A Multi-Disciplinary Interpretation Of Migration: Amenity Capitalization In Both Labor And Land Markets, Philip E. Graves, Robert L. Sexton, Thomas A. Knapp
Robert L Sexton
Various disciplines have produced models to explain and predict migration. A model is presented providing a taxonomy through which interdisciplinary insights can be synthesized. The imperfect information view emphasizes the role of wage differentials as representing arbitragible real utility differences. The perfect information approach holds that wage and rent differentials are compensating differentials, eliminating real utility variation over space. Moreover, markets compress diverse aspects of spatial variation in welfare, otherwise difficult to quantify, into compensating wage and rent differentials. Rents tend to capitalize the variation in a host of amenities, thereby substantially reducing the need for a potential migrant to …

George Orwell: Socialist Or Liberal? Big Brother And The Abuse Of Power, Noel B. Reynolds
George Orwell: Socialist Or Liberal? Big Brother And The Abuse Of Power, Noel B. Reynolds
Noel B Reynolds
For although he was too strongly independent in his thinking to accept the Marxist or socialist dogmas of his associates, because they did not seem to square with experience, and though he admired the tough resistance of English character and legal institutions to tyranny, Orwell never did tumble to the understanding of man and government which had shaped each over the centuries. Failing to see the constants in human nature as the key to the political problem, he looked around the world both as he perceived it and his literary fellows portrayed it, and concluded that power lust was the …

The Impact Of Nontraditional Training On The Occupational Attainment Of Women, Michael Seeborg, Irmtraud Streker-Seeborg, Abera Zegeye
The Impact Of Nontraditional Training On The Occupational Attainment Of Women, Michael Seeborg, Irmtraud Streker-Seeborg, Abera Zegeye
Michael Seeborg
In this paper we examine the effect of nontraditional training on the occupational attainment of economically disadvantaged women. Using a logit model of occupational attainment, we found that women who received nontraditional training under the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) were much less likely than their male counterparts to be employed in male-dominated occupations, and also received somewhat lower hourly wages. These results suggest that nontraditional training alone may not be an effective way of reducing the occupational segregation of low-income women.
Come To Tana Toraja, 'Land Of The Heavenly Kings': Travel Agents As Brokers Of Ethnicity, Kathleen Adams
Come To Tana Toraja, 'Land Of The Heavenly Kings': Travel Agents As Brokers Of Ethnicity, Kathleen Adams
Kathleen M. Adams
This paper examines the role of tourist literature in the genesis of ethnic stereotypes. Considering the case of the Toraja of Sulawesi (Indonesia), it is suggested that travel agents are brokers in ethnicity, travel brochures being the tools of their trade. In the process of marketing images of exotic places and peoples, travel brochures draw upon a small set of indigenous ethnic markers, elaborating upon them to provide a mental grid through which the tourist filters his perceptions while abroad. These travel brochure images become indices of “authenticity” and the ethnic stereotypes generated by them become reified during the course …

The National Supported Work Demonstration, Hollister Robinson, Peter Kemper, Rebecca Maynard
REBECCA A MAYNARD
In this edited work, leading social scientists examine the intent, design, and administration of the Supported Work Demonstration programs in 10 cities, serving large numbers of long-term welfare recipients, ex-addicts, ex-offenders and young school dropouts. Eligible individuals were randomly assigned to the offer of the supported employment experience or to a business as usual control condition. The study samples were followed for up to three years following enrollment. The findings are synthesized through a comprehensive benefit-cost analysis.

Property Rights And Taxation In The Australian Minerals Sector, Ted C. Bergstrom
Property Rights And Taxation In The Australian Minerals Sector, Ted C. Bergstrom
Ted C Bergstrom
Mineral deposits in Australia are generally owned by states. Exploration licenses and mining leases are granted to private firms. They are not sold to the highest bidder but are awarded according to a system of "work program bidding". Such bids entail a promise to undertake a certain amount of exploration expenditure within a specified time interval. Typically a firm that finds a commercially viable mineral deposit is given preference in obtaining a lease to exploit this deposit, but the lease is subject to the conditio that the firm spend at least some specified minimum on developing the lease within a …
