Economic Development And The Distribution Of Land Rents In Singapore: A Georgist Implementation, Sock-Yong Phang Sep 1996

Economic Development And The Distribution Of Land Rents In Singapore: A Georgist Implementation, Sock-Yong Phang

PHANG Sock Yong

Independent Singapore, which has a tradition of free trade, has implemented large doses of Henry George's prescriptions. It has successfully captured land rents for redistribution through its land acquisition, public housing and other programs. These policies have been instrumental in the successful economic development of the island city state. Industrial estates on state-owned land were leased to foreign multinationals for export-oriented manufacturing which created the bulk of jobs in the sector. Commercial developments are built by the program. Affordable 99-year leasehold housing, built by the state, provided added economic incentives for employment, and helped keep inflation and wages down. Private …

Hospitals: The Hidden Research System, Diana Hicks, Sylvan Katz

Diana Hicks

Using co-authored scientific papers as indicators of research collaboration the pattern of research linkages in the UK during the 1980s is analysed. All sectors collaborate with each other at a rate proportional to publishing size to a first approximation. However, there are deviations from this pattern. Analyzing these deviations, two groups of sectors are found that collaborate with each other more than expected: the GIPU group composed of government, industry, polytechnics and universities, and the HSNR group composed of hospitals, special health authorities (SHAs), non-profit organisations and research councils. This suggests that a biomedical innovation system co-exists with the more …

Organizations: New Directions For Development Communication, Chukwuka Onwumechili

Chukwuka Onwumechili

This paper makes a case for the study of organizational communication as essential to development communication. It briefly traces the history of development communication and how mass media became synonymous with development communi- cation. The assumptions underlying mass media's pre-emi- nence is revisited in order to make a case for organizational com- munication in an African environment. In the later sections, it describes a model for the study of development systems and organizational communication components.

Household Responses To Pricing Garbage By The Bag, Don Fullerton, Thomas C. Kinnaman Aug 1996

Household Responses To Pricing Garbage By The Bag, Don Fullerton, Thomas C. Kinnaman

Don Fullerton

This paper employs individual household data to estimate the effect of per-unit pricing on the weight of garbage, the number of containers, the weight per can, and the amount of recycling. We also provide two indirect measures of illegal dumping. The data are based on a natural experiment that provides a unique opportunity to study human behavior in response to a change in price. On July 1, 1992, the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, implemented a program to charge $0.80 per 32-gallon bag or can of residential garbage collected at the curb. Before and after the implementation of this program, we …

It is hard to overstate the importance of expert testimony in American courtrooms. Much of this testimony concerns scientific matters that are beyond the ken of ordinary experience.  In cases where scientific matters play a central role, jurors may give substantial weight to expert testimony or even treat it as dispositive.  Standards pertaining to the admissibility of scientific testimony are critical to the outcome in many trials.

Income Prospects And Age At Marriage, Ted Bergstrom, Bob Schoeni Aug 1996

Income Prospects And Age At Marriage, Ted Bergstrom, Bob Schoeni

Ted C Bergstrom

In an earlier paper Courtship as a Waiting Game, Mark Bagnoli and I proposed a theory that explained why it is the case that in almost every society and at almost all recorded times, the average age at marriage of men exceeds that of women. An additional prediction of this model was that men who married later in life would turn out to have higher incomes when they reach maturity than those who marry young. The current paper reviews this theory and tests it with U.S. data. Consistent with our theory, we find that there is a strong positive relationship …

Perceived Health Competence, Health Locus Of Control, And Patient Adherence In Renal Dialysis, Alan Christensen, John Wiebe, Eric Benotsch, William Lawton Jul 1996

Perceived Health Competence, Health Locus Of Control, And Patient Adherence In Renal Dialysis, Alan Christensen, John Wiebe, Eric Benotsch, William Lawton

Alan J. Christensen

An emerging view in the literature regarding health locus of control (HLC) and health behavior suggests that HLC beliefs might affect behavior only through the interaction of HLC with other health-related expectancies. We examined internal and powerful others HLC beliefs as moderators of the relationship between a recently developed measure of perceived health competence and medical regimen adherence in 81 renal dialysis patients. The hypothesized interaction was significant, suggesting a moderating role for HLC. The pattern of the interaction differed from prediction. Greater perceived health competence was associated with more favorable adherence only for those patients scoring low on internal …

1. The Law And Psychology Of The Child Witness. (Review Of The Book Child Witnesses: Fragile Voices In The American Legal System, By L. S. Mcgough. ), Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

McGough's goal is to summarize the developmental psychological research relevant to children's capacities as witnesses and to make recommendations for how the courts should receive children's testimony. In her review, she concludes that children under the age of 12 are deficient: They encode less detail, they fantasize more, they confuse fantasy with reality, they incorporate script based knowledge into their memory, and they are suggestible, both because they acquiesce to authority and because their memory is susceptible to external influence.

Thomas D. Lyon

Do abused children refuse to disclose their abuse because they have been threatened by their perpetrators? In Jeopardy in the Courtroom: A Scientific Analysis of Children's Testimony, a book that many believe may have a substantial impact on child witness law and practice, Professors Stephen Ceci and Maggie Bruck argue that there is little empirical basis for this "professional `lore"' (Ceci & Bruck, 1995, pp. 300-301).

ABSTRACT. Objective. This study tested four hypotheses: ( 1) a high percentage of 9- and 10-year-old girls are already trying to lose weight; ( 2) more white than black girls are trying to lose weight; ( 3) more black than white girls are trying to gain weight; and ( 4) weight modification efforts of preadolescent girls are influenced by factors other than race, such as maternal criticism, body dissatisfaction, and socioeconomic status.

Positive And Negative Affect In Rheumatoid Arthritis: Increased Specificity In The Assessment Of Emotional Adjustment, Timoth Smith, Alan Christensen May 1996

Positive And Negative Affect In Rheumatoid Arthritis: Increased Specificity In The Assessment Of Emotional Adjustment, Timoth Smith, Alan Christensen

Alan J. Christensen

Because most patients with chronic medical illness do not suffer from diagnosable depressive conditions, models of normal emotional functioning might be useful in assessing the emotional consequences of physical illness. In this study of 72 male and female patients with rheumatoid arthritis, we examined the Watson and Tellegen (1985) two-dimensional model in this regard. Depression scores were associated, independently, with both positive and negative affect. Pain, daily hassles, and cognitive distortion were associated with depression and negative affect but not with positive affect. Positive daily events were associated with positive affect but not negative affect. This suggests that the routine …

An Appraisal Of Local Exchange And Trading Systems In The United Kingdom, Colin C. Williams May 1996

An Appraisal Of Local Exchange And Trading Systems In The United Kingdom, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

During the past few years, Local Exchange and Trading Systems (LETS) have emerged through the
United Kingdom and are being widely heralded as a new tool for promoting community development.
Indeed, 64 per cent of local authorities have expressed an intention to develop a LETS in their area (Gibbs et al, 1995). However, there has been little, if any, appraisal of LETS which can inform such policy initiatives. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to report the results of a national survey of the origins, objectives, growth, magnitude, character and impacts of LETS. Arising out of this, several alterations …

Obat Kista Bartholin Terbukti Ampuh Dan Aman Tanpa Efek Samping, User Id

Rizky Herbal

Penyebab Timbulnya Kista Bartholin

Salah satu penyebab kista bartolin adalah infeksi di daerah kelamin. Meski tak …
