The Existence Of Maximal Elements And Equilibria In The Absence Of Transitivity, Ted Bergstrom Aug 1975

The Existence Of Maximal Elements And Equilibria In The Absence Of Transitivity, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper generalizes results of Ky Fan and Hugo Sonnenschein on the existence of maximal elements for non-transitive binary relations. It proves a generalization of Nash's theorem on the existence of non-cooperative equilibrium. It also shows that existence of competitive equilibrium can be proved as a consequence of the existence of a maximal element for an appropriately chosen binary relation.

The Core When Strategies Are Restricted By Law, Ted Bergstrom Mar 1975

The Core When Strategies Are Restricted By Law, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

The alpha-core is defined to be the set of feasible allocations such that no coalition can do better for its members by selecting alternative strategies given “worst-case” assumptions about the behavior of other players. This paper explores the way that the alpha-core of a game is affected by restrictions on the legally admissible strategies of the players. It also explores the relation between Lindahl equilibrium and alpha-cores with suitable restrictions on strategies.

What Is The Public Interest, Robert D. Cooter Dec 1974

What Is The Public Interest, Robert D. Cooter

Robert Cooter

The proper foundation of welfare economics is a characterization of the fundamental principles embodied in our moral and legal framework, which constitutes a conception of the public interest. We may use a conception of the public interest as a predictive or expiratory device. We may also use a conception of the public interest as a guide to making policy. Welfare economics should formulate and analyze different conceptions of the public interest. There will always be tension over which one is right, but that does not initiate an academic inquiry.

The Conceptual Determinants Of Two Archetypal City Forms, Nicholas Patricios Dec 1973

The Conceptual Determinants Of Two Archetypal City Forms, Nicholas Patricios

Nicholas Patricios

The two urban spatial forms analyzed from a cosmological point of view are the circular and the orthogonal. The circular symbolism of the Near Eastern cities is considered first followed by the Plato's theoretical city of Atlantis and then the ideal cities of the Renaissance architects. Circular cities of the 19th century, those of the Utopian Socialists, had in contrast an ideological basis. In addition to the practical basis for the orthogonal layout conceptual influences are evident in the grid cities of the ancient Greeks, in the Spanish Laws of the Indies, and those cities designed later to express the …
