Leading From The Center Out: The Joint Library Services Leadership Team At James Madison University, K.T. L. Vaughan, Kristen S. Shuyler, Kelly N. Miller-Martin, Erika Peterson

Kristen S. Shuyler

In a system with multiple service points, how can leadership work together to keep the library as a whole relevant and central to students? James Madison University Libraries created the Joint Library Services Leadership Team, which works outside traditional departmental silos to provide coherent, consistent, and collaborative services regardless of location.

Three major service points of James Madison University Libraries, the two main library circulation/reference departments and the media resources center, have historically been both physically and philosophically separate from each other. Although the departments shared common goals of providing excellent student learning-focused services, they did not systematically work together …

Improving Information Literacy Through Wikipedia Editing In The Chemistry Classroom: Lessons Learned, Ye Li, Charity Flener Lovitt, Anne J. Mcneil, Kristen S. Shuyler Apr 2019

Improving Information Literacy Through Wikipedia Editing In The Chemistry Classroom: Lessons Learned, Ye Li, Charity Flener Lovitt, Anne J. Mcneil, Kristen S. Shuyler

Kristen S. Shuyler

Assignments in which students edit Wikipedia may help students learn about the complexities of information creation and production, while engaging them in researching and writing about topics related to class content. This chapter presents two case studies that illustrate how Wikipedia-based activities can be designed to achieve both chemistry and information literacy learning outcomes. In both examples, faculty partnered with a librarian to implement the Wikipedia editing assignments. Through these experiences, those involved learned about Wikipedia and its community, and identified promising practices for project requirements based on formal and informal assessment and observations. Reflections are offered on the value …

Kristen S. Shuyler

When library staff create collaborative projects on their own, are these efforts discordant or harmonious? How does library leadership conduct different groups for cacophony or symphony? What management models empower library staff to continue exciting collaborative projects while learning to play together in tune?

Teaching Climate Change Concepts And The Nature Of Science: A Library Activity To Identify Sources Of Climate Change Misconceptions, Charity Flener Lovitt, Kristen S. Shuyler Apr 2019

Teaching Climate Change Concepts And The Nature Of Science: A Library Activity To Identify Sources Of Climate Change Misconceptions, Charity Flener Lovitt, Kristen S. Shuyler

Kristen S. Shuyler

A library activity was developed in which students found information about climate science misconceptions from popular and scientific literatures. As part of the activity, students developed a rubric to evaluate the credibility and type of literature sources they found. The activity prepared students to produce an annotated bibliography of articles, which they then used to create a training document about a climate science misconception for staff at a local science center. Evaluation of annotated bibliographies showed that students were able to distinguish between popular and scholarly literature but struggled to identify primary and secondary sources within the scholarly literature. In …

Re-Thinking Survey Promotion: It's Not Just About The Numbers, Kristen S. Shuyler, Jonathan Reed, David Vess Apr 2019

Re-Thinking Survey Promotion: It's Not Just About The Numbers, Kristen S. Shuyler, Jonathan Reed, David Vess

Kristen S. Shuyler

Promoting a survey - it's all about getting people to click on it, right? Not always. This session will describe the promotion campaign we designed for the James Madison University Libraries' 2015 LibQUAL+ survey. Ultimately, this campaign was not just about the survey - it was about how we want our campus to feel about the Libraries.

Libraries commonly engage their user communities by gathering users' feedback. Analyzing and acting on user feedback can lead to the responsive design and (re)development of library services, spaces, and programs. Our campaign placed that value of "responsiveness" front and center, with two taglines: …

Engaging With Black Lives Matter And Supporting Our Communities, Yasmeen Shorish, Michael Mungin, Kristen S. Shuyler Apr 2019

Engaging With Black Lives Matter And Supporting Our Communities, Yasmeen Shorish, Michael Mungin, Kristen S. Shuyler

Kristen S. Shuyler

In October 2016, the Diversity Council of Libraries and Educational Technologies produced book displays in Carrier and Rose Libraries that focused on "Understanding Black Lives Matter." The council wanted to provide information on this social movement within the context of national history and racial identity. A list of books that covered topic areas of criminal justice, Jim Crow, racism, and the Black experience - among others - was generated, along with two informational placards. One placard placed the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement within historical and social context, while the other placard offered a preemptive response to the question "Why …

Promoting Civic Engagement Through Academic Library Outreach Programs, Kristen S. Shuyler, Liz Chenevey, Ryan Winfree

Kristen S. Shuyler

How are Virginia's academic libraries promoting civic engagement? This poster presents results of a statewide civic engagement survey and shares one academic library's civic engagement outreach activities. Civic literacy competencies, such as the ability to contact representatives, are related to information literacy skills, and libraries should continue to promote them.

