Subaltern Sombrero Studies: Underclasses Get Notice, Paul J. Rich Dec 1996

Subaltern Sombrero Studies: Underclasses Get Notice, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

Latin American subaltern studies are in vogue, the meaning of "subaltern" having been enlarged since its origins in Asian studies and description as "history-from-below.'"Whether social history was a sufficiently descriptive term and subaltern studies simply a more flashy way to describe such investigations could be argued. In any event, in regards to the study of Latin American "minorities" (is any group, given the continent's enormous variety, really a majority?), the subject still encounters a number of self-imposed, if diminishing, constraints that academia, in the past, has masochistically assumed: gender blinders, practical illiteracy where the indigenous peoples and religious groups (and …

Opus Dei plays an important role in Mexico and Latin America, and invites comparisons with Freemasonry. Although they appear to be arch rivals, the two movements have certain similarities.

Sulfur Dioxide Compliance Of A Regulated Utility, Don Fullerton, Shaun P. Mcdermott, Jonathan P. Caulkins Dec 1996

Sulfur Dioxide Compliance Of A Regulated Utility, Don Fullerton, Shaun P. Mcdermott, Jonathan P. Caulkins

Don Fullerton

Electric utilities can reduce sulfur dioxide emissions through a variety of strategies, and the cost of abatement can be minimized using tradable permits as under the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Previous theoretical work has analyzed effects of public utility commission regulations on a utility's choice between permits and a single continuous "abatement technology." Our numerical model considers discrete choices among three abatement technologies. Using illustrative parameters, we find that regulatory rules could more than double the cost of sulfur dioxide compliance. They can even make costs with allowance trading higher than costs with command and control regulation.

Endogenous Substitution Among Energy Resources And Global Warming, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, James Roumasset, Kin-Ping Tse Dec 1996

Endogenous Substitution Among Energy Resources And Global Warming, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, James Roumasset, Kin-Ping Tse

Ujjayant Chakravorty

The theory of resource extraction has focused primarily on extraction when there is a single, homogeneous demand for the resource. In reality, however, we observe the simultaneous extraction of different resources such as oil, coal, and natural gas and multiple demands such as transportation, residential and commercial heating, and electricity generation. This paper develops a model with multiple resources and grades and multiple demands. The model is simulated with extraction cost, estimated reserves, and energy demand data for the world economy. It is shown that if historical rates of cost reduction in the production of solar energy are maintained, more …

Estimating Economic Impacts From Tourism, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Deyong Zhou, John Yanagida, Pingsun Leung Dec 1996

Estimating Economic Impacts From Tourism, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Deyong Zhou, John Yanagida, Pingsun Leung

Ujjayant Chakravorty

Economists have traditionally used input-output (IO) analysis to examine the impacts of tourism on the economy of a region. This paper introduces a relatively new and alternative technique, computable general equilibrium (CGE). The two approaches are compared and then used to analyze, as an illustration, the impacts on Hawaii’s economy from a reduction in visitor expenditure. The study concludes that the results of the IO model are similar in magnitude to those of the CGE model but generally higher and that sectors closely associated with tourism exhibit the largest effects. The ability to account for inter-sectoral resource flows is a …

The Plight Of Maids In Relation To Exploitation And Domestic Aggression: A Case Study Of Nakuru Municipality (M.A. Thesis), Jospeter M. Mbuba Dec 1996

The Plight Of Maids In Relation To Exploitation And Domestic Aggression: A Case Study Of Nakuru Municipality (M.A. Thesis), Jospeter M. Mbuba

Prof. Jospeter M. Mbuba

In this report, the researcher presents the findings of a study investigating the factors behind mistreatment of maids by their employers. The study was carried out from November 1994 to February 1995 in Nakuru Municipality, Nakuru District. Realizing that there is no one overall theory of exploitation and aggression, the study was based on two theoretical perspectives; the theory of aggression and the Marxist Social Class Theory. A number of distinct areas were covered in the literature review, including the entire realm of domestic violence where aggression and general mistreatment of maids lie. It was found that literature on domestic …

Where To From Here? A Policy Research Agenda Based On The Analysis Of Administrative Data, Dennis P. Culhane, Stephen Metraux Dec 1996

Where To From Here? A Policy Research Agenda Based On The Analysis Of Administrative Data, Dennis P. Culhane, Stephen Metraux

Dennis P. Culhane

This article outlines a policy research agenda based on the analysis of administrative data. Computerized records of client characteristics and their related shelter utilization patterns offer researchers a rich source of longitudinal data that makes possible a wide range of investigations and can be analyzed by using an array of multivariate statistical tools. Specifically, this article discusses the contributions administrative data can make to (1) enumerating and determining the characteristics of the homeless population, (2) understanding the effect of homelessness on related public systems, (3) gauging the effect of policy interventions on the use of homeless services, (4) evaluating the …

