Though international relations (IR) as a field of study intends to construct knowledge of cooperation and conflicts between states, it is undeniable that, in current world politics, there are non-state actors that comprise world citizens who have gathered to voice and protect public interests, as well as to make changes in public policies, in the name of "social movements." That is because state and foreign policies are explicit decisions and commitments portrayed by authorized representatives of the states. Apart from domestic social movements, there are also transnational social movements, such as Amnesty International and Human Right Watch, along with terrorism …

This research studies international governance design of the 1995 Mekong Agreement. It aims to explain why the lower Mekong basin states could reach an agreement despite their divergent interests and preferences. The upstream state like Thailand preferred water allocation rules that allow it to use tributary water in its state boundary autonomously and to use mainstream water with least limitations. Meanwhile, the downstream states preferred some rules for controlling Thailand's water use and coping with externalities and uncertainties resulting from the upstream countries' water utilization. But such a strong governance implies a reduction in riparian states' sovereignty and policy autonomy …

ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสังคมเมือง สังคมเสี่ยงภัย กับสังคมผู้สูงวัย The Relationship Among Urban, Risk, And Ageing Society, สิริพงศ์ ปาลกะวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา

Journal of Social Sciences

This article aims to describe the relationship between urban society, risk society, and ageing society. As the result of modernity, 'urban society' has shared the characteristics of 'risk society' including environmental pollutions, crimes, ghettos, and traffic congestions, etc. Those problems are results of human activities which reflect the degrading urban society. With the effects of demographic transition, the population age structure of many countries has changed and become the so-called 'ageing society.' Since the urban society has become more and more risky for functions and individuals, it is expected that its effects on economy and lifestyle would get worsened directly …

This paper delineates debates on concepts of multiculturalism and gender between a proponent of multiculturalism and liberal feminists in Western society. It also elaborates our understandings on multiculturalism in relation to gender, sexualities and sexual diversities in Thai society. Findings show that there appears little attention to apply the concept of multiculturalism for studies on gender and sexual diversities in Thai society. Concepts such as subculture, lifestyle, rights on sexual diversities, and social movement have rather been utilized. This paper proposes that studies on multiculturalism in Thai society should not limit an interest merely on an acceptance on cultural differences …

Resolving The Conflict Between Mining And Sustainability, David A.C. Manning Jan 2014

Resolving The Conflict Between Mining And Sustainability, David A.C. Manning

Applied Environmental Research

Mining is essential for human health and prosperity, and is increasing as the global populationgrows. The need for minerals appears to conflict with what is commonly understood as 'sustainability',as geological resources are non-renewable on a human timescale. However, the Brundtland definition of sustainability includes the concept of 'needs', implying that there has to be a balanced approach thatconsiders poverty alleviation. It identifies the three pillars of sustainability: economic, social and environmental. In the UK, mining has a legacy extending back over 6000 years. The approach taken to sustainability will be illustrated by 3 examples from northern England. In the 18thand 19thcenturies, …

Environmental And Economic Of Flooring Building Materials, Nachawit Tikul Jan 2014

Environmental And Economic Of Flooring Building Materials, Nachawit Tikul

Applied Environmental Research

Green building design requires use of building materials that minimize environmental impact, necessitating selection of building materials by their environmental profile as well as economic cost-benefit considerations. The objective of this research is to determine the environmental impacts per square meter of three flooring materials; ceramic tiles, marble tiles, andparquet produced in Thailand. Life cycle cost (LCC) of the three materials are determined and compared. The study finds that ceramic tiles cause the greatest environmental impact, especially during the material extraction phase. When calculating all costsincurred throughout the life-cycle, the cost of untreated solid wood parquet is highest.

Asean's Weak Role In Bilateral Dispute Settlement: The Case Of Preah Vihear (Phra Wihan), Gabriela Steinemann

Asian Review

This paper examines the role of ASEAN in the resolution of territorial conflicts between its member states. It studies the border dispute cases of Vietnam-Cambodia and Indonesia-Malaysia, before turning its focus to the Thai-Cambodian conflict over Preah Vihear (Phra Wihan). The domestic political contexts in both countries provided important reasons for the weak role ASEAN has been able to play. But the association's struggle to find a meaningful place in dispute settlement is not limited to Preah Vihear, and it will likely continue as long as member states are unwilling to make use of the mechanisms they once created. At …
