Transforming Acquisitions And Collection Services: Perspectives On Collaboration Within And Across Libraries, Michelle Flinchbaugh, Chuck Thomas, Rob Tench, Vicki Sipe, Robin Barnard Moskal, Lynda A. Aldana, Erica A. Owusu

Purdue University Press Book Previews

This book explores ways in which libraries can reach new levels of service, quality, and efficiency while minimizing cost by collaborating in acquisitions. In consortial acquisitions, a number of libraries work together, usually in an existing library consortia, to leverage size to support acquisitions in each individual library. In cross-functional acquisitions, acquisitions collaborates to support other library functions. For the library acquisitions manager, technical services manager, or the library director, awareness of different options for effective consortial and cross-functional acquisitions allows for the optimization of staff and resources to reach goals. This work presents those options in the form of …

The Dehumanization Of Immigrants And Refugees: A Comparison Of Dehumanizing Rhetoric By All Candidates In Three U.S. Presidential Elections, Amanda Warnock Aug 2019

The Dehumanization Of Immigrants And Refugees: A Comparison Of Dehumanizing Rhetoric By All Candidates In Three U.S. Presidential Elections, Amanda Warnock

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

dehumanization theory by tracking and comparing dehumanizing rhetoric used by all presidential candidates during the 2008, 2012, and 2016 campaigns. Using data hand-collected from all presidential speeches conducted during these periods, including accounting for ad-libbing by Donald Trump, I find that Trump was distinctive in his dehumanization of immigrants and refugees, far surpassing all other candidates. His language surrounding these groups focused heavily on (1) using nonhuman language to describe their actions and migrations, (2) assigning criminality and viciousness to immigrants, (3) repeating stories of the deaths of American citizens by immigrants, (4) saying that immigrants and refugees have values …

A Success Story? Delivering The Vision For Catalyst, Alison Mackenzie Aug 2019

A Success Story? Delivering The Vision For Catalyst, Alison Mackenzie

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In a bold and unprecedented move by the University, a new building, housing Library and Learning Services, Student Services and Careers was agreed by the University’s Board of Governors at their November 2016 meeting. At an initial cost of £26m it represents the largest single investment in a new building project by the University. This was a project to create an inspiring building and ‘provide an intellectually stimulating, creative and inclusive environment for [the university’s] community’. Whilst being highly student-focused, it was designed as a facility for the entire Edge Hill community including researchers, staff, alumni, and external …

Adding Up The Flipped Subscription Model, Scott Nicholls, Simon Hart, Howard Amos, Jill Benn Aug 2019

Adding Up The Flipped Subscription Model, Scott Nicholls, Simon Hart, Howard Amos, Jill Benn

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

One of the common pathways proposed to achieving a global open access scholarly publishing model is the “flipped” approach. In this scenario, journal publishers “flip” their pricing model from subscription to gold open access (gold OA) and library budgets are redirected from supporting subscriptions to Article Publishing Costs (APCs) associated with gold OA. Initiatives such as OA2020, and more recently Plan S, have to varying degrees advocated for this approach.

Underlying the flipped model is the assumption there is enough money in the global academic library subscription system to cover the costs of a scholarly publishing model based on APCs. …

Determining Correlations Between Library Usage And Student Success At The Durban University Of Technology: A Pilot Study, Sagren R. Moodley, Sean R. Carte Aug 2019

Determining Correlations Between Library Usage And Student Success At The Durban University Of Technology: A Pilot Study, Sagren R. Moodley, Sean R. Carte

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Thorpe et al. (2016: 373) note that there is a growing trend for academic libraries to adopt measures that demonstrate the value of the library in the context of student success. While it may seem intuitive to librarians that students who engage more with library services and resources learn more, Oakleaf (2017) cautions that providing reliable evidence to support this is not straightforward. Librarians are aware of the numerous activities students engage with in the library, and, according to Soria, Fransen and Nackerud (2013), it is important to examine the differences of each of those interactions in relation to student …

Every Step Counts: Adapting Qualtrics To Encourage Student Engagement In Library Orientations, Jennifer Gu, Christopher Chan Aug 2019

Every Step Counts: Adapting Qualtrics To Encourage Student Engagement In Library Orientations, Jennifer Gu, Christopher Chan

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Many libraries have adopted gamification strategies to enhance their orientation programmes, in the hope of encouraging better student engagement via goal-based design. A literature review reveals a lack of in-depth, granular data on participant behavior in these gamified activities, with evidence generally limited to post-event feedback and comments. Such data could potentially provide insights to help assess the extent to which orientation programme outcomes have been achieved.

An example of an orientation activity with in-depth usage data is provided by Hong Kong Baptist University Library’s paperless, mobile-assisted Library Mystery Challenge (the Challenge). Designed using the popular data collection and analysis …

Both Sides Of The Coin: Supporting Postgraduates And Researchers In Dedicated Spaces At Cput And Stellenbosch University, Dr Michiel Moll, Elizabeth Moll-Willard

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The idea of a space dedicated to supporting research at the university housed within the library is not a new concept. These spaces, often called Research Commons, have been written about widely in literature since 2008. However the impact of these spaces is something that, a decade later, warrants investigation as these spaces have also had to evolve to both meet clients changing needs and to reflect the new trends within libraries.

In South Africa, the Research Commons is a well-known concept within university libraries. Both the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and the Stellenbosch University Libraries offer such …
