Health Beliefs, Personality, And Adherence In Hemodialysis Patients: An Interactional Perspective, John Wiebe, Alan Christensen Feb 1997

Health Beliefs, Personality, And Adherence In Hemodialysis Patients: An Interactional Perspective, John Wiebe, Alan Christensen

Alan J. Christensen

Research examining the main effects of health beliefs and personality on medical regimen adherence has yielded inconsistent results. This study tested the hypothesis that health beliefs and personality predict adherence in an interactive manner. Components of the Health Beliefs Model, Conscientiousness (C) from the NEO-Five Factor Inventory, and regimen adherence were assessed in a sample of 70 in-center hemodialysis patients. In a hierarchical regression analysis, the interaction of health beliefs and C failed to explain a significant portion of the variance in interdialysis weight gain, a measure of adherence to fluid restrictions, after controlling for demographic characteristics. The interaction did …

Women's Perceptions Of A "Chilly Climate" And Their Cognitive Outcomes During The First Year Of College, Ernest T. Pascarella, Elizabeth J. Whitt, Marcia I. Edison, Amaury Nora, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Patricia M. Yeager, Patrick T. Terenzini

Linda Serra Hagedorn

In this study of 2- and 4-year colleges, the extent to which women students' perceptions of a "chilly campus climate" were related to first year cognitive outcomes was investigated at 23 institutions. After a variety of potentially confounding influences were controlled for, several negative relationships were found between perceived chilly climates and women's cognitive growth. The negative relationships were more pronounced for women attending 2-year colleges than for their counterparts at 4-year institutions .

Authorship Patterns In Marine Mammal Science, 1985-1993, James Bird

James E Bird

Authorship studies in such disciplines as physics and economics show that with the passage of time there has been an increase in the number of authors per paper, indicating a trend toward more collaboration. In this study, a search was run on the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts database to identify marine mammal science papers published from 1985 to 1993. A total of 1308 papers published in scientific journals was examined. There were weak but statistically significant trends in the increase in the number of authors per paper as well as in the number of multi-authored papers written by authors …

End Of An Era? Affirmative Action And Reaction In The 1990s, Andrew Ewoh, Euel Elliott Dec 1996

End Of An Era? Affirmative Action And Reaction In The 1990s, Andrew Ewoh, Euel Elliott

Andrew I.E. Ewoh

This article looks at the political dynamics of affirmative action policy since its inception m the 1960s We suggest that while key variables created a relatively favorable climate for affirmative action m the first two decades or so of its existence, recent developments suggest that race-conscious programs will be substantially limited in the future, although not eliminated m their entirety. We contend that a changing judiciary, Republican control of Congress, and shifts m public opinion, as manifested in Proposition 209 m California, interact in ways that will make many compensatory programs difficult to maintain.

Measuring Market Power And Cost-Efficiency Effects Of Industrial Concentration, Azzeddine Azzam Dec 1996

Measuring Market Power And Cost-Efficiency Effects Of Industrial Concentration, Azzeddine Azzam

Azzeddine Azzam

In this paper, the author shows how E. Appelbaum's framework for testing price-taking behavior in a single industry can be formally extended to consider concentration explicitly. In so doing, he separates the market power effect of concentration from its cost-efficiency effect. Data from the U.S. beef-packing industry are used to illustrate an empirical application of the model. The findings support oligopsonistic market power and slaughter-cost efficiency in the industry. However, the cost-efficiency effect outweighs the market-power effect.

The Normative Context Of Advice As Social Support, Daena Goldsmith, Kristine Fitch Dec 1996

The Normative Context Of Advice As Social Support, Daena Goldsmith, Kristine Fitch

Kristine Muñoz

Much of the existing research on social support overlooks the communicative processes that link supportive acts to beneficial effects. The present study represents an alternative approach: The authors document the multiple goals and implications of advice and the situational, conversational, and cultural context far the evaluation of advice among some White, middle-class, U.S. Americans. On the basis of observation of 112 advice episodes and interviews with 18 informants, the authors identify three dilemmas of seeking, receiving, and giving advice: Advice may be seen as helpful and caring or as butting in; advice may be experienced as honest or supportive; and …

Cynical Hostility, Powerful Others Control Expectancies, And Patient Adherence In Hemodialysis, Alan Christensen, J. Wiebe, W. Lawton

Alan J. Christensen

The present study examined the joint role of cynical hostility and powerful others health locus of control expectancies in predicting regimen adherence in a sample of center hemodialysis patients. METHOD: Forty-eight hemodialysis patients completed the Cook-Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale and the Powerful Others Health Locus of Control (PHLC) scale. Adherence to the fluid-restriction and phosphorus reduction components of the treatment regimen was assessed by examining patients' interdialysis session weight gains and serum phosphorus (P) levels. RESULTS: In a hierarchical regression analysis, higher hostility was associated with significantly higher serum P levels indicating poorer dietary and medication adherence. The main effect …

Agency Heads’ Assessments Of Sunset Review In Texas, Usa, Andrew Ewoh

Andrew I.E. Ewoh

What type of change results from the sunset review process as an oversight instrument of accountability in government? Using data from a recent survey, this research develops a model for examining sunset changes. The research shows that there is a significant relationship between the outcome of sunset review and the type of recommendations adopted by the legislature. Moreover, agency age, legislative floor debates, and the level of board/commission decision making are important predictors of whether the agency is reestablished. Other results suggest that an agency with more influence and constituency support would easily resist change. Also, agencies that apply a …
