Patriarchy In Old Mexico, Paul J. Rich Mar 1995

Patriarchy In Old Mexico, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

Fraternal studies are adjacent to gender studies -- fraternal societies have often been exclusively male or female, and research into such societies inevitably raises questions of gender. This review of Stern's landmark book sustains that position.

On The Evolution Of Altruistic Ethical Rules For Siblings, Ted Bergstrom Feb 1995

On The Evolution Of Altruistic Ethical Rules For Siblings, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper explores the evolutionary foundations of altruism among siblings and extends biologists' kin-selection theory to a richer class of games between relatives. It shows that a population will resist invasion by dominant mutant genes if individuals maximize a "semi-Kantian" utility function in games with their siblings. It is shown that a population that resists invasion by dominant mutants may be invaded by recessive mutants. Conditions are found under which a population resists invasion by dominant and also by recessive mutants. (JEL C70, D10, D63)

Serial Numbers And Hallmarks On Flutes From The Workshop Of Monzani & Hill, Amy M. Shaw Feb 1995

Serial Numbers And Hallmarks On Flutes From The Workshop Of Monzani & Hill, Amy M. Shaw

Amy M. Shaw

The Italian flutist Tebaldo Monzani established a very successful flutemaking firm in London, circa 1800. The year 1808 marked the beginning of his twenty-year partnership with the instrument maker Henry Hill. As Monzani & Co., the two produced a wide variety of finely crafted and innovative flutes. When Monzani retired in 1829, Hill continued alone, later making his sons partners, until the firm's stock was finally sold at auction in 1845. This article seeks to establish a chronology of selected extant Monzani and Hill flutes based on the serial numbers, hallmarks, and the form of signature and street address found …

The Cost Effectiveness Of Preoperative Autologous Blood Donations, Jeff Etchason, Lawrence Petz, Emmett Keeler, Loni Calhoun, Steven Kleinman, Cynthia Snider, Arlene Fink, Robert Brook Feb 1995

The Cost Effectiveness Of Preoperative Autologous Blood Donations, Jeff Etchason, Lawrence Petz, Emmett Keeler, Loni Calhoun, Steven Kleinman, Cynthia Snider, Arlene Fink, Robert Brook

Emmett Keeler

Background: Since the recognition that human immunodeficiency virus is transmissible by blood transfusion there has been increasing public and professional support for autologous blood donations before elective surgery. Autologous blood donation is, however, a more expensive process than the donation of allogeneic blood by community volunteers. Furthermore, there have been recent improvements in the safety of the volunteer blood supply. Methods: We used a decision-analysis model to assess the cost effectiveness of donating autologous blood for four surgical procedures. Cost data were collected from the observation of transfusion practice at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1992. Estimates of …

3. False Allegations And False Denials In Child Sexual Abuse., Thomas D. Lyon Jan 1995

3. False Allegations And False Denials In Child Sexual Abuse., Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

The amicus brief in the Kelly Michaels case ignores the risks that abused children will fail to reveal abuse unless direct and sometimes leading questions are asked. Although the brief correctly criticizes previous research for understating the risks that aggressive interviewing practices will lead young children to make false allegations of abuse, it overstates the likelihood that false allegations occur by overlooking the aspects of the Kelly Michaels case and the research it inspired that are unlike the typical abuse case.  The author discusses factors that lead abused children to falsely deny abuse and that minimize the likelihood that nonabused …

Physical Properties Of Selected Soils By Erosion Class, Alice Jones, Bill Lowery, James Swan, Tom Schumacher Dec 1994

Physical Properties Of Selected Soils By Erosion Class, Alice Jones, Bill Lowery, James Swan, Tom Schumacher

Alice Jones

The effects of soil erosion on soil fertility and yield have been documented with data as early as the 1900s, but there is limited literature relating soil erosion and soil physical properties. A regional research project (NC-174) was established in 1984 to elucidate the effects of erosion on soil productivity, with respect to changes in soil physical properties, and to determine the potential for using computer models to simulate this effect. Data are presented from 15 soils (sites) located in eight states in the North Central United States. Based on the thickness of topsoil, two to three levels of prior …

Darwinism Evolving: Systems Dynamics And The Genealogy Of Natural Selection, David Depew, Bruce Weber Dec 1994

Darwinism Evolving: Systems Dynamics And The Genealogy Of Natural Selection, David Depew, Bruce Weber

David J Depew

Darwinism Evolving examines the Darwinian research tradition in evolutionary biology from its inception to its turbulent present, arguing that recent advances in modeling the nonlinear dynamics of complex systems may well catalyze the next major phase of Darwinian evolutionism. While Darwinism has successfully resisted reduction to physics, the authors point out that it has from the outset developed and applied its core explanatory concept, natural selection, by borrowing models from dynamics, a branch of physics. The recent development of complex systems dynamics may afford Darwinism yet another occasion to expand its explanatory power.Darwinism's use of dynamical models has received insufficient attention …

Pragmatism From Progressivism To Post- Modernism, David Depew, Robert Hollinger Dec 1994

Pragmatism From Progressivism To Post- Modernism, David Depew, Robert Hollinger

David J Depew

American pragmatism can be best understood against the background of 20th-century American culture and politics. The essays in this volume, by philosophers, cultural critics, and historians, explore the development of pragmatism in this context. The emphasis in this volume is on the interrelations between the philosophical or foundational issues raised by pragmatism as a philosophical movement, and the cultural, political, and educational programs that have been associated with pragmatism from James, Dewey, and Mead to Rorty and Cornel West. The book is divided into three parts, reflecting the periods of Progressivism, Positivism, and Postmodernism. The contributors explore the ways in …

Collection Development In The Field Of Communication Studies, Jeanne Pavy, Ann Power Dec 1994

Collection Development In The Field Of Communication Studies, Jeanne Pavy, Ann Power

Jeanne Pavy

The area of communication with its multistrand, interdisciplinary webbing presents a challenge to the bibliographer seeking to develop a collection. A project at the University of Alabama is described in which a subject-special policy was written to address the complex issues involved in collection, the format selected for use and the collegial working relationship between representatives from the College of Communication and the university subject bibliographer. Detailed are the outcome of this investigation as well as a description of the policy which outlines parameters for six fields of study-advertising, public relations, telecommunication, film, speech communication, and journalism.

Newsworkers: Toward A History Of The Rank And File, Hanno Hardt, Bonnie Brennen Dec 1994

Newsworkers: Toward A History Of The Rank And File, Hanno Hardt, Bonnie Brennen

Bonnie Brennen

Focusing on the period from the 1850s through the 1930s, the contributors show how issues of labor and class have been far more important in the formation of media institutions than previous accounts concede. These essays recover the history of ethnic and cultural diversity-including the contributions of women-that have enriched the process of communication.
