Purchasing Power Parity, Unit Roots And Dynamic Structure, Douglas G. Steigerwald
Purchasing Power Parity, Unit Roots And Dynamic Structure, Douglas G. Steigerwald
Douglas G. Steigerwald
Recent studies of puchasing power parity (PPP) account for the possible presence of unit roots in nominal exchange rates and relative price indicies by applying standard unit-root tests to real exchange rates, which are ratios of nominal exchange rates and relative price indicies. These studies occasionally find evidence of PPP but, as a whole, the evidence is not definitive. Standard unit-root tests impose a restrictive dynamic structure between nominal exchange rates and relative price indicies. I specify and estimate a generalized dynamic structure. I reject the dynamic restrictions implicit in standard unit-root tests of PPP, and find stronger evidence of …

Characteristics Of The Effective Therapist: Further Analyses Of The Nimh Tdcrp, Sidney J. Blatt, Charles A. Sanislow, David C. Zuroff, Paul A. Pilkonis
Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.
Analyses of the data of the National Institute of Mental Health-sponsored Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program have primarily examined the effects of types of treatment and patient characteristics on outcome, but scant attention has been directed toward evaluating the contributions of the therapist. With an aggregate of residualized therapeutic change scores of the 5 primary outcome measures for each patient at termination as an overall measure of improvement, an average therapeutic effectiveness measure was derived for each of the 28 therapists based on the outcome of the patients they saw in active treatment. The distribution of the therapists was …
Communication And Community In A City Under Siege, Everett Rogers, James Dearing, Nagesh Rao, Michelle Campo
Communication And Community In A City Under Siege, Everett Rogers, James Dearing, Nagesh Rao, Michelle Campo
Michelle L. Campo
The history of urban life has been shaped and directed by the impact of disaster and disease, variables that have not disappeared in the postmodern age. Certainly, a deadly epidemic destroys and alters communication relationships while at the same time creating new communication needs and possibilities. The structure, social institutions, and policies of cities in part determine the impact and response to affliction. The authors analyze how the city of San Francisco was disrupted by the AIDS epidemic and how HIV / AIDS prevention campaigns sought to slow the epidemic. Both the epidemic and the communication response to it altered …

Autobiographical Memory For Childhood Events: Patterns Of Recall In Psychiatric Patients With A History Of Alleged Trauma., Evan D. Parks
Autobiographical Memory For Childhood Events: Patterns Of Recall In Psychiatric Patients With A History Of Alleged Trauma., Evan D. Parks
Evan D Parks
SOCIAL scientists are currently being pressed upon by the legal and scientific communities to provide more definitive explanations regarding the nature and functions of memory (Loftus 1993). At the forefront of this debate is autobiographical memory. Autobiographical memory is a subclassification of memory within the declarative memory system and signifies memory for one's own personal life experiences in the recent and/or remote past. This study investigates the relationship between early trauma and memory for childhood events in adult psychiatric patients. The findings suggest that patients with an alleged history of trauma have a measurably different pattern of recall for early …

Within-Session Changes In The Vi Response Function: Separating Food Density From Elapsed Session Time, James Dougan, Laura Campbell
Within-Session Changes In The Vi Response Function: Separating Food Density From Elapsed Session Time, James Dougan, Laura Campbell
James Dougan
Previous studies examining the relationship between response rate and reinforcement rate on variable- interval schedules (the variable-interval response function) have confounded elapsed session time with within-session changes in food density. The present experiments attempted to manipulate these factors independently and thus isolate their effects on responding. In Experiment 1, 7 rats pressed a bar for food on a series of four variable-interval schedules (7.5 s, 15 s, 30 s, and 480 s). Elapsed session time was held constant while food density was manipulated via a presession feeding. Changes in food density altered the form of the variable-interval response function, independently …

Garbage, Recycling, And Illicit Burning Or Dumping, Don Fullerton, Thomas C. Kinnaman
Garbage, Recycling, And Illicit Burning Or Dumping, Don Fullerton, Thomas C. Kinnaman
Thomas C. Kinnaman
With garbage and recycling as the only two disposal options, we confirm prior results that the optimal curbside fee for garbage collection equals the direct resource cost plus external environmental cost. When illicit burning or dumping is a third disposal option that cannot be taxed directly, the optimal curbside tax on garbage changes sign. The optimal fee structure is a deposit-refund system: a tax on all output plus a rebate on proper disposal through either recycling or garbage collection. The output tax helps achieve the first-best allocation even though it affects the choice between consumption and untaxed leisure.

Personality And Patient Adherence: Correlates Of The Five-Factor Model In Renal Dialysis, Alan Christensen, Timothy Smith
Alan J. Christensen
The five-factor taxonomy of personality traits has received increasing attention in the literature regarding personality correlates of health outcomes and behaviors. We examined the association of the five NEO Five-Factor Inventory dimensions to medical regimen adherence in a sample of 72 renal dialysis patients. Results indicated that Conscientiousness (Dimension III) is a five-factor trait significantly associated with adherence to the medication regimen. No other NEO-FFI dimension was significantly associated with patient adherence.