Play Your Cards Right: Creating A Library Orientation Game (Poster), Kelly Giles, Kristen S. Shuyler, Andrew Evans, Jonathan Reed

Kristen S. Shuyler

A team of four librarians and staff drew upon previous experience with game-based learning to develop an orientation activity for transfer students. "Apples to Apples"-style cards were created using a free online card generator. The game exposed transfer students to information about the campus library system in a low-key way that allowed players with different knowledge levels to socialize and compete against one another on an equal basis.

Organic Outreach For Academic Libraries: Collaborating With Student Affairs Units To Reach College Students, Kristen S. Shuyler Apr 2019

Organic Outreach For Academic Libraries: Collaborating With Student Affairs Units To Reach College Students, Kristen S. Shuyler

Kristen S. Shuyler

The college campus is a complex ecosystem of services and resources. Academic library outreach efforts offered in partnership with Student Affairs units can support the whole student as they navigate this ecosystem. This presentation offers one librarian's experience collaborating with Student Affairs units such as health, counseling, and recreation centers. A mental model for this work that draws on the metaphor of organic gardening helps frame the remarks and reflections.

Building The Deck: Creating A Library Card Game For Outreach To Transfer Students (Poster), Kelly Giles, Kristen S. Shuyler, Andrew Evans, Jonathan Reed

Kristen S. Shuyler

University librarians and staff drew upon previous experience with game-based learning to develop an orientation activity for transfer students. A card game was selected due to the large number of students expected and lack of computers in the available space. Apples to Apples-style cards were created using a free online card generator. Multiple decks were printed to accommodate up to 150 players. The game exposed transfer students to information about the campus library system in a low-key way that allowed players with different knowledge levels to socialize and compete against one another on an equal basis.

Religiosity, Parental Support, And Formal Volunteering Among Teenagers, Isaac Paintsil Apr 2019

Religiosity, Parental Support, And Formal Volunteering Among Teenagers, Isaac Paintsil

Isaac Paintsil

Few countries can boast of having the culture of formal volunteering seen in the United States. In explaining this phenomenon, many empirical studies have found religiosity significant in predicting behaviors among young adults, adults, and the elderly. However, teens (13 – 17 years) have not attracted much attention from researchers, though they possess the time and resources most needed to volunteer. Using data from the National Study on Youth and Religion (NSYR) Wave 1, this study examines the relationship between formal volunteering and teens’ individual (religious salience and religious experience) and collective religiosity (religious tradition, church attendance, and religious youth …

A Content Analysis On The Phases Of Emergency Management For Hurricane Maria In Puerto Rico, Jose Rivera, Fernando I. Rivera Apr 2019

A Content Analysis On The Phases Of Emergency Management For Hurricane Maria In Puerto Rico, Jose Rivera, Fernando I. Rivera

Jose Luis Rivera

The destruction caused by Hurricane Maria challenged the emergency management agencies in Puerto Rico. More than a month after the storm, most of the island remained without electricity, and full recovery has taken several months, if not years. This study explores the four phases of emergency management (mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery) for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico from the perspective of FEMA and AEMEAD. Data comes from a content analysis of official communications, news reports, and social media postings from FEMA, AEMEAD, and other agencies responsible for emergency management in Puerto Rico. Results suggest that the magnitude of the …

In Search Of A New Indigeneity: Archaeological And Spiritual Heritage In Highland Bolivia, Isabel Scarborough Apr 2019

In Search Of A New Indigeneity: Archaeological And Spiritual Heritage In Highland Bolivia, Isabel Scarborough

Isabel Scarborough

This article appears as part of the special issue on "Archaeology and New Religious Movements". Bolivians are inventing spiritual practices that fit into the current dominant political discourse of decolonization and revalorization of native beliefs by associating these new traditions with archaeological spaces and objects. This new Bolivia is believed to emerge from the ashes of the old economic and social order, which for centuries oppressed and elided native religious practices, and harkens back to precolonial values. Drawing from long-term ethnographic research, media reports, and scholarly works, I aim to examine these new practices to improve our understanding of emerging …

Gradually Transitioning To A New Taxonomy: Thinning, Shaping, And Fading, Melanie Agrachov Apr 2019

Gradually Transitioning To A New Taxonomy: Thinning, Shaping, And Fading, Melanie Agrachov

