Online And Hybrid Instructional Design For Liaison Librarians: A New Certification Program, Kimberly A. Kenward, Mary O'Kelly Jan 2017

Online And Hybrid Instructional Design For Liaison Librarians: A New Certification Program, Kimberly A. Kenward, Mary O'Kelly

Books and Contributions to Books

This chapter focuses on the development of a faculty development program for online and hybrid instruction, which was used to prepare and assist instruction librarians to teach online. This chapter was written to address a challenge many higher institutions face: how to provide quality training for instruction librarians wishing to support their faculty who are transitioning to hybrid or online teaching. We offer a brief overview of our four-week hybrid program, providing practical examples and outcomes of a productive collaboration between instructional designers and instruction librarians.

Library integration into course management systems is not new. In 2004, Kearley and Phillips …

The Front Face Of Library Services: How Student Employees Lead The Library At Grand Valley State University, Kristin Meyer, Jennifer Torreano

Books and Contributions to Books

Academic libraries have always been involved in student learning, but our profession has perhaps failed to recognize that the students who work for us every day are likely the ones we can impact the most. Librarians and library staff have a tremendous opportunity to contribute to the professional growth of the students they employ. Historically, academic libraries have defined student learning in terms of librarian instruction, collections, and providing study space. While these remain important aspects of what libraries do, student employees benefit from intentional, empowered roles and, in turn, libraries are enriched when student employees take on leadership roles. …

Designed To Meet Our Institutional Mission: A Case Study From Grand Valley State University Libraries, Kristin Meyer, Erin Silva Fisher

Books and Contributions to Books

Academic libraries exist to fulfill the missions of the institutions they serve. Historically, this included maintaining collections in support of courses and curriculum, providing instructional and reference services, and offering space for student study. Decisions about library space design were based on these priorities. However, technological advancements have changed how libraries store and provide access to collections and, as Anne M. Houston (2015) notes, “…the balance of space is moving away from collection storage and toward space enabled to meet other user needs” (84). Library spaces can now meet institutional missions in ways that go beyond traditional expectations, especially in …

Suicide Risk Assessment In A Psychiatric Medical Unit, Olga D'Argenio

Master's Projects

Suicide is a major health concern in the United States. In a scholarly article, Hutton (2015) found that annually, 2.2 million adults plan suicide, 8.3 million have thoughts of suicide, and 1 million adults attempt suicide. A 2013 Center for Disease Control (CDC) analysis found that suicide rates among persons age 35 to 64 years have increased during the years of 1999-2010 by 28.4%. Bolton, Gunnell, and Turecki (2015) found that suicide is a major international public health problem claiming one life every 40 seconds. The study also states suicide is a second leading cause of death in people age …

Designing Technical-Assistance Programs: Considerations For Funders And Lessons Learned, Jennifer Lyons, Sheila Dunleavy Hoag, Cara Orfield, Sonya Streeter Dec 2016

Designing Technical-Assistance Programs: Considerations For Funders And Lessons Learned, Jennifer Lyons, Sheila Dunleavy Hoag, Cara Orfield, Sonya Streeter

The Foundation Review

As foundations continue to provide grantees with technical assistance in addition to financial support, it is important to understand what works well, for whom, and in what circumstances. This reflective practice article aims to help funders who have identified a problem amenable to technical assistance to develop a strong program by providing support to a group of organizations addressing similar problems or by providing customized individual support.

Drawing on insights from evaluations of two technical-assistance programs, this article recommends five key issues for funders to consider when offering such a program: whose priorities will shape the agenda, how group composition …

Through The Looking Glass: Foundation Evaluation And Learning And The Quest For Strategic Learning, Suzanne Kennedy Leahy, Sandra Wegmann, Lexi Nolen Dec 2016

Through The Looking Glass: Foundation Evaluation And Learning And The Quest For Strategic Learning, Suzanne Kennedy Leahy, Sandra Wegmann, Lexi Nolen

The Foundation Review

Strategic learning, a critical if relatively new lens for philanthropy, is neither simple nor efficient to institutionalize or practice yet — foundations are still figuring out how to do it well. In 2015, the Episcopal Health Foundation launched a project to distill lessons about how leading foundations configure evaluation and learning, and how they allocate related responsibilities in support of strategic learning.

