five-year accelerated Bachelor of Arts in biblical studies leading to a Master of Divinity degree.

Rebecca Carpenter,who will graduate from Cedarville University in 2016, was awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study critical needs languages during the summer of 2015. She will study in Lucknow, India. Carpenter is from Blacksburg, Virginia.

Cedarville University will hold its 119th commencement on Saturday, May 2, with 745 students earning undergraduate or graduate degrees. The event will be held in the Doden Field House beginning at 10 a.m. Dr. Thomas White, president, will deliver the commencement address.

Of the graduates, 702 are from the undergraduate program. The 43 graduate students completed degrees in Master of Ministry, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education, and Master of Science in Nursing. Next year Cedarville will award degrees for the first time to its Doctor of Pharmacy students.

Cedarville University accounting graduates continue to perform exceptionally well on the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. According to results from the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), Cedarville University students secured a 77 percent pass rate on their first attempt.

The pass rate is significantly higher than the 50 percent national pass rate. According to NASBA, Cedarville ranks seventh among all small college/universities in the nation and number 25 among 776 universities nationwide putting Cedarville graduates into the top 4% of all accounting programs nationwide.

This research examines the profound Cuban-Venezuelan relationship and the immense influence Cuba has in Venezuelan politics and society. By looking at Cuban involvement in both the Venezuelan government’s social programs and the Venezuelan military, this study explores the degree to which Cuba can be held responsible for the longevity of “Chavismo” in Venezuela. In many ways, the implementation of Hugo Chávez’s “Bolívarian Revolution” and the survival of Nicolás Maduro’s government rest largely in the hands of the Cubans.

This research paper examines how China’s encroachment of the Spratly Islands has forced the Philippines to increase their dependency on bilateral defense agreements with the United States. This paper examines the extent of which START I and New START achieved effective balance of power between the United States and Russia. It addresses the purpose, agreements and the impact of START I and New Start on the effectiveness in accomplishing global balance of power. Mentoring is a practice that is demonstrated by the entire Cedarville University psychology faculty and is considered a longtime hallmark of the department. Michael Firmin, Ph.D, professor of psychology, has taken this trademark to a new level.

For the first time in the history of the National Model United Nations (U.N.) conference, Cedarville University’s model U.N. team captured the highest award. The Cedarville team claimed the “Outstanding Delegation” award at the event held in New York March 29-April 2.

Cedarville has been attending this conference — known to be the highest level of intercollegiate Model United Nations competitions in the country — for five years.