Melanie Agrachov

Currently, there is a large body of work in the basic and applied literature about schedule thinning and the underlying concepts associated with these procedures. However, some of the terminology used in this research area (e.g., shaping, fading, and thinning) has been applied inconsistently, suggesting that researchers and practitioners might misunderstand these terms. In this paper, I will discuss the unsystematic use of terminology found in the literature describing schedule thinning procedures, as well as other gradual change procedures, more generally. Additionally, I will propose a new taxonomy of gradual behavior change procedures in the hope of creating a more …

Digitizing Modern Archival Collections, Or How We Addressed Copyright In The Murky Waters Of Clippings, Student Strike Papers And More, Virginia A. Dressler, Cindy Kristof Apr 2019

Digitizing Modern Archival Collections, Or How We Addressed Copyright In The Murky Waters Of Clippings, Student Strike Papers And More, Virginia A. Dressler, Cindy Kristof

Virginia A Dressler

In order to aid digitization of the Kent State University May 4th Collection in preparation for the 50th anniversary, University Libraries received a National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) grant which funded digitization of a selection of the large archival collection. Librarians developed new workflows to address copyright and privacy issues in assorted archival materials to be digitized. The session will highlight this work, and also provide information on the approach to complex copyright issues present in many archival collections, including fair use analysis and permission-seeking. Lastly, effective cross-training of staff and student assistants will be reviewed.

“I Don’T Know If I Have The Courage”: Reproductive Choices In Times Of Zika, Ana Rosa Linde Arias Apr 2019

“I Don’T Know If I Have The Courage”: Reproductive Choices In Times Of Zika, Ana Rosa Linde Arias

Ana Rosa Linde Arias

In this transnational study, we aimed at providing insights into women’s views and attitudes towards their reproductive rights during the Zika epidemic.  Women of distinct nationalities and ethnicities were recruited from various locations in Brazil, Puerto Rico, and the United States. We conducted semistructured interviews that suggest that participants reproductive decisions were intimately related to personal convictions and cultural beliefs, and their actions and thoughts were embedded in their sociocultural norms. The majority of women interviewed communicated that it takes courage to make the extreme, emotional, and overwhelming decision to have an abortion. The findings of this study suggest that …

Strategic Ignorance In Sequential Procurement, Silvana Krasteva, Huseyin Yildirim Apr 2019

Strategic Ignorance In Sequential Procurement, Silvana Krasteva, Huseyin Yildirim

Huseyin Yildirim

Should a buyer approach sellers of complementary goods informed or uninformed of her private valuations, and if informed, in which sequence? In this paper, we show that an informed buyer would start with the high-value seller to minimize future holdup. Informed (or careful) sequencing may, however, hurt the buyer as sellers "read" into it. The buyer may, therefore, commit to ignorance, perhaps, by: overloading herself with unrelated tasks; delegating the sequencing decision; or letting sellers self-schedule. Absent such commitment, we show that ignorance is not time-consistent for the buyer but it increases trade. Evidence on land assembly supports our findings.

"I'M A Srong Independent Black Woman": The Cost Of Strong Black Woman Schema Endorsement, Stephanie Castelin, Grace White Apr 2019

"I'M A Srong Independent Black Woman": The Cost Of Strong Black Woman Schema Endorsement, Stephanie Castelin, Grace White

Stephanie Castelin

The Strong Black Woman Schema (SBWS) is a cultural expectation placed on black women to
unfailingly display signs of strength and caretaker qualities, while suppressing their emotions.
The present study aimed to examine the relationship between the SBWS and psychological
distress, suicidal behaviors, and resilience. Researchers expected to find a positive relationship
between the SBWS and psychological distress, a positive relationship between the SBWS and
resilience, and an undefined relationship between the SBWS and suicidal behaviors. The study
also examined the potential moderating effects of the SBWS and resilience on the existing
psychological distress-suicidal behaviors relationship. Lastly, the study examined …

Disruptive But Not Disreputable: Discussing Open Access, Michele Gibney Apr 2019

Disruptive But Not Disreputable: Discussing Open Access, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

The open access landscape is highly disruptive to established publishing practices and large changes are taking place globally in this arena. Some dismiss and resist the evolution of open access publishing practices as disreputable progress and wish to turn back the clock while others laud it as the future rise of scholarship.

This presentation will provide a broad overview of the open access discussion and focus on several research projects currently underway to ascertain faculty, student, and alumni reactions to their own open access author- and reader-ship from both developed and transition countries.
