How is the missionary force for the twenty-first Century to be trained? This is the challenge that emerges from this provocative book as it focuses on the task of effective missionary training. Recent increases in the number of crime-related commodities (e.g., burglar alarms, security systems, private security forces, and crime-related television news programs) are critically examined in relation to mildly fluctuating national crime rates. Increasing sales of crime-related and target-hardening products during the time when crime oscillated only slightly are explained as capitalism's ability to create commodities from both social problems and unfounded needs. Using secondary data, I describe these crime trends and the consumption of crime-prevention goods. A study seeks to determine the degree, location and impact of political interference or pressure exerted on police chief executives by public and private officials. Questionnaire data were gathered from 115 Kentucky police chiefs in 1989. Respondents reported having to cope with varying levels of political pressure and interference, some legitimate and some illegitimate. Pressure was exerted in the following areas: (1) hiring officers; (2) promoting or demoting officers; (3) arresting offenders or enforcing specific laws; (4) making unnecessary changes in personnel assignments, such as transfers to and from specialized units; and (5) providing special or unusual services to individuals …

A series of experiments explored a form of object-specific priming. In all experiments a preview field containing two or more letters is followed by a target letter that is to be named. The displays are designed to produce a perceptual interpretation of the target as a new state of an object that reviously contained one of the primes. The link is produced in different experiments by a shared location, by a shared relative position in a moving pattern, or by successive appearance in the same moving frame. The roots of Southern American music are located in the music of the eighteenth-century English, Irish and lowland Scots who migrated to North America. As they settled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Cumberland Gap of Appalachia, they brought their songs that had been a part of their oral histories and cultures for at least two centuries. I develop adaptive estimators for linear regression with serially correlated errors. The efficiency results hold even when the serial correlation structure is unknown. Simulations indicate that efficiency gains can be substantial with samples of only 50 observations. We apply the method to a study of forward exchange rates.

Economic theory predicts an inverse relationship between the quantity of a commodity supplied to the marketplace and the equilibrium market price of that commodity. This prediction was tested in three experiments. Pigeons responded on simple variable-interval schedules, and quantity of reinforcement supplied was varied in a different way in each experiment. In Experiment 1, quantity supplied was varied by manipulating reinforcement rate while keeping session length constant. Recent epidemiological research has identified a variety of interpersonal risk factors as possibly contributing to the development of cardiovascular disease, including reduced social support and increased conflict. Related psychosomatic models identify heightened cardiovascular reactivity as a pathophysiological mechanism linking these psychosocial risk factors and subsequent illness. However, cardiovascular reactivity has largely been studied in nonsocial settings, raising concerns about the relevance of this mechanism to the psychosocial risk factors identified in epidemiological research
