Flight Energy Management Training: Promoting Safety And Efficiency, Juan R. Merkt Oct 2013

Flight Energy Management Training: Promoting Safety And Efficiency, Juan R. Merkt

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Poor aircraft energy management can lead to unsafe and inefficient operations. Despite their impact on safety and economy, energy management skills are not adequately taught or evaluated in civilian pilot training. This paper 1) addresses the need for better energy management training, 2) provides a conceptual and pedagogical framework for later curriculum development, and 3) suggests key attributes of an effective training program. To make the case, the study uses energy management to link safety and efficiency. It then synthesizes energy principles across disciplines and illustrates how such principles, once simplified, become powerful instructional tools. Finally, it suggests that an …

Flight Skill Proficiency Issues In Instrument Approach Accidents, Richard O. Fanjoy, Julius C. Keller Oct 2013

Flight Skill Proficiency Issues In Instrument Approach Accidents, Richard O. Fanjoy, Julius C. Keller

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Despite procedural modifications and advanced technology instrumentation, instrument approach phase accidents continue to be an issue in general aviation. This exploratory study details an analysis of instrument approach phase accidents that occurred between 2002 and 2012. Particular attention was focused on instrument proficiency check (IPC) currency for pilots involved in accidents during the approach phase of flight. An analysis suggests that more than half of instrument approach accidents evaluated during this study happened within three and half months of the last IPC. A leading cause of these accidents was failure to control the aircraft. Instrument training issues and potential follow-on …

Thinking Outside The Box Turtle: Public Perceptions Of An Imperiled Species, Colleen M. Hartel, Stuart Carlton, Linda S. Prokopy Oct 2013

Thinking Outside The Box Turtle: Public Perceptions Of An Imperiled Species, Colleen M. Hartel, Stuart Carlton, Linda S. Prokopy

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) experience negative impacts from human activities. Collection for the pet trade or mortalities caused by lawn mowers and vehicles are detrimental to populations, which have experienced rapid decline in Indiana. Understanding perceptions and attitudes held about species can help outreach. This study aims to observe how perceptions and fear response differ between a) genders, b) contact with box turtles, and c) conservation group membership. Mail surveys were administered to 1,378 residents of the Blue River Watershed in Southern Indiana. Respondents rated box turtles on 11 semantic differential pairs and reported their agreement …

Scaling Up: Hybrid Instruction, Ilana R. Barnes, Mary Dugan Oct 2013

Scaling Up: Hybrid Instruction, Ilana R. Barnes, Mary Dugan

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

A major strategic initiative of Purdue University is to meet head-on the critical issues facing students on today's campus. Student learning, and retention and completion rates are among the top concerns. To meet these challenges, Purdue is adopting a university-wide core curriculum including an information literacy requirement, which is a mainstay to lifelong learning. Additionally, to address student success issues Purdue has created "Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation" (IMPACT). IMPACT has been a successful collaborative effort of several Purdue departments to engage students more fully in their own learning. Since its inception, library faculty have taken a leadership role …

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Since 2005, reported laser attacks from people on the ground directed towards arriving and departing aircraft have increased over 300%. A laser aimed at the windshield of an aircraft startles a pilot and may cause injury. This study determined empirical evidence of laser intensity in the flight deck and the potential for harm to the human eye at various distances. Results of this study revealed that relatively low-powered lasers had measured intensity levels through cockpit windshields at the 200 and 500 feet distances that may cause damage to crewmembers’ eyes according to standards established by the federal government. At longer …

Assessing The Preparedness Of The Veterinary Profession To Communicate With Limited English Proficient Spanish-Speaking Pet Owners, Ruth Ellen Landau Oct 2013

Assessing The Preparedness Of The Veterinary Profession To Communicate With Limited English Proficient Spanish-Speaking Pet Owners, Ruth Ellen Landau

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to assess the preparedness of the veterinary profession to communicate with limited English proficient Spanish-speaking pet owners (LEP SSPOs). Results of surveys with 393 Latino pet owners, 383 small animal veterinarians and staff, and over 2000 veterinary students indicate that interaction between veterinary professionals and LEP SSPOs is not a rare occurrence: Veterinarians in states with large established or fast-growing Latino communities are seeing LEP SSPOs and their pets on a regular basis: 89% of veterinarians have LEP Spanish-speaking clients, over half of these practitioners are seeing LEP SSPOs weekly, and over half …

Manifold Learning Based Spectral Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jun-Hwa Chi Oct 2013

Manifold Learning Based Spectral Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jun-Hwa Chi

Open Access Dissertations

Nonlinear mixing effects inherent in hyperspectral data are not properly represented in linear spectral unmixing models. Although direct nonlinear unmixing models provide capability to capture nonlinear phenomena, they are difficult to formulate and the results are not always generalizable. Manifold learning based spectral unmixing accommodates nonlinearity in the data in the feature extraction stage followed by linear mixing, thereby incorporating some characteristics of nonlinearity while retaining advantages of linear unmixing approaches. Since endmember selection is critical to successful spectral unmixing, it is important to select proper endmembers from the manifold space. However, excessive computational burden hinders development of manifolds for …
