Cephalopod Complex Cognition, Jennifer Mather
Cephalopod Complex Cognition, Jennifer Mather
Jennifer Mather, PhD
Cephalopods, especially octopuses, offer a different model for the development of complex cognitive operations. They are phylogenetically distant from the mammals and birds that we normally think of as ‘intelligent’ and without the pervasive social interactions and long lives that we associate with this capacity. Additionally, they have a distributed nervous system — central brain, peripheral coordination of arm actions and a completely separate skin appearance system based on muscle-controlled chromatophores. Recent research has begun to show how these apparently separate systems are coordinated. Learning and cognition are used toward prey, in antipredator actions and in courtship. These examples show …
Mating Games Squid Play: Reproductive Behaviour And Sexual Skin Displays In Caribbean Reef Squid Sepioteuthis Sepioidea, Jennifer Mather
Mating Games Squid Play: Reproductive Behaviour And Sexual Skin Displays In Caribbean Reef Squid Sepioteuthis Sepioidea, Jennifer Mather
Jennifer Mather, PhD
Observation of the sexual interactions of Sepioteuthis sepioidea squid during the short reproductive stage of their lives showed a scramble competition system, with both male and female polygyny. Mature females were faithful to a specific location in the daytime, whereas males moved from group to group and formed short-term consortships with females. Males defended females from other males, particularly with an agonistic Zebra display. Male–female pairs exchanged Saddle-Stripe displays, after which males might display an on–off Flicker. There was considerable female choice. Only if a female responded to this display with a parallel Rocking action would she pair and would …

How Undergraduate Students' Perceptions Of Academic Librarians Can Inform Innovative Teaching, Jody C. Fagan, Hillary Ostermiller, Elizabeth Price, Lara Sapp
Elizabeth Price
Student perceptions of teachers can influence the success of instruction, and library instruction is no exception. Understanding the mindset of students can help academic librarians prepare for in-person and asynchronous classes and create instructional materials. By anticipating students’ impressions, librarians can challenge false assumptions and improve interactions. This poster highlights findings from a large study of how undergraduate students at one institution perceive academic librarians.
Understanding The Decline Of U.S. Manufacturing Employment, Susan N. Houseman
Understanding The Decline Of U.S. Manufacturing Employment, Susan N. Houseman
Susan N. Houseman
U.S. manufacturing experienced a precipitous and historically unprecedented decline in employment in the 2000s. Many economists and other analysts—pointing to decades of statistics showing that manufacturing real (inflation-adjusted) output growth has largely kept pace with private sector real output growth, that productivity growth has been much higher, and that the sector’s share of aggregate employment has been declining—argue that manufacturing’s job losses are largely the result of productivity growth (assumed to reflect automation) and are part of a long-term trend. Since the 1980s, however, the apparently robust growth in manufacturing real output and productivity have been driven by a relatively …

Aiming For Assessment: Notes From The Start Of An Information Literacy Course Assessment, Peter Larsen, Amanda Izenstark, Joanna Burkhardt

To provide systematic assessment of a 3-credit, full-semester information literacy course at the University of Rhode Island, the library instruction faculty adapted the Bay Area Community College Information Competency Proficiency Exam to determine how well the students learned the material taught in the course and how well that material reflected the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education.

A recent survey by Nature found that more than 70% of researchers have tried and failed to reproduce another scientist’s experiments and more than half have failed to reproduce their own experiments! Learn more about the “reproducibility crisis” in research and how librarians are helping by teaching researchers about reproducible workflows, proper management of code and data, …

The Most Overlooked Spiritual Discipline - Part 1, Daniel Reynaud, Paul Bogacs
The Most Overlooked Spiritual Discipline - Part 1, Daniel Reynaud, Paul Bogacs
Paul Bogacs
Listening, while frequently mentioned in the Bible, is virtually never listed as a spiritual discipline. However, the Bible has much to say about practicing it, enumerating the many benefits to be had by listening and hearing. It is a distinguishing skill of both God and Jesus. As humans, listening is a skill to be practiced toward God, toward each other and toward our own self. This article explores the biblical foundation of listening and some of its benefits and implications.

Listening is not just a recommended discipline in the Bible, it is a skill that can be learned and practiced. This article seeks to apply some of the skills and benefits of listening to the role of the pastor.

Support For The Precautionary Principle, Jennifer Mather
Support For The Precautionary Principle, Jennifer Mather
Jennifer Mather, PhD
The precautionary principle gives the animal the benefit of the doubt when its sentient status is not known. This is necessary for advanced invertebrates such as cephalopods because research and evidence concerning the criteria for sentience are scattered and often insufficient to give us the background for the decision.

Cephalopods Are Best Candidates For Invertebrate Consciousness, Jennifer A. Mather, Claudio Carere

Insects might have been the first invertebrates to evolve sentience, but cephalopods were the first invertebrates to gain scientific recognition for it.
An Invertebrate Perspective On Pain, Jennifer A. Mather
An Invertebrate Perspective On Pain, Jennifer A. Mather
Jennifer Mather, PhD
Although Key (2016) argues that mammals feel pain and fish do not, from an invertebrate perspective, it is obvious that the pain experience is shared by animals from a number of different animal groups.

Enhancing Recreation, Parks, Tourism Courses: Using Movies As Teaching Tools, Marni Goldenberg, Jason W. Lee, Teresa O'Bannon
Jason W. Lee
The use of movies provides educators with a valuable tool for presenting information as learners are able to benefit from the powerful images being presented before them. The purpose of this study was to identify the value of the use of movies as a teaching tool. This was an exploratory study aimed at identifying characteristics of movie use as an educational device in recreation, parks, and tourism classes. In this study, respondents (n = 67) indicated that the use of movies in the classroom was supported, and the findings of this study suggest that most instructors provided advance preparation activities …