This article addresses different models that foundations use to establish and staff evaluation and learning functions, what other organizational considerations they should take into account in order to prioritize strategic-learning work, and what tools and approaches can be …

Lessons About Evaluating Health-Coverage Advocacy Across Multiple Campaigns And Foundations, Leslie Foster, Mary Harrington, Sheila Hoag, Debra Lipson Dec 2016

Lessons About Evaluating Health-Coverage Advocacy Across Multiple Campaigns And Foundations, Leslie Foster, Mary Harrington, Sheila Hoag, Debra Lipson

The Foundation Review

This article draws on a dozen years’ experience in evaluating major consumerhealth advocacy initiatives to build the knowledge base about advocacy evaluation. The authors explain how their evaluations were strengthened by articulating a detailed theory of change and emphasizing assessment of interim outcomes from many perspectives and methods.

Even with comprehensive data and integrated analysis, however, some ambiguity in the results is inevitable; there is no completely objective way to determine the effectiveness of an advocacy initiative. Moreover, sometimes solid or even exceptional advocacy efforts do not lead to desired policy outcomes. Advocacy initiatives that fail initially may be groundwork …

Aiming High: Foundation Support For State Advocates Brings Universal Children’S Health Coverage Within Reach, Sheila Dunleavy Hoag, Debra J. Lipson, Victoria Peebles Dec 2016

Aiming High: Foundation Support For State Advocates Brings Universal Children’S Health Coverage Within Reach, Sheila Dunleavy Hoag, Debra J. Lipson, Victoria Peebles

The Foundation Review

To help close the children’s health insurance coverage gap in the United States, in 2011 the Atlantic Philanthropies created the Kids- Well Campaign. KidsWell’s theory of change posits that if advocates could leverage new funding and coverage opportunities created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, they could expand the number of children with health insurance coverage.

This article presents the major results of the KidsWell evaluation, which found substantial progress in achieving KidsWell interim policy changes and coverage outcomes. But advocates still have a full agenda, which means grantees and funders need to redouble efforts to educate the …

Laying The Groundwork For A National Impact Investing Marketplace, Stephanie L. Gripne, Joanne Kelley, Kathy Merchant Dec 2016

Laying The Groundwork For A National Impact Investing Marketplace, Stephanie L. Gripne, Joanne Kelley, Kathy Merchant

The Foundation Review

The practice of impact investing is rapidly gaining momentum, but the level of activity among individual and institutional investors, including philanthropists and foundations, has barely penetrated projections of market potential.

The marketplace that should connect impact investors with investees or social ventures does not function effectively.

Developing cost-effective ways to engage new investors and break down barriers to investment is an essential part of growing the industry.

Developing cost-effective ways to “prime the pump” for social ventures to become investor-ready — through a capacity-building process that includes outreach, education, and technical assistance — is an essential part of growing the …

Back To The Future: Prospects For Education Faculty And Librarian Collaboration Thirty Years Later, Lindy Scripps-Hoekstra, Erica R. Hamilton Nov 2016

Back To The Future: Prospects For Education Faculty And Librarian Collaboration Thirty Years Later, Lindy Scripps-Hoekstra, Erica R. Hamilton

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Thirty years ago, education conference panelists shared concerns regarding collaboration between education faculty and librarians and they presented ideas for expanding these partnerships. A review of their ideas raises an important question: In what ways have their ideas for collaboration and partnership been realized? To answer this question, the authors conducted a review of the literature regarding education faculty-librarian collaboration. Findings indicate that when collaborating with education faculty, there are three roles librarians have embodied: librarian-as-reference, librarian-as-consultant, and librarian-as-instructor. These roles contribute to the realization of the panelists’ proposed ideas and offer suggestions for future collaboration and research possibilities.