Promoting Identity Development: A New Role For Academic Faculty, Scott E. Hall, Susan J. Sears

Scott E. Hall, Ph.D., LPCC-S

This study examined the influence of a structured curricular intervention on the personal and social identity development of college students. The authors implemented a pretest/posttest design using the revised version of the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status-2 (EOMEIS-2). Significant posttest results supported faculty’s role in developing students’ capabilities beyond the intellectual domain. Finally, the authors discuss collaboration between academic faculty and student affairs practitioners in contributing toward students’ identity development.

The Home As "Field": Households And Homework In Rural Appalachia, Ann M. Oberhauser Dec 1996

The Home As "Field": Households And Homework In Rural Appalachia, Ann M. Oberhauser

Ann Oberhauser

Locating Lydia's house in rural McDowell Country had been a challenge. We finally stopped at a small post office to ask directions and were directed to a house across a nearby stream. As we reached our destination, a dozen chickens, two goats, and several puppies greeted us in the front yard. Lydia stepped onto the side porch and invited us inside. "Be careful on the stairs," she warned, "my husband still hasn't fixed them rotten boards." Upon entering a small kitchen, Lydia showed us some pictures of the children in her home-based day care. In the living room, a coal-burning …

Patient Adherence In Chronic Illness: Personality And Coping In Context, John Wiebe, Alan Christensen Nov 1996

Patient Adherence In Chronic Illness: Personality And Coping In Context, John Wiebe, Alan Christensen

Alan J. Christensen

Previous reviews have concluded that there is no evidence for a predictable association between person factors and regimen adherence in chronic illness. The brief current review of the literature reveals that past work has been limited by the lack of a common structural theory of personality and the failure to consider the interaction of person factors with disease and treatment context. Application of the five-factor model of personality to adherence research will reduce divergence in the field and and in the orientation and interpretation of future work. Evidence suggests that an interactive perspective recognizing the moderating influence of contextual factors …

Economics In A Family Way, Ted Bergstrom Nov 1996

Economics In A Family Way, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper is an advertisement for some facts and ideas that I think likely to lead to a richer theory of the economics of the family. The discussion references many papers from anthropology and biology. Because of the intimate connection between the family and reproduction, it should not be surprising that there is much to be learned about the economics of the family from the study of evolutionary biology. Given the increased prevalence in recent decades of unwed parenthood, divorce with sequential monogamy, and ``non-traditional'' family arrangements, it seems that anthropological studies of alternative family structures would help us to …

Eating Disturbance And Body Image: A Comparison Of A Community Sample Of Adult Black And White Women, Denise E. Wilfley, George B. Schreiber, Kathleen M. Pike, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, David J. Wright, Judith Rodin Nov 1996

Eating Disturbance And Body Image: A Comparison Of A Community Sample Of Adult Black And White Women, Denise E. Wilfley, George B. Schreiber, Kathleen M. Pike, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, David J. Wright, Judith Rodin

Ruth Striegel Weissman

This study examined racial differences in eating disorder symptomatology in a community-based sample of middle-aged adult Black and White women and investigated predictors of body image dissatisfaction in these two different racial groups, since most research has focused on young adult White women. Black and White women reported comparable levels of eating disturbance. However, after controlling for degree of overweight, White women had significantly greater rates of body dissatisfaction than Black women. Nonetheless, both racial groups reported considerable body image dissatisfaction and similar factors were found to predict body dissatisfaction for Black and White women. Our data and other recent …

Social Marketing And Diffusion-Based Strategies For Communicating With Unique Populations: Hiv Prevention In San Francisco, James Dearing, Everett Rogers, Gary Meyer, Michelle Campo Sep 1996

Social Marketing And Diffusion-Based Strategies For Communicating With Unique Populations: Hiv Prevention In San Francisco, James Dearing, Everett Rogers, Gary Meyer, Michelle Campo

Michelle L. Campo

We conducted a 2-year investigation of the extent to which strategies based on social marketing and diffusion of innovations concepts are used in preventive health communication with unique (highly ostracized) populations. Of the 49 organizations in San Francisco that operate HIV prevention programs (N=100),programs that most highly targeted unique populations were surveyed. Personal interviews were then conducted with 38 staff leaders who operated the most and least effective programs. Audiotapes and transcripts were content analyzed to identify the strategies used by program staff. Strategies based on social marketing concepts were more prevalent than strategies based on the diffusion of innovations. …
